  • These test just reinforce how much you DONT want to be shot. Violent Criminals beware.

  • Great video, it seems that I live right between you and Hickok.

I never noticed this before, but the .45ACP Gold Dot has 7 petals? IIRC, they normally have just 6?

  • very good review and test. Nice information in a timely manner.

  • I'm very curious what the wound would look like in a SIM-TEST, or rather the difference with Winchester ranger t series .45... The expansion exposes talons. In fact it's the up-to-date version of the black talons, with longer teeth, and wider diameter.

  • Hope you will test the 200 gr +P Gold Dot!

  • Thanks for all the videos, great reviews! Any chance you'll review the .45 ACP Grizzly Xtreme -175gr? A couple other reviews are out there but nothing close to the actual information you provide. Thanks again

  • @Peidmonte89 I'm just wondering how many gun fights have u been in with the 9mm? Because I have experience with that shit cartridge, I hit a scumbag 3 times about 4 inches to the left of his heart and the asshole ran a half-mile before collapsing, last I heard he was alive and well sitting in a Iraqi prison. Yes it was ball ammo, but when u got 3 bullets hitting a less than 2 inch group I'm sure its the same or more than one hollow point, I will never own anything less then a 40

  • @Zaarour8 Wow... really... you hit him in the armpit? That's about 4 inches from my heart.

  • @Zaarour8 So you are saying the scumbag ran correct? That is by definition a "stop" and good enough for self defense in the US. No handgun caliber is going to be a one shot stop guarantee. Even some rifle hits to the torso don't do a one shot stop. Most rifle hits will but there's no such thing as a magic bullet. On another note, you were able to put 3 rounds in a 2 inch group with the 9mm quickly on a moving target I assume. This is less likely with the higher muzzle flip in the 40.

  • @mikesmith007x sorry man i should explain a little more, it was in Iraq where u need to actually get them to stop as in die. Him running to fight another day isn't good enough

  • @Zaarour8 Ok, fair enough. 45 good enough for wars, 9mm good enough for civilian self defense....actually I would say .380 with modern JHP performance is good enough. Shot placement.

  • @Zaarour8 its been proven that the 9mm is truly only very effective in HP loads. And I use HP +P loads. I'll say this to, its a home defense handgun and if the fool breaking in doesnt go down with the first round I will continue to fire until he is dead even if that means plugging him up with 16 rounds or reloading and putting 32 round, and oh wait thats right I have 3 mags loaded next to my bed so.....and then I have my whoop ass machine aka Mossberg pump shot gun loaded with #2 buckshot...

  • I have owned a 9mm Glock, own a .45 full size 1911, and I wouldn't want to be shot by either. I'm sorry I sold the Glock, too.

Living in California, ammo capacity is irrelevant. I don't feel that 8 vs 10 rounds is a big deal. Practice enough that your first round will hit exactly where you want anyway.

  • The military use 9mm over .45 largely for cost. A 9mm is much cheaper to produce than a .45. And btw, the military used the .45 as a sidearm for like 80 years. I carry a kimber ultra carry in 45 everyday everywhere I go. The weight is not an issue whatsoever

  • @jaymolo40 Ok but 9mm is a very good round. I am not saying .45 is bad I am saying 9mm gets the job done. I would love for someone to say 9mm is a weak cartridge and to stand in front of my gun just one time and take a bullet to let me know on a scale of 1-10 how much it hurt.

  • @Peidmonte89 9mm is good enough. As someone once said in the never-ending caliber wars: a handgun is a handgun and a rifle is a rifle.

  • @mikesmith007x yep and I do not feel under-gunned with 16 rounds of 9mm +p 124 grain hollow points....if that fails I also have a pump shotgun which I would deploy even be4 a handgun. I pity the fool who tries to rob my house.

  • As always, very well done. Thank you for taking the time. Looks like I've found my home defense ammo.

