@thealbertalad sorry i slightly confused by the layout of youtube :P but i do know about horses ! i ride everyweeked and volunteer at my stables . i am only a teenager and try my best to care for the horses ! i love them so much and hate racing , i was just voicing my opinion on racing !sorry if i caused offence i really didnt mean to but i think its judgemental to say i know nothing about horses when you dont know me . and i do know about horses its quite offensive to say otherwise.

i think when in a arena , riding in a lesson or a free ride whips are just wrong , it hurts the horse however when the horse is galloping and pumped full of adrenalin i doubt its going to FEEL the whip it will probably just hear the cracking next to its ear and willl surge forwards . regardless i am against racing , no matter how fun it looks like for the rider for the horse its nearing toture . most are never fit for use in riding schools or even a teenage horse .

I don't understand how that could be any training for the muscles since she is sitting down on the saddle until the very end, unless using the whip is considered the muscular training..

I agree completely with those of you who say that the whip is overused, however a carbon fibre whip that is specially designed to absorb most of the impact of the whip is okay for use if it is only used a few times in the last quarter mile, etc. but if you put a group of thoroughbred racehorses together and let them run the track without any whips, then you will get the most accurate picture of the fastest horse out there.

Some jockeys are trained to use the whip to scare the horse into running faster, others are taught to use it as encouragement. Most horses are trained to go faster with the whip, but it does distract some and as flat racehorses begin their careers very early they may develop a fear of the whip over time, and in a minority of cases the racehorse can become unrideable when a whip is persent.

it does not hurt them-do you think a stick could hurt them-if it really hurt them theyd flinch away from it-any horse would which none of the horses that i ride dont care about crops-its not a whip, really. I know they can be harmful if used the wrong way but these horses r treated better than the president XD i seriously want one of those mechanical horses though-on wheels, oh yeah!

I don't think it's the sound, it's more the movements of the jockey's hand and, they do often tickle them a bit with the whip.

(sorry if that sounds mean :)) horses move away from pressure thats why they go fast when you tap them with your legs. the whip gives them pain and the craking sounds also scares them, and they want to move away from it so they go faster . i hate whips. i have never used them on my horse and i am totaly against using them.

@CPSnowbo Its more the element of surprise. Thats why when i ride i keep my whip real close to their neck so the cant see it and when i change my Holt i hit them right away. But this video is more for conditioning because its really hard to be in that position for a long period of time and plus have to worry about whipping, staying still, and staying in motion with the horse it defiantly not as easy as it looks

@CPSnowbo You a wrong, So I shall correct you. They cant hear the whip because of the sound of the hooves and the crowd and the announcer. Whips are not meant to be loud anyway. They are used for encouragement, if not something to the horse saying go faster. The feeling is a sensation so they try to get away from it- Meaning speed

I don't know why they use whips any more (it is such an old fasioned way) Monty Roberts has discovered that horses actually run faster when they aren't whipped because the whips actually takes their attention away from the race. Also horses race naturally, so without whips there would still be a winner and a looser. (much like the dog racing)

I agree that sometimes they are whipped too much, but they do it to keep up the speed, like you or I would keep our leg on to keep up a canter, as their legs are in the wrong position to kick on.
