Not really a waterspout, even though it was over water at some point. This is a tornado - true waterspouts form from mostly static, non-supercell storms. They're more slender, nearly motionless and don't have a wall cloud like in the above example. They're usually rate a zero on the Fujita scale too.

That's a tornado. Note the rotating wall cloud. Waterspouts never have a mesocyclone. And also note the inertia in it's sections as it "ropes out". Truly a unique video.
@faffaflunkie Tornadic waterspouts do have a mesocyclone and a wall cloud. Supercells have and do form over bodies of water, even the ocean. There have been wedge waterspouts with multiple vorticies seen over the ocean. There is even an artists rendition of one that was drawn back in the 1800's. The captain or one of his men on the ship later drew the picture to show others what they had seen. The only way back then since cameras didn't exist. But most waterspouts are non-tornadic(type 2).
@Torn80cj These people thought they we filming a harmless waterspout. They didn't know how close they came to getting killed by a more powerful tornado.
You probably should have worded that, "I was visiting Michigan when this amazing waterspout/tornado thing happened. We were all outside watching... It finally hit land and tore our roof off."
Sorry, I am a real stickler for wording things. I am a WRITER.
Thats actually a tornado. See the wall cloud it is coming out of? It is over water so technically it is a water spout. But if that went over land it would still maintain its structure.
F0 to F1 tornado at max. It was still travelling inland at the end of the vid. This is Black Lake, Michigan, yes? Loks like the lake. I'm in Detroit. We get plenty of tornados and water spouts here. In 1997 Detroit and 4 suburbs were hir pretty bad by a F1 to F3 tornado.
@dragonridley Agreed, it does look like a supercell as the whole thing is rotating. True waterspouts don't need a persistent rotating updraught, this clearly looked like it had that.
If that was true, the island i live on would now be destroyed! We get waterspouts loads here on the Isle of Wight in the UK, and yes we have had tornado damage before, and it has also had at least 10 waterspouts come ashore in the last couple of years but only 2 of these caused any damage!
we have a cabin on black lake and were there when this happened!! We had so many big trees come down next to the cabin, I guess our side got the worse of it

It looks like it might have been spawned by a supercell In which case it may have been multivortex

that is a massive waterspout and technacally after a water spout hits land and does not fissel out it is a tornado so it briefly became a tornado
darkangelangela 3 years ago
Once a water spout hits land , it quickly diminishes and recedes . It can't do much damage to anything on land . There are just high winds .