  • I don't think the "massive" damage done is really predominantly due to cutting by the bullet's petals. To my eye the deep "cut" is actually a split, and the patterns left in the walls of the split reveal that it pulled apart, rather than being cut, in the area of maximum temporary displacement. This effect would not occur in muscle tissue, where handgun bullets typically leave less-than-caliber (after expansion) sized holes.

  • how much might this media cost me, i love testin ballistic performance, but wet phonebooks are gettin old and a bit inefficient.

  • Great Vid. Do you plan on testing the .45 ACP - Grizzly Xtreme - 175 Gr. +P JHP Ammo in the Sim test?

  • Thank you for investing your time, money, and energy in bringing us this excellent review.

  • I WISH THAT WAS MY BRAIN !

  • why dont you carry the 45? i saw from your jingle bells video your a damn good shot with one.

the only rounds i carry are 10mm, 45acp and 357. Sig

  • @HunterKiller308 .45's are wide guns man. Not everyone wants to lug one around all day. Most stick with the .380, 9mm, and .38's for a reason. Its cost effective and size efficient and they will get the job done if you do your part too.

  • @Peidmonte89 what are you talking about? wide? 1911s are very slim and other 45acp handguns are damn near the same size as their 9mm counterparts, take glock for example

if by "you do your part to' you mean dump your whole mag in someones chest or pul off a head shot i agree but i dont have that kind of time in a gun fight

  • @HunterKiller308 I'm talking reality here for a sec/ For me a Glock 26 is WAY too thick for me to carry. Some of us go around it tight uniforms for work ya know. A .380 is the biggest I can carry. A 1911 is heavy. Do you carry a .45 every day all the time where ever you go? If not than you failed to remain armed. My .380 is ALWAYS on me. A 9mm, .380, and .38 CAN effectively put down somebody, look at the track record. Even the US military uses 9mm over .45.

  • @Peidmonte89 there are some very compact and slim single stack 45s on the market

just because you need to carry a small gun does not mean you need to carry a small round

a 1911 is heavy? lol......try an alloy frame then girly man =)

  • @HunterKiller308 Again you are NOT LIVING IN REALITY. You dont have to wear the uniforms I have to ta work. And I dont think you should carry if you cant put shots where they count. To your earlier comment, if you dont have time in a gun fight then why have a gun with a safety that might take up time. Try a gun without a safety next time or better yet a J-Frame. The funny part is that these "lesser" calibers have a tried and true track record. Are you engaging meth heads daily or something?

  • Thankyou for the reviews on all the .45 calibers very helpful.

  • I am aware that most viewers are concerned about self defense 45,9mm.380,40 JHP VS FMJ etc in a real life gun battle. Here some food for thought. I have the 1986 FBI gun battle book, with bullets and dead bodies. Bad Guy Platt, shot seven FBI agents with 223 Rifle bullets. 5 survived rifle wounds the 2 he murdered were shot within 5 or 10 feet point blank. He was shot 12 times 38,9mm,and 12 gauge. So what would your self defense 45 JHP ammo guarantee? One Shot stops? head shots,I think not,

  • very good

  • so you carry weapon is in 9mm correct? So far i've noticed out of the 380, 9, 40, and 45. Shows the 8mm being the least penetrable. So why are you carrying that particular rd? Thx alot, great vids!

  • Can you test the Gold Dot 230gr short barrel loads out of your 1911? I want to know if you get more volocity with the short barrel loads with a 5" barrel. I've been looking for GD 230+P but I don't think they make it.

  • Not to start a major debate,or alienate 1911 or 45 owners, However the lowly 9mm actually penetrates better than this round. And even all across the board 9mm

appears to penetrate better. And penetration is king. also 45 not only are heavier to carry each bullet is heavier. So we have less rounds than a 9 more cost than a 9, more weight than a 9 so what do you have with a 45 a back ache. Even the Military is a Beretta 9mm. Every one has a choice if you love 45 more power to you.but 9 is fine

  • @surfside006

Penetration is good, to a point. 9mm, especially FMJ, has a tendency to over-penetrate, sometimes even leaving an attacker's body in the process. That is wasted energy.

