Also if you are in a park that has fill dirt and you still get a high tone swinging your coil a foot off the ground, leave the" can" for the next guy.
Don't just hop out of your car eager and start digging. Find parks/cut throughs next to old houses. Swing a bit and if there is trash everywhere hit the edges and under bushes that other detectorists wouldn't bother. Also the woods are you're friend as long as they aren't too hoboified
I have a quick question. Whenever I metal detect, i always find cans, junk or pennies. I was wondering if you could tell me where good spots are to find gold, silver, rings and old coins. I have already hit a few parks. I live in Glenview illinois if that helps at all. Thanks
Hey i hope you could help me out with this question.. im going to buy my first metal detector but i dont know which one to choose between the fisher f2 or the garrette ace 250 or any other brand that is other 300 dollars. I want one that picks up real good signal and one thats good with finding silver and gold. I dont really know much about metal detecting so can you please help me out here if you can
@TonyGreens99 Sorry it's taken so long for me to get back to you... wasn't able to sign in.
Anyway, I think you would do well with either one. However, you should check on some of the MD forums and ask people who use them. Try Findmall.com. They have forums for the Fisher "F" series and Garrett models
Wow nice job. Looks like a newly developed park in a nice area. I have hunted for a long time I still have yet to find silver. Heres one for you. I hunted this old park by me. Its been a park for over 100 years, Hunting under a huge oak tree in 6+ inches of soil I find a 1991 Quarter (real odd sucluded area). Now hows this happen?? I'm amazed people find silver in 1 to 2 inches of soil. nice job!
@Chrdrummer Well, I've found clad coins way deep and silver coins fairly shallow... The ground turns over after the winter frosts so what wasn't there last year, might be there this year :) You also have to think about areas that might be landfill. If the soil came from someplace old, then you stand a chance at shallow silver. In a nutshell, ya just never know. HH!
It's illegal to detect on private property (without permission) and Federal land; don't know about individual State laws... I'm sure they vary from state to state
In my area, most ballfields / parks are OK to hunt. For State Parks (even the beach), you need a metal detecting permit (which costs $40 if you can believe it).
Hello, I probably wont get a reply to this comment, but i'll try anyways. I'm using a Bounty Hunter Sharp Shooter 2 and am having real trouble finding a nice coin. I live in Canada, and all i have been able find is a fuckload of trash, some 1980's pennies, and a 1963 nickel. Does anyone have any tips that could help me find the good stuff?
Could you please recommend a good detector? I'm a total rookie! I would love this. But, we will have snow and hard ground soon. Do you do this year round?
There's not much you can do in the winter... however, you can go where people sled down hills. I'm fortunate because I live near the beach. I do that year round.
Look into any name brand: Minelab, Whites, Fisher, Garrett. They are not cheap though. Garrett makes a great beginner model; the Ace 250. Check the metal detecting forums for advice; try Ebay to look for a good used one. Good Luck
Every State / city has their own laws. Some don't allow much at all. Where I live, I need a permit for the State Parks in my area and the Beach. NYC also requires a permit for certain parks only. If you don't follow the rules, you get a hefty fine.
Wow these people are jerks. I guess their x boxes broke. Change your dirty underwear that youv been wearing during your two day ''call of duty'' binge, and go do something where youl feel good about ur self afterwards fuckheads.
Let me guess. You sarcastic bitches that are talkin shit are those ''cool'' guys that drink beer in the woods and leave your garbage behind for us to clean up. Get a job, move out of ur moms basement and stop trying to come on youtube solely to criticize othr ppls hbbys
I remember those days back in the 50's. We had nothing to do at times,so we went down to the ball field and see who could throw dimes the farthest. GIVE ME A F---K--G BREAK.
Hi Joe. I remember before I got my first detector I would watch your videos over and over because I was so excited to find my own treasure! You had a great day!
@Mririshhockey I have a great job,a beautiful wife (going on 30 years now), I'm a musician in my church, a singer / songwriter, I fish, tie my own flies and thoroughly enjoy taking walks on the beach or through the woods at first light with my detector in hand. AND, I've actually made quite a few good friends because of this hobby.
You know, you really should strive to grow up and be like me. You might actually enjoy life! :)
@localdeity Considering the inconsideration of dog folks out here in the NY area, the kids are more likely to step on a big ol' dog turd than harm their ankles from a non existing threat.........you would NEVER know Joe (Guy digging in the video) was in your backyard even if he dug 40 plugs, trust me.
