thanks so much for you comments and congratulations on your roll. The videos were made to be an overview of the roll. So I just distilled it down to the absolute essentials. Lots have said they learned from this video.
Great videos!!! Very informative and accurate. I started trying to roll using the sweep to back deck roll. Without any other help besides your videos, my very early attempts were successful. I can now perform a c to c, the sweep roll, and tonight at roll sessions tried my first back deck rodeo roll in my Mega Rocker. I followed your example and hit the roll the first time. Talk about stoked!!!!!!! Keep up the excellent work. I think you are a fabulous instructor.
having fun learning to playboat. when i fall in akwardly and i try to set up, more times then not coming from the backdeck, the kayak rights itself. this happens almost everytime. would assume this is a rodeo roll, but not going under bow. just the movement of bringing my paddle to the side and my head to the cockpit rim is righting me.
You are an engineer......another great question. Of course the lower body is tied to the upper body through the core (or abs and obliques as I like to think of it) There is gong to be a reaction to the torso going from a tucked position to an opening up or standing up in your boat. Not only is it your torso going back but legs are going away from you. Does that make sense. IF you were in space could you lean back without your legs moving also........no way every action would have a reaction.
Apologies for the slow reply (2 months..) I forgot that I had posted 'till I came back to youtube today :).
I decided to have another blast at the rodeo roll after some time simply forgetting it, having learned the sweep+C to C rolls.
Good to know that remembering your teaching points I was very almost there - I reached the last point in the roll where I need to bring my body back out of the water, however I ended up sculling my way back up... I'll have it by next friday's session :)
Remember that last step there is always a way to reduce the energy needed in getting up not just creating more force with the paddle such as sculling. REDUCE THe force needed to the maximum by using full body technique.
Great question......I have taught people in your shoes. I think the sweep to lay back is the roll to do. You are going from leaning forward in a tuck position to standing up......or laying on the back deck of your kayak. I think that requires the list twisting and the easiest body movement.
all of these moves imply that you are rolling yourself over. normally when i go under, it is not intentionally, and it happens before i can react. what are techniques to get back on top if you were flipped by accident.
Very good question! When you flip eventually one can initiate the roll from a variety of positions. When you are learning the roll get to the set up position and follow the sequence of positions that will upright you. Remember it takes a little core abdominal strength to get to the set up position. Remember like most movements in sports there is a wind up and follow through or a starting position finishing position. Get to the starting position and do not cut it short.
Well normally when leanring a roll it is easiest to set up above water then move it downwards after. With this roll there isn't really much of a setup, its one that you have to perfect and train alot so that when you do start to go over you're used to it and know how to react with full effectuveness ecven though it was un-intentional!
i might be able to find a video with a perfect example of an accidental flip with this rll used for recovery. If your still interested since it has been 2 months now?
Yeah, That is common. Think this as soon as your torso hits the water arched and starts to sweep .......snap the kayak over the top of your torso before your head and torso start to think. Do it quick and let me know how it works.
I tried this roll at a lake session last night and struggled to get anywhere. When my head reached the back of my kayak, instead of being able to continue sweeping I sank. What was I doing wrong?
Hahh that is a problem for inststructors. We actually teach our guides how to stay out of the way and not get hurt,,,,and how to handle the student on a failed roll attempt. The teacher is going to have to stay out of the paddles way. I have a method of being ahead of the paddle which is actually behind the paddler. But there are many ways of doing it. Are you talking about from a sea kayak or play boat?
Hey thanks a million for the speedy reply. I don't have a play boat, so I'll have to learn with a carbon fiber sea kayak that comes with a rudder (tasman breeze). Do a lot of solo sea trips, so hope to avoid wet exit by acquiring bomb proof rolls.
Can you post a clip on the key points and identities of a hand roll please. Its the next roll im dying to learn but my instructors dont tend to teach it to us because if your in a river its aleways best to keep hold of your paddle ey lol.
too bad you have a ball in youtr hands then so you gotta let it go.....
or roll with the ball in your hands took me a while to learn bu i ca finaly do it(not done in a match yet so i dont know if i can do it if im actually pushed)
I have used this users videos to learn how to roll C to C and twist and slice. This roll is still a hit or miss. I would really like to see a remake that shows more above water.
This is the only one of your videos that isnt perfectly explained. I really like the look of this roll but the bloke in the boat starts his movement long before the kayak is fully inverted? is this needed or is he just over keen?. Also clearly showing the movement above the water like all the other video clips would be very useful. Please re-make this video. All of the others are brilliant and very useful and understandable, even to a novice like me.
Generally, yes, you start a back deck roll before you're inverted. The reason playboaters use it so often is that it's FAST when you know you're going over and you go with it...and, as Chris said, there's low drag so you can stay in the hole without getting flushed. It's a cool feeling to come up in a surf! You can actually do this roll without getting your head wet with some practice.
the reason it seems as if he is starting the movement before he's inverted is because he is actually just setting up at that stage, i dont know why he leans forward at the start because the BDR is done when you are lying back on the deck, hence the name. once you are on the backdeck upsidedown, open the blade as he said there and twist around to a prone position. if you're using your right blade for support twist to the left, as you see there the blade actually skims the surface and doesnt sink
yeah, ive tried it, but it is definatley much harder in a sea kayak. you really have to know your stuff to do it 100% of the time. i did it only about 50% of the time...whereas i had to bail to the regular c to c roll.
YEs it can but when you are using a back deck roll the cock pit shape behind where you are sitting determines how much you can lay back on the deck. If it is huge and puffy it might slightly limit how far you can lay back. It is a commonly used roll in sea kayak and white-water. Like all the rolls there are certain strengths and limitations. I have a very long torso so I can almost always lay back I notice a problem with short torso people sometimes have troubles.
Because teaching in that manner makes it easier for beginners to learn the technique. Beginners start with a set up, and progress to a level where the set up is not required. And yes, I am an instructor. :)
No, thank *YOU*! I learned a great deal from your earlier stuff you did before You Tube. Teaching such as yours helped me get my ACA WW Instructors. Mind you, I never have met you in person, but your work shines through!

Nothing to do with paddle to weight ratio. if you body goes throught the motions this roll will work.

hi
i have been trying to learn this roll for some time an cant get it
does it have much to do with paddler to weight ratio

In a sea kayak I find this one hard on the shoulders.
I have seen White water paddlers dong this and keeping their hair out of the water.
This is beautifully instructed.
AlexMcGruer 3 years ago
Yes i can be hard on the shoulders if done improperly. Very important to keep the technique.