.45 penetration, in most instances, is more than adequate. Couple that with the fact that the bullet is nearly twice the diameter and weight of the average 9mm bullet (just talking FMJ here), and the .45 beats the 9mm.

But shot placement is always king.

  • @Immortal91Technique If you feel that size alone is a deciding point? Lets look at facts not only does a 45 weigh more, its bullets weigh more, and you carry less of them to boot. Factually no reasonable thinking person wants to be shot, with 22, let alone a 380,or 9mm.I guarantee the exact shot placement with either will have the same result, injured or dead? Common sense, a 9mm hole,or 45 hole, what difference to the dead,or injured bad guy? Placement, Penetration is primary,380 FMJ will do fine

  • @surfside006

A heavier bullet will produce more kinetic energy on impact, so heavier is better in that regard. And capacity is a non-issue as well, as most gunfights are over in about 2 shots.

You're right, no sane person wants to be shot with anything, which is why pulling a weapon on somebody is often the only deterrent needed to stop a crime. Unfortunately, some people are not sane, and will call your bluff when confronted with a gun.

.380 FMJ is better than nothing, but not a good choic

  • @Immortal91Technique Here is the sad actual facts about shoot outs that have actually happened, and not charts and conjecture? It seems in a Pennsylvania police shooting the bad guy was shot 17 times, six times with 40 caliber Gold Dots, and 11 times with 223 rifle, he died 31/2 days later, and fought when being handcuffed. In 1986 the FBI shoot a bad guy 12 times with 9mm,38,and buck shot, and he the bad guy shot 7 agents, and killed 2. So only a cannon is a sure thing. Hit men put 22 in a head.

  • i just made this my home defense and carry ammo, in my 9mm i chose the ranger t 127gr +p+....

  • Great video and good way of showing how these hollow points work. U have multiple videos that r very informative just subscribed!!:)

  • Im feeding these through a Para P14 and these bullets wont extract at all. Is something wrong?

  • .707 diameter! dam thats like a 12ga slug

  • @MrROTTENJUGGALO It does not have the energy of a 12 gauge slug so it will not make a perm cavity even close to the size. Id rather carry 9mm 147 grain hsts which went deeper and expanded to 0.66. This .45 bullet is only 0.04 inches bigger. Not a big enough of a difference to make up for less ammo.

  • @Radion561 Never said it did have the same power but hydrostatic shock wasn’t part of my comment i was purely speaking on the diameter. What you choose to carry is your choice.

  • Can I use this amno with my old colt gov. from 1940?

Another question: Colts from 1940 can use amno +P or it's dangerous?

  • And this is why this is my EDC carry round. Awesome video.

  • Nice vid! I would like to see a test done on the Grizzly Xtreme .45ACP +P

  • @pbstarkiller Dont bother with grizzly xtreme. They only get about 7 inches of penetration. This is not nearly enough to reach vitals. There petals are also known to break off. For a box of 20 for $50 these things are overpriced and underpowerd. The company traded penetration for better expansion. The expansion may look good but penetration is a hell of alot more important.

  • Thanks for all your time you put in these vids. Just goes to show that with all these new bullet designs and powders the 9/40/45 are very close. So for all those who argue what is better, just pick what you like and what you can control and forget about the caliber. I would love to see the 9/40/45 debate end one of these days.

    thanks again.

  • This is something people should be doing instead of arguing about that 9mm/.45 topic. Nice video, Thank you.

  • I think I raped the Like Button, cuz I been eagerly awaiting this test =)

  • Awesome review, I now carry the gold dot 9mm in my glock and the 45 in my rockisland 1911. I can now be confident to shred the insides of any intruder breaking in my house or attacking me on the street

  • Once again confirming the outstanding performance of this round. Great test

  • @ieatgodmeat. The Federal hi shok (or hydra shok?) was the only hollowpt load I have ever seen that penetrates 12” in. 380 caliber. Look into that.

  • Excellent test! Am considering a Taurus pt145 with a short 3.5 inch barrel. Do you feel confident this load will expand in such a short barrel? Thanks! Always happy to see your new work.