I do not "tear up" playing fields. I do not leave holes.
I DO make sure I dig in such a way as the grass will not die and you'd be hard-pressed to see where I dug. "Mr. Squirrel" does far more damage :) I DO make sure I pick up broken glass, sharp piece of metal, knives, pins, syringes and live rounds of every caliber. Heck, I've even picked up trash just lying on the ground because it annoyed me so much that other people are so inconsiderate.
im gona start soon doing my own metal detecting work up in canada! great video but man dont rub your coins when you take them out of the ground seems to me you can bring them all home clean them first no? have the video of digging then video of cleaning and showing !!! thats what im gona doo hehe just need the tools first!
There was nothing set up in this video. I did not have a tripod; trying to keep the camera steady with one hand and dig with the other was hard enough.
i had a mxt, this thing was so touchy, sold it and downgraded to whites classic 5di,this things awesome, found a 1902 barber dime at about 2.5 inchs, oldest silver ive found in 20 years, ive found that the zinc mode always yeilds memorial pennys, not so,some times a wheat will read zinc....so dig all
You seemed a bit excited when you found silver coins. Do they have a higher value? What was the best find you have made to date ? I hope you filled in the holes in the ball field. Some kid could very easily break an ankle, twisting his foot in those holes.
I know Joe G does a great job of filling holes, but I like to leave one or two deep enough to break a knee just to keep those brats in the park paying attention.
when you scrap them youll get about 8x-12x of what they are valued at its all in the weight half dollars are a big score especially walking libertys and bens eisenhowers and kennedys are junk because its after 64'
Actually, Kennedy's from 1965 to 1970 are 40% silver...and the 70's are rare. Also, Ike dollars with the S mintmark may be 40% silver as well if they were from the original special mint sets.
Also, depending on the quality of the walking liberties and bens, you can get much more than 12x from collectors for their numismatic value.
Silver is a rarity in my area. Depending on the location, it could be older coins from the 19th century or 20th. I do have a british colonial copper from the late 1600's. It's incredibly worn but you can make out the silhouette of the heads on the obverse.
Of course, I and others always fill holes. When I dig grassy areas, I try my best to put everything back so you can't see where I've dug.
i metal detect and i just got done with a church and came up EMPTY HANDED i just havent had any luck with metal detecting at all i have a whites prizm 4 any tips????
if anyone can answer my question it would be much appreciated. Ive been looking on the internet to find old places in my town how do you all find out how old a place is in your town because i would like to know.
Research... go to the library, talk to older people in your neighborhood. Look at street names. Many times there's a reason why a street is called "old church road" etc. Try to find old maps. Look at the houses in an area; when were they built? keep diggin' :)
lol....How long did it take you to place the coin there. Look closely. Second part of recording the whole was already dug and all of a sudden, there's a silver quarter???
I should make videos like this. I might get some attention too.
POTBOY.... Your a jealous fool!!! Your the type of person who makes thjose DUMB vids! You probably also know nothing about metal detecting! AND you probably bought your coin collection on EBAY!!!!
You just gotta DIG DIG DIG be patient! Start enjoying the weird things you find and then the coins will start popping up PS... Your name is METDETECTOR4LIFE and you only found ONE coin???? Well anyway, Good luck!
man i wish i could find those old looking coins.are those silver? i found a copper wheat penny that was 1943. that was the only coin i found. i wish it was something more interesting :(
i was amazed at what i found i wasnt detectin but i was searchin through coin rolls and january 2009 i found a mercury dime 1945 in a roll of dimes and I was realy suprised when i saw it I would have thought someone would have taken it. In that 1 month i found 4 silver dimes and i was wondering if anybody else finds them that often
now staring in january ive found 7 silver dimes to mercs 5 roses and 1 buffalo nickel IN COIN ROLLS im told its nearly impossible but i dont know.....
I live in Colorado and the only interesting place I go metal detecting is in the mountains, What is the best digging tool to dig through the dry dirt?
It's strange how silver coins have sort of vanished from circulation. Around 10 years ago you could find silver coins in your change, but I haven't found any in a long time
They're worth more in face value in silver. Lately I've found a couple in change. i think people have fallen on hard times and going to their piggy banks...
