I have seen this movie god knows how many times and seeing look lose his arms still sends shivers through me. That little moment that takes less than a second is more emotionally sustaining than the entire prequel trilogy.
0:40 I like how after Vader says "You have learned much young one", Luke immediately proceeds to the least strategically sound one-handed battle crouch ever and loses his lightsaber
This scen is thousands of times better than any fight scene in the prequels. It didn' t take a thousand animators, it took two guys, and it wasn't flashy and pretty, it was raw, mortal conflict.
@Preator That is what is missing in the prequels. As much as I like SW flashy effects and film magic are no substitute for superior acting and storytelling. That is a lesson that unfortunately it appears Mr. Lucas forgot.
@Maloperverso Lol, maybe Luke just inherited his mom's height. Not to mention vader has fake legs so they are probably make him a lot taller than he was originally. Still, I think it's hilarious.
@237cupcake Makes you wonder what he would be like without the suit and raving mad with the dark side (thinks back to ROTS) - he could probably overcome Luke a lot quicker. Also, I think, if he hadn't that outfit on, he would have taken the emperor out LONG ago. That's probably why he asked Luke to join him to defeat the emperor- he couldn't do it himself. Not to mention Palpatine's Sith lightning could easily hurt or kill him
@xXxTheNitropowerxXx he needs a sabre of more intensity, did u realize the thinkness of the lightsabre used to cut his arm in the return of the jedi? check it, its huge plus vader has armour
the interesting thing about this whole fight is that Darth Vader isnt necessarily trying to KILL Luke... he could have easily done that. But Vader would have if driven to that point.
fucked up thing is he's only 1 handing the saber tell he is like ok you fucker ..>.< ill show you what a SITH LORD EATS FOR MOTHER FUCKEN BREAKFAST LOL
i believe that this fight, the darth maul fight, and the final fight of Return of the Jedi are the best. None of the others really compare: not even anakin vs. obi wan in Revenge of the Sith.
The fight gets serious at 3:21. Darth is like I'm through playing with you kid. I'm a Jedi Master and your a Padawan. Seriously look at the fight scenes from Empire of Luke and Darth leading up to this fight. This part in the movie is the best lightsabre duel, in my opinion.
Vader is a Sith lord. he was never granted the title of Jedi master he was only a knight but its slick the way you mostly uses one hand to fight luke Lol.
@3:20 that wasnt luke s reflexes ...that was the force controling luke's actions .Vader pops out with his saber .and lukes lightsaber is on in a blink of an eye and he's quickly ready for combat
Fighting his father with his fathers old saber. In which that saber was used to killed Count Dooku,Padawans,Jedi's,the Viceroy, and used it to battle obiwan on Mustafar. That Saber is way before lukes time. Thing is more valuable that luke can imagine.
3:55 - dodge doge counter - REALLY NICE!!! That part was some pretty realistic choreography, not like that exaggerated Kung Fu shit you see in most movies nowadays. Of course, there's a lot of exaggerated parts in the rest of this fight, but that one part was verrrry impressive!
It could be interpreted as a failed attempt at a parry/counter. If you spar a lot in any striking style, whether kickboxing or sword fighting, sometimes you try to anticipate what will happen. It could be said that Vader expected Luke to do something which could've been countered or parried, yet was completely wrong and thus threw a useless move.
Remember, this is a movie.. you don't have to take it seriously. This is coming from a Muay Thai practitioner.
I normally don't take movies seriously, but that's not the case for the original trilogy of Star Wars. Thanks for your informative explanation (no sarcasm there)!
Anyone who thinks attack of the clones is the best movie needs to get their head examined. Empire should normally be the pick for best in the series, or at least one of the three original films.
This has always been my favorite dual. The stylized look of the glow of the lightsaber's combined with the hot tangerine luminance of the Carbon Freezing Chamber as well as the ominous presence of Darth Vader make this an incredible sequence in one of the greatest Action/Fantasy films of all time. When this scene starts, the tension level of tension and suspense is breath-taking, and, for some reason, Vader seems so much more evil here than in any other scene. It's absolutely fantastic!
I made a mistake milord.. i grew too zealous and challenged you! but i have the protectorate and others behind me!!!!! I am destined to be a great LORD. I know you have 58 months in before me , challenge me again ..
I love the sense at the beginning that both Luke and Darth are holding back, Darth because he doesn't actually want to kill Luke and Luke because he has no idea what to expect from an actual duel.
@crazyhiho Well yeh obviously Luke had far less training at the same age. Vader was trained from 13 years old and was naturally more powerful. Luke only met Obi Wan when he was 19 and hadn't even picked up a Light Saber.
@ojideagu True, you are 100% right, Its just funny how luke had some training from both yoda and obi-wan and he tosses it out the window when he meets vader in action.