  • great test. thanks

  • Now that's stopping power :)

  • Very nice results. This is my trusted choice for 45 auto in my fnp45. However speer gold dot in 380 isnt a bonded bullet. In fact, i havent decided on a reliable round for my 380 yet. Where I live, im not able to do ammo tests any suggestions for 380? Right now i have 380 hydra-shok, and corbon jhp.

  • Dam the gold dots expand almost perfectly. Very good to see.

  • TN great video! i see another great test of the gold dots

  • Very nasty round...I think I am switching from my 185 +p PowR'balls to these for carry.

  • man those rounds come out real pretty

  • I've been carrying these a long time, glad to see a repeat of the previously demonstrated great results.

Thanks for taking the time to do these vids, I appreciate it.

  • Keep up the great work, Love your ammo test videos. I have a Ruger LCR357 and use the Hornady Critical Defense 125gr FTX .357Mag for my self-defense load. I would like to see real ballistics with this combo. Any gun with 1-7/8" barrel would be fine. Hornady says that these bullets are optimized for short barrels, yet their data is from a 8" barrel.

  • top notch

  • I hate the cicadas here

  • You had a 9mm 147 gr HST expand to 0.75 and this 45 acp expanded to 0.70. Does this mean that those two rounds have about the same stopping power, even though one is 9mm and the other one 45 acp?

Hollow Point technology has really shorten the gap between calibers.

  • Yup; 45acp!

  • I was using Winchester Pdx but this one looks better thanks for the info :)

  • I appreciate the time it takes to put out a quality video such as this. Thanks, great data point.

  • I carry the same round in the 200gr +p

  • hi! Thank you for your videos. A question. Between the speer gd in .45 acp and the corbon dpx 185 gr +P which one you would reccomend for self defense? Thank you.

    Ono

  • hey outdoors can you do some .357sig in speer dot or whatever you have pleaseeee. i've been wanting to see some ballistic testing with that caliber. .357 vs .45 would be AWSOME also. but whatever you can do thanks.

  • As always, fascinating analysis. Reassuring too as my HD is the G21SF and CCW is the G36.

  • @123mrcanttouchthis

    Huh?????

  • @tnoutdoors9 gotta adore that big 45 auto im lucky enough to have saved enough cash to be buying a barely used gen4 glock 21 in several days when the man selling it gets back from south carolina ive heard the new recoil spring in the gen4's make a considerable improvement

  • @123mrcanttouchthis where did he say white ? i heard quite not white oh well maybe i missed it...

  • @123mrcanttouchthis cHus we are from the sHoutHa

  • Thanks for doing these videos. Very good info to have.

  • Nice work, as always. Keep up the nice vids.

  • Very nice out come for the gold dot. I am looking forward in seeing the rest of the bullets in the past go threw the sim test.

  • Many thanks for the replies. Also, Glock Talk has a thread on a carbine. Awaiting approval from the DOD. Is this true? Any idea if it is to be LEO only or can regular Joe's get to buy one?

  • can you show us how you are getting your numbers? i.e. how fast the bullet is traveling

  • @jreedmcu1 i'm sure he's using a chronograph.

  • @jreedmcu1

Just bought a new chronograph. There has been a suggestion to actually show those shots in the video, which I am considering, as long as it doesn't take too much time. Not very exciting viewing, but probably better than watching paint dry or hot tar bubble in the street.

  • @tnoutdoors9 Yes sir, time is a huge factor in video making. I upload game play videos; the time it takes is unbelievable. the best of luck

  • Another great video! If I can ever find a box of the Gold Dots here in East TN, I will pick up a box for my 1911.

  • Good video! Looking forward to a .44 mag test!!!

  • The Gold Dots dont dissapoint, one hell of a round. The wound channel is good and penetration was good, nice test!!

  • love to see hornady critical defense in 45acp thanks

  • Impressive, good video, and good close up views.

  • I always look forward to your new ammo tests, being a ammo junkie!