As a fellow detector user, I can tell you that i happens. In one day I found a 1901-O barber quarter along with 1902, 1901, 1899, and 1896 barber dimes. Most avid detectorists have a really "good" day from time to time.
That's really not a lot of silver although days like that are very few and very far between. Research is the key if you really want to work at finding silver. I happened to get lucky. Must have been land fill in that small area with some older top soil. I met a guy who's hunted there tons of times in the last 20 years and he couldn't believe it either :)
I use an Explorer II but i also have a CZ-20 (although the Exp II is my favorite). My first MD was a Bounty Hunter Quick Draw II about 5 years ago. I live in new york and hunt mostly on Long Island and in NYC. I love digging parks, woods and the beach whenever I can.
I share your concern, but I can tell you that when digging moist sod like that, you'd be hard pressed to see I was there after I put everything back. There are times when you can be "sloppy" and times when you can't. Digging in the woods and areas with bare spots and weeds are one thing, the outfield on a ball field is another. Lord knows I'm not perfect but I try :)
Squeeze the hole together and there is no signs at all of any hole being dug. There is a lot of places being closed to detectorists for doing unnecessary digging. I think its up to all of us to preserve our hobby by using different methods to avoid plug gutting.Granted Joe did a good job of replaceing the sod
I agree he is making a good job and putting down a cloth to put the dirt on is excellent as thats the way i do it also. bur=t what my point is that plugs for shallow coins need not be dug. The method i use is to use a probe to locate the target, then insert a pair of duckbill pliers in the probe hole and spread the pliers, then rotate 90 degrees and spread again, this will give you a hole slightly larger than your finger and by using your finger and probe you can extract the coin, squeeze hole
With silver prices where they are, I believe the silver content of the coins is worth more than face value :) The ones with the greatest value are those in really good condition and / or with a key date (limited amount in circulation). One of the things NOT to do is rub the dirt off the coins. If I'm in an area where there's older silver, I'm careful. For these "modern" silver I'm not...
how much are metal detecters? i think the oldest coin i have that i found in pocket change is a 1936 penny i have 5 silver quarters 9 silver dimes and i think i have a 1946 nickel
depends on what sort of metal detector you want,if your crazy about the hobby then id get a cscope r1 which is about 500.00 or a minelab explorer 2 which is the best ones which retail at over a grand, ive got a cscope 5mxp which cost me 400.00 new,but now there going at 250.00 its a good piece of kit,i dont do the hobby as much go to rallys mainly, but the best thing ive found is a edward 1st penny from 12ad
Hey Joe, did you ever go back and look for those lost rosies, or to hunt that area again, since? Keep us updated. And more importantly, make some more videos!! Thanks!
I've been to that place many times since then (and so have many others who learned of the spot :) ). I never found them. Could have lost them anywhere I guess. As far as videos are concerned, I'm so lazy ;)
I mean that its like a nation park kinda thing and you arent allowed. But maybe on some private house sites if you ask them first, I dont know, but im sure some would probably say you could, not most of them though. If you really really want to you should try to ask em, worst case, they say no.
Believe it or not, these were found in "situ". If you metal detected you would most definitely know that silver coins come out of the ground, even 200 - 300 years later (depending on soil condition)
I work anywhere there's dirt :) I've worked local parks in Nassau as well as State parks in Suffolk. There are woods on the north and south shores that can produce some oldies too. During the summer I mostly work the beach one the north and south shores. Done pretty well there and have paid off both my machines and then some in finds :)
Hey toiceborn, I have almost the same setting as you Explorer II/X-1 from Sunray/Lesche digger... I just have one more recommendation, get yourself a Plastic Scoop (a.k.a. Treasure Scoop), they're made of ABS plastic, wears like steel and it doesn't scratch coins! They're $8 ~ I bought mine from Jimmy Sierra, Google "jimmy Sierra" ~ or try eBay, just don't get the black one, I suggest a green one, yellow is tacky and the black one, well, you won't see the target unless it's silver haha.
We don't have 1,000 year old coins or relics but we do find historical items that are important to us. There's nothing more rewarding than doing research and discovering new locations with some "history". For me, finding a 100 year old coin or 200 year old relic is a big thing :) (and well worth it)
@bobstio

