I have flown in DC 6`s but never had the chance to fly in a Connie. What a nice looking ship. That was when flying was a treat. I remember flying United on DC 6 `s they had a great breakfest, that included four Winstons. I guess we will never see that kind of service again.
My uncle worked as a steward on the airlines, then in restaurants his whole life. Most of that time, smoking was allowed everywhere... within a sealed passenger cabin... in restaurants... movie theaters... it was a constant occupational second hand smoke exposure for him. Otherwise, he was not a smoker. His last years of life were spent with an oxygen bottle always near at hand. Thank God some things change for the better.
@kngkrl22 Yeah you're right. It always seems better looking back, but troubles were the same then as now. It's just that when you are young things look a lot different.
Thanks for sharing this, Bomberguy. I love the classic airliners. Satisfying my love for them with the B377 Stratocruiser from A2A for FSX, although still trying to figure out how to fly it! I'm sure A2A will create a Lockheed Constellation at some point. Anyway, thanks again.
i dont know but, some company like continental, or wherever you want shut have 3 or 4 bird like these airliners to cross country. to experience how these peapole live those travels..
so you want to hold a gps in your hand and forget about pilotage? thats important for any pilot to know. Technology is great, but learn how to navigate like these guys.
The explanation of ADF and ILS is pretty funny. To think they teach us how to use ADF still is amusing. I'm gonna get a handheld gps unit in a few days...for 500 bucks...a way more advanced system for my personal use. nice.
Thank you for this incredible treat. When I watched, I felt that old pride in being an American a feeling and a spirit that seems a million years ago. A time when engineering to perfection was by slide rule, and being a passenger on an airliner was a special thing, and your mom and dressed you in your best dress. And you were treated with respect, and not like a common criminal or at best cattle. People today don't have a clue what they missed by being born too late.
@redravensounds Yes Cindy, I'm glad also that I lived in that era. Life seemed much simpler and calm. I suppose those who were 64 at that time also thought the same way about their early years too. No darn airplanes making so much noise and busy noisy highways. I am glad that I witnessed the steam age of travel also, although it was all but ended then
When I was six (1955) I rode in a Connie from Hawaii to San Diego. The plane was so huge and awe-inspiring! Ten years later my Air Scout group went through a decommissioned Connie in Seattle. I was astonished how cramped and claustrophobic the interior seemed! I was also struck by how many controls were hydraulic (activated by little spigots on the panel) rather than electric. Technology changed fast even back then.
this plane is kept at Albion Park airport near Wollongong.Sadly all the QANTAS Connies were scrapped..the one we have is a ex US Military Transport Service Plane and a type not flown commercially..it is allowed to use a bit of the QANTAS livery..its interior shows its miltary use but I think they have found a few ex QANTAS seats!!
What? No mag check??

One thing about flying in those days that was nasty was all that smoking.

Funny how everything was manualy operated, the margins for errors were too great for my taste. But hey, it was old days.

Were black people allowed on those planes back then?

@henerymag For some of us yes, but for some those weren't the good old days.

@henerymag Yeah, and give everyone around you a good dose of lung cancer. Smoking is a filthy, disgusting habit.

they are using VOR to VOR nav?
Pwnzistor 2 years ago
Looks like NDB nav there and the tone is the old A and N radio ranges. It's funny to see how old ILS is and is still in use today

Could a passenger actually wave to the pilot while walking across the tarmac? Just you try that today!

I've done it! But of course, it was while walking from MY plane to the office!

Those were the real pilots. Navigating manualy. Thats how my dad is teaching me how to fly. I already know how to use the modern way.
