From what I heard is that Taiwanese, saw this aircraft and compare with F-16, and they were quite worry because they found out that this aircraft can be as good as F-16.
@ltmikepowell The JF-17/FC-1 is actually close to being a contemporary F-20 Tigershark.. It was built to fill pretty same niche that the F-20 was and its turned out to be rather good. A rare example of an indigenous plane program by a by a non-First world country (albeit made jointly with a major power) that actually succeeded quite well.
The avionics of the base model is significantly more advanced than the earlier F-16s that the Pakistani Air Force use and there are plans to upgrade further.
@Girder3 Well, the U.S. Air Force chose F-16 in the end, although F-20 can be as easily maintained as any Soviet-built aircraft (which emphasized reliability as well).
@Girder3 Both F-5 and F-20 got quite small wing area and overall fuselage size. Which means it's light and fast if properly designed and equipped. Of course, the FC-1 engine is definately more powerful than the unwanted F-20.
Even the U.S. Navy's Top Gun training school has warned their pilots that an F-5 flown by well-trained pilots can be a dangerous foe. Let's hope future FC-1 can make F-16 pilots sweat till dry.
Throughout the 10 mins demo, the plane didn't do a single full loop. It always seems to climb to the top of the loop then roll or dive but never pulls through the whole loop. At the top, the pilot just rolls it 2-3 times but never follows through the loop completely.

@ltmikepowell well i do, but JF-17 is way modern thatn F-16s, they are more controlled and easy to maneuverer.

@qazibasit Despite it's F-5-like design (the U.S. version of cheap tactical fighter for their third-world ally), this aircraft has demonstrate surprisingly great maneuvering capability. From what I heard is that Taiwanese, saw this aircraft and compare with F-16, and they were quite worry because they found out that this aircraft can be as good as F-16.

@ltmikepowell The JF-17/FC-1 is actually close to being a contemporary F-20 Tigershark.. It was built to fill pretty same niche that the F-20 was and its turned out to be rather good. A rare example of an indigenous plane program by a by a non-First world country (albeit made jointly with a major power) that actually succeeded quite well.
The avionics of the base model is significantly more advanced than the earlier F-16s that the Pakistani Air Force use and there are plans to upgrade further.

@Girder3 Well, the U.S. Air Force chose F-16 in the end, although F-20 can be as easily maintained as any Soviet-built aircraft (which emphasized reliability as well).

@Girder3 Both F-5 and F-20 got quite small wing area and overall fuselage size. Which means it's light and fast if properly designed and equipped. Of course, the FC-1 engine is definately more powerful than the unwanted F-20.
Even the U.S. Navy's Top Gun training school has warned their pilots that an F-5 flown by well-trained pilots can be a dangerous foe. Let's hope future FC-1 can make F-16 pilots sweat till dry.

Throughout the 10 mins demo, the plane didn't do a single full loop. It always seems to climb to the top of the loop then roll or dive but never pulls through the whole loop. At the top, the pilot just rolls it 2-3 times but never follows through the loop completely.

all I had ever seen was close-up pics of the JF-17. I had never noticed that at a distance the Thunder kind of resembles the F-20 Tigershark. Cool video, thanks for posting it.

@zoxo100 Well, they managed to shoot down Israeli fighters during the Arab-Israel War. Let's hope Pakistan Air Force regime can learn from Sattar Alvi, a pilot caught my attention other than Giora Ipstein during the Arab-Israel conflict.