At the beach I've found some nice stuff; enough over the last couple of years to pay for both my ExpII and a CZ20 (and then some)
toiceborn 2 years ago
if anyone can answer my question it would be much appreciated. Ive been looking on the internet to find old places in my town how do you all find out how old a place is in your town because i would like to know.
mozaris12 2 years ago
Research... go to the library, talk to older people in your neighborhood. Look at street names. Many times there's a reason why a street is called "old church road" etc. Try to find old maps. Look at the houses in an area; when were they built? keep diggin' :)

metldetector4life 3 years ago
metldetector4life.......... If you have a 1943 copper penny then you should take it to a coin shop and have it appraised, they are very rare.

It's strange how silver coins have sort of vanished from circulation. Around 10 years ago you could find silver coins in your change, but I haven't found any in a long time
Waterboy01270 3 years ago
They're worth more in face value in silver. Lately I've found a couple in change. i think people have fallen on hard times and going to their piggy banks...
toiceborn 3 years ago
very hard to believe he found all that silver.
miracledrug5150 3 years ago
As a fellow detector user, I can tell you that i happens. In one day I found a 1901-O barber quarter along with 1902, 1901, 1899, and 1896 barber dimes. Most avid detectorists have a really "good" day from time to time.
jmgifts2002 3 years ago
That's really not a lot of silver although days like that are very few and very far between. Research is the key if you really want to work at finding silver. I happened to get lucky. Must have been land fill in that small area with some older top soil. I met a guy who's hunted there tons of times in the last 20 years and he couldn't believe it either :)

you never fully clear out an area! i,ve pounded an area year after year and we still pull it out!

draadstaal33 3 years ago
What type of metal detector do you use? Do you like it? Is it your first metal detector? and What state do you live and metal detect in? :)
kaerfirarref 3 years ago
I use an Explorer II but i also have a CZ-20 (although the Exp II is my favorite). My first MD was a Bounty Hunter Quick Draw II about 5 years ago. I live in new york and hunt mostly on Long Island and in NYC. I love digging parks, woods and the beach whenever I can.
toiceborn 3 years ago
I share your concern, but I can tell you that when digging moist sod like that, you'd be hard pressed to see I was there after I put everything back. There are times when you can be "sloppy" and times when you can't. Digging in the woods and areas with bare spots and weeds are one thing, the outfield on a ball field is another. Lord knows I'm not perfect but I try :)
toiceborn 3 years ago
Squeeze the hole together and there is no signs at all of any hole being dug. There is a lot of places being closed to detectorists for doing unnecessary digging. I think its up to all of us to preserve our hobby by using different methods to avoid plug gutting.Granted Joe did a good job of replaceing the sod
kokokoiy 3 years ago
I agree he is making a good job and putting down a cloth to put the dirt on is excellent as thats the way i do it also. bur=t what my point is that plugs for shallow coins need not be dug. The method i use is to use a probe to locate the target, then insert a pair of duckbill pliers in the probe hole and spread the pliers, then rotate 90 degrees and spread again, this will give you a hole slightly larger than your finger and by using your finger and probe you can extract the coin, squeeze hole
kokokoiy 3 years ago
Actually, he seems to be doing a nice job of preserving the sod.