  • I have not watched all of your videos, but it might be cool to see a comparison video between a hallow point vs a regular rounded tip as far as the expansion and cavity are concerned. Just a thought. Great Vid. Keep it up!

  • I tested the 200gr Gold Dot in my Kimber and saw serious bullet setback into the brass after only a very few times chambering them. Did you notice anything like this with the 230gr? Thanks for making great videos.

  • Thanks tnoutdoors9! I have been waiting on this test in the new media. I either ccw a 9mm or .45 and in both I carry GoldDots. I think they are such a great round and GoldDots always function in my carry guns. Can't argue with the wound cavity of the good ol' .45ACP either :)

    Thanks again!

  • Another great test. Love those Gold Dot's.

  • still not better than the golden sabers.

  • Great vid my friend. Thanks for sharing.

  • How much more power would it have been if you have used +P?

  • Why do i have to live in Germany ? Why cant i be an american citizen damn it . Gun laws in my country are aweful . I would cut off my left arm for being an american citizen . I would even join the U.S miliatry and risk my life . Peace out . Nice Video . Keep em comin´

  • Gold Dot looks like a crowd pleas-er to me... : )

  • a shotgun slug's caliber is .72...and that .45 went to .70....holy crap

  • I wonder how much of the depth of the tissue damage is due to pressure? You know the pedals are not reaching that far I guess. At .7 expansion that means that about .35 is on either side of the slug. The depth of the cut seemed deeper on both sides than that. It would be like pulling a piece of fruit apart with both hands as you cut it. The knife isn't actually cutting the depth, the pressure is aiding in the tear. In any case the damage is done I guess :) Nice video!

  • Thank you again for your analytical approach to ballistics. I really appreciate the time and energy you put in to your videos. .....and when you go creative, your vids are off the hook. Thanks again from California.

  • Good review,That is a good round. Thanks for you time.

  • Thank you for doing these ballistic tests.

Your 38 Special tests were very eye opening! I like revolvers, but I'm not sure the 38 Sp. is such a great choice anymore. I once let my brother in law shoot my S&W 38 at a 1 inch thick oak board, and the bullets went through the board (close range) and plopped out the other side without any deformation.

Is there any chance of seeing a 357 magnum, hollow point test?

  • Beutiful expansion! Thats like a 70 cal hole!

  • I really enjoy these videos. Thanks a million and please keep them coming.

  • Beautiful, that's some seriously brutal stopping power.. would probably make me think twice!

  • Thats pretty nasty. Good thing i got some of this ammo!

  • Thanks for another great video; best ammo tests on youtube. Man, those cicadas areloud! Crazy! Thank goodness they only hatch every 13 years!

  • As always a great test those Gold Dots always seem to perform like they are supposed to, Thanks

  • I've always been a fan of the GDHP. I alternate between that and the PDX1. I also have some Vintage Black Talons as well. I guess I'm just fickle.

  • Thanks for taking the time to do these independent tests. It has been great watching the progression of the media development and testing procedures. Not to mention the fantastic shooting videos! You truly have a great channel!!!

  • Another great video for the munitions professor of you tube ! Could you imagine being shot by one of these?

  • you could probably soak the expanded bullet in hot water and melt away the trapped media to get an accurate retained weight

  • I have box of this stuff I have had I know a good ten years never used fund it when I was cleaning my ammo cans you sold me I know what I'll be shooting out of my 1911 Thanks bro

  • Another great test. Thanks again for taking the time to test out different ammo. Makes buying decisions easier :)

  • As always, great work! thanks!!

  • 45 yes. learning a lot from your video great job.

  • I love these ballistic tests that you do. Can you do the Gold dot in .40 cal 180 gr and also the Gold Dot in 9 mm 124 gr +P......thanks...

  • Great video! I love seeing ballistic tests! :)

  • Good stuff. What a great cartridge.

  • id like to see some bird shot(differnt sizes #9,#4 turkey load, ect) and some buckshot test ;)

  • Another great video. Is it safe to say that these rounds feed reliably in a 1911?

