It depends on the RPM you shift the gears on. If it's low RPM's, it's less gas. However, it'll take you a while to get from 0 - 40mph that way. I'm asking this, because my x3 is starting to lag when I shift from 1st gear to 2nd. It lags and then a boost of power just kicks in and throws me slightly forward. Also, it smells like a burnt clutch when I'm done driving. I cannot remember the last time I drove automatic. Step is more fun.

Yeah I'm wondering about that too.
I have a 2006 Bmw 325i and I use to Steptronic occasionally.. but is it like the manual where it saves a bit more gas or does it actually run more?

More power = More Gas no matter what..
You can use steptronic all the time, Just dont downshift when you are accelerating, because it puts alot of strain on the tranny