With silver at 9.38 an oz, that Washington is worth about $1.70, or about 6.8 times face value. Nice find!

hollowpointred 3 years ago
With silver prices where they are, I believe the silver content of the coins is worth more than face value :) The ones with the greatest value are those in really good condition and / or with a key date (limited amount in circulation). One of the things NOT to do is rub the dirt off the coins. If I'm in an area where there's older silver, I'm careful. For these "modern" silver I'm not...
toiceborn 3 years ago
Do those coins have any value above their face value?
myndenway 3 years ago
definitely. A silver quarter is worth about 5 bucks right now but can be worth much more depending on the date.

gaurd5002 3 years ago
depends on what sort of metal detector you want,if your crazy about the hobby then id get a cscope r1 which is about 500.00 or a minelab explorer 2 which is the best ones which retail at over a grand, ive got a cscope 5mxp which cost me 400.00 new,but now there going at 250.00 its a good piece of kit,i dont do the hobby as much go to rallys mainly, but the best thing ive found is a edward 1st penny from 12ad
pemberton1986 3 years ago
Hey Joe, did you ever go back and look for those lost rosies, or to hunt that area again, since? Keep us updated. And more importantly, make some more videos!! Thanks!
Twistidd 3 years ago
I've been to that place many times since then (and so have many others who learned of the spot :) ). I never found them. Could have lost them anywhere I guess. As far as videos are concerned, I'm so lazy ;)

no... not on the battlefield itself
bonsaiboy123 3 years ago
what do you mean not on the battlefield itself?
WattaPug 3 years ago
I mean that its like a nation park kinda thing and you arent allowed. But maybe on some private house sites if you ask them first, I dont know, but im sure some would probably say you could, not most of them though. If you really really want to you should try to ask em, worst case, they say no.
I would give it a shot, good luck!
bonsaiboy123 3 years ago
do you sell them? if so how much did you make for them?
hnava74 3 years ago
if anybody believes that these coins were found 'in situ' think again..they have come up almost clean despite sticky soil conditions
flupduck 3 years ago
They are silver coins, numbnuts.
You obviously don't metal detect.
Twistidd 3 years ago
Believe it or not, these were found in "situ". If you metal detected you would most definitely know that silver coins come out of the ground, even 200 - 300 years later (depending on soil condition)

do you work the nassau or suffolk parks?..i have a Explorer II also,,,HH,,,
wwerockz1 3 years ago
I work anywhere there's dirt :) I've worked local parks in Nassau as well as State parks in Suffolk. There are woods on the north and south shores that can produce some oldies too. During the summer I mostly work the beach one the north and south shores. Done pretty well there and have paid off both my machines and then some in finds :)
toiceborn 3 years ago
are those 1930's quarters worth more than 25 cents
claypwns 3 years ago
Well, the silver content is worth more than .25
toiceborn 3 years ago
Hey toiceborn, I have almost the same setting as you Explorer II/X-1 from Sunray/Lesche digger... I just have one more recommendation, get yourself a Plastic Scoop (a.k.a. Treasure Scoop), they're made of ABS plastic, wears like steel and it doesn't scratch coins! They're $8 ~ I bought mine from Jimmy Sierra, Google "jimmy Sierra" ~ or try eBay, just don't get the black one, I suggest a green one, yellow is tacky and the black one, well, you won't see the target unless it's silver haha.

I wouldnt bother detecting in America, the country has no history, so relics and coins are hardly worth searching for.
cunnycunny 3 years ago
We don't have 1,000 year old coins or relics but we do find historical items that are important to us. There's nothing more rewarding than doing research and discovering new locations with some "history". For me, finding a 100 year old coin or 200 year old relic is a big thing :) (and well worth it)