the whole scene is a masterpeice though in comparison to the dull acrobatic fights of the newer films.
@crazyhiho That's my exact beef with the Anakin Obi fight. Anakin should have lost some technique and been fighting wildly and brutally like Luke if he had truly gone to the dark side. The dark side is meant to be about anger and rage and brute force. He just fought like a mildly pissed off Jedi.
@Axxidous what about speed force ? impossible light saber moves ? now the weakest padwan is twice as strong as the emperor himself...when luke did a jump force vader was awed (impressive , mos impressive )... and lightning force was the supreme shit back then . There was a legitimate reason why yoda advised luke not to undestimate the emperor power . Now it appears both of those power are common (obiwan does a jump force twice as big in "phantom: , tyrannus use lighting in "attack").
Vader is supposed to be this badass Jedi yet he can't even capture a NOOB Jedi (if that), who has only ONE arm, NO lightsaber, and is hanging on for dear life...
Vader said "Perhaps you're not as strong as the Emperor thought..." Well hopefully Vader is referring to himself!
I see nothing wrong with the prequels TPM was a alright comeback it explained the back storys ect AOTC was better it showed the clone wars for the first time and it's the first prequel to include the imperial march it also showed some reasons how anakin was turning to the dark side ROTS showed how the original trilogy started we saw from our own eyes how anakin got in the suit ect AOTC will always be my most favorite star wars film though
@nedalnekbrad What? They just fought with lightsabers, moved things like psychics and in the movies they used the electricty thing too. Are these the powers that they didn't have in the originals that you're referring to? XD
Lightsabers felt more dangerous in the old trilogy, somehow more real. In the new ones the just wave them around whenever they get a chance, doesn't really have the same suspense as it used to have.
@DenDhur In the previous Star Wars, Lucas had written in the script that Lightsabers where heavy like Real Claymore swords and they were hard to use.
He decide later that they could be light so more fancy choregraphic fight could happen giving more actions. I like both style, the first one makes the lightsaber seem more fearsome, but the light version i nthe prequel makes combat looks cooler and have so really cool choregraphy (Darth maul fight or Kenobi VS Skywalker fight)
But I also feel that since this takes place decades after the Jedi purge (eps 3), the lightsaber fights should feel slow, intense and dangerous because this is a type of duel not seen for a long time .. and everything is at stake for both sides.
@DAngelProductions Ahh that is a very good point indeed^^ It always makes me smile when true fans join in with their thoughts and emotions to Star Wars
@Luiz98FLA10 Well that'll forever be an Individuall opinion. I find them both enjoyable but in different ways^^ I rewatched the fight in Ep3 alot of times cuz to be fair, despite all the CGI, it was one hell of an awesome fight! A nice duel and build up for the one to come. The Fight in Ep4 has a Nostalgic value, first time we see Lightsabers cross! Master Vs Apprentice, it has alot of emotions, and they are only stronger now after Ep3. I see 'em as one long duel through time´;) what about you?
@DenDhur it was because by then they were virtually ancient weapons that nobody used any more, hence the blade igniting slower than they do in ep 1, 2, 3
@DenDhur Absolutely! In the new series...everybody has one and we see them all the time. In the trilogy...as a kid...I would watch in suspense for the one or two scenes when the sabers came out. Cause when they came out...it was VERY serious.
@NeilLB7 Then we share the same emotion to this nostalgic memory and as you say when the sabers came out vs one another it sure had an amazing impact of mezmerizing Force´:)
Awesome fight, vader's reaction to getting hit is pitch perfect.
I remember being freaked out as a kid when I first saw Luke getting his hand chopped off, I was expecting Luke to somehow pull through and turn the fight around like he did in episode IV when he destroyed the Death Star. Didn't stop from going back and watching this fight again and again though
Much more realistic than dancing the booga-wooga with your enemy like in the prequels. What I mean, is that in the prequels they look like they're dancing while fighting... Might be some ancient old Jedi techniques and tricks, w/e you wanna call it. But if you spin around during a battle, your opponent could easily stab you in the back during the progress.
Phatooine, I really like how you took their swords and turned them into light sabers... and the sound effects were right on also. Oh yeah, that's right. Those really were light sabers. I've guess I've seen too many fan clips.
@superstarwarsrock The prequels were not really boring. Years ago, when I started watching the first episodes, including Phantom Menace, I was just blown away and it a enjoyable time for me :)
Vader is toying with him, but you also get the sense that he's getting pushed back a bit. He finally loses it when Luke hits his shoulder ... that was real pain and he lost his temper. That growl he gives is awesome.
you gotta hand it to luke there at the end...