  • LOVE these HP Ammo tests TN. VERY well done and great video quality as well.

  • Not bad, not bad. Not too many tests I've seen where Gold Dot ever failed to expand nicely, although this one surprised me in that it only penetrated 12" - for this heavy of a load, I would've expected at least 14".

Eager to see how Hornady Critical Defense and PDX1 perform in .45 ACP when fired into this type of media - those are my two current load choices for my 1911A1 Government.

  • @darkwriter77

My BB calibration was on the low end, 3.25", which probably accounted for what some folks might consider minimal penetration in this load.

  • And please post weekly!!! Everyone likes and looks forward to your work. Keep us happy!!! Playing hard to get is for getting ladies! You had us at "ammo test"!!!

  • @machineguntongue

LOL, thanks! I'm trying, but gotta take care of business first, and that is getting more complicated and involved.

  • good test, nice result ont he .45acp

  • Please .380 Gold Dot and also CorBon DPX. Bersatalk seems to speak highly of these choices. Btw- I know you like HST147, but if you ONLY HAD a .380 for Self Defense, would you use FMJ or HP? Some say .380 is too weak to fully utilize "mushroom action" and that your best bet is MAX Penetration via Round Nose. Please answer, even if brief or IDK.

  • @machineguntongue

I will definitely test some .380 FMJ's then give you my opinion on that topic. I also have more JHP's to test.

  • Man are those cicadas loud!!

  • @suncountryairline

This is just the beginning of the infestation......it will only get worse. Within a week or so, it may be necessary to wear earplugs INSIDE the house. This is epic, as had been predicted.

  • @tnoutdoors9 Can you give us some more videos of the cicadas?

    That is just crazy!

  • @tnoutdoors9 then it'll be like walking around on captain crunch for a week

  • @tnoutdoors9 Can you post another video of the Cicadas? I used to live up in Baltimore Maryland, and now I live down in Texas, people think I'm exaggerating when I talk about the noise, and the sheer quantity of those suckers, it'd be nice to show them a video.

  • I've been hoping for this caliber test!! Thanks TnOutdoors9!! =)

  • 124 +p 9mm GD: 13 inches, .65 expansion

    230 grain .45 GD: 12 inches, .70 expansion

    180 grain .40 GD: 16 inches, .60 expansion

Hmm. Is it fair to say, that after al this testing, you haven't seen anything to get you to switch from 9 to .40 or .45?

  • @ARS1290

I'm not opposed to carrying my 1911, which I can do best in colder weather, or the Glock 23 that I plan to buy later this year. As far as switching 100%? It can't be ruled out, but at this point in time I'm just too fast and accurate with the G19 compared to everything else. It comes down to that. All those numbers you cited could stop a threat, then again, they may not.

  • @tnoutdoors9 those numbers ARS1290 points to basically indicate that ballistically there's just not a lot of difference, and the choice comes down to personal preference and/or what feels best to them when shooting. There might be some other factors affecting choice (like magazine capacity, or performance after penetrating a barrier, say),but it looks like in a situation where you draw and shoot the bad guy one time, it doesn't matter much if you're using .40, .45, or 9mm, all else being equal.

  • Nice Test. Thumbs up. Looks like good performance.

  • MAGNIFICENT! long i have waited for this day when you decided to retest my personal carry load into the sim test media as opposed to the wet-pak (though my carry gun has a 3.9 inch barrel.) thanks tnoutdoors9! both results in the tests leave me mighty pleased. keep up the good work and thanks again for the awesome videos!

  • That's a pretty good round right there

  • Love your videos, was wondering if you could do a sim-test with federal 410 shotshell personal defence ammo 4pellet 000 buck. This is a popular ammo choice for many prople who are buying the Taurus Judge for home and personal protection. Thank You.

  • I'm sold on the Speer bullets. Thanks for doing the tests.

  • would you rather use these or pdx1's ????

  • @EliteAmericans

    Probably the Gold Dot.

  • Sweet new test. Thanks for all that you do. I love most of the SGD rounds.