But I also feel that since this takes place decades after the Jedi purge (eps 3), the lightsaber fights should feel slow, intense and dangerous because this is a type of duel not seen for a long time .. and everything is at stake for both sides.

@DAngelProductions plus the weaponns them selves are very old..like Luke's lightsaber from e 3
apollonas101 11 months ago
@apollonas101 I find it freaking epic that Vader is crossing blades with his old Jedi lightsaber.

Makes u wonder if Vader knew he was fighting against his old lightsaber Lol

@SecretAgentDouble000 By all means^^

@DenDhur But, which fight was better? Obi Wan vs Darth Vader ( Revenge of the sith ) or Obi Wan vs Darth Vader ( A new Hope) ?
Luiz98FLA10 11 months ago
@Luiz98FLA10 Well that'll forever be an Individuall opinion. I find them both enjoyable but in different ways^^ I rewatched the fight in Ep3 alot of times cuz to be fair, despite all the CGI, it was one hell of an awesome fight! A nice duel and build up for the one to come. The Fight in Ep4 has a Nostalgic value, first time we see Lightsabers cross! Master Vs Apprentice, it has alot of emotions, and they are only stronger now after Ep3. I see 'em as one long duel through time´;) what about you?
DenDhur 10 months ago
@DenDhur it was because by then they were virtually ancient weapons that nobody used any more, hence the blade igniting slower than they do in ep 1, 2, 3
apollonas101 10 months ago
@DenDhur Absolutely! In the new series...everybody has one and we see them all the time. In the trilogy...as a kid...I would watch in suspense for the one or two scenes when the sabers came out. Cause when they came out...it was VERY serious.
NeilLB7 10 months ago
@NeilLB7 Then we share the same emotion to this nostalgic memory and as you say when the sabers came out vs one another it sure had an amazing impact of mezmerizing Force´:)

@DenDhur the lightsaber scenes are awesome in heir to the empire i still have to read dark force rising and the last command

you are vader with your little boots and cape
and helmet to cover up that burnt ass face
akguitar94 1 year ago

Is this from the original 80's version?

This is the best fight in the saga, for sure.

Vader: I am your father.
Luke: No, that's not true, THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!!!
Vader: I have a tape showing Padme giving birth to you to prove it!
luke: OK YOUR MY FATHER.

Phatooine, I really like how you took their swords and turned them into light sabers... and the sound effects were right on also. Oh yeah, that's right. Those really were light sabers. I've guess I've seen too many fan clips.

I wish luke got frozen too!

@superstarwarsrock The prequels were not really boring. Years ago, when I started watching the first episodes, including Phantom Menace, I was just blown away and it a enjoyable time for me :)
piloneman 1 year ago 2
@piloneman Why does everyone talk about Phantom Menace so badly? Attack of the Clones was way worse, and in my opinion so was revenge of the sith.
GunDelight 1 year ago
@GunDelight Well thats not how i looked at it. The reason why I mentioned it was because i was blown away by it and had a good time seeing it.
piloneman 1 year ago
Vader is toying with him, but you also get the sense that he's getting pushed back a bit. He finally loses it when Luke hits his shoulder ... that was real pain and he lost his temper. That growl he gives is awesome.
