  • HMMM im not impressed...there is no emotion with her voice and the lyrics...and no connection...(that i can hear)

  • A competition! My score is 8 out of 10. She sings wonderfully, and with some expression. She loses a point for charging round the stage and singing in the dark.

  • I saw Elizabeth Futral (not in your line-up) do this role last month in Louisville. She puts tremendous acting into this role (see youtube), which I miss in Mary's otherwise lovely performance.

  • so far - there has not been one singer in this contest without horrible reviews from someone. Who has the best voice? Probably Jesus....but he's not down here singing opera. People are waaaay too critical!!! how many of them are actual opera singers with CAREERS ?

  • Where was this?? what year?? She is singing at Glimmerglass this summer as Violetta

  • I also saw Mary at LOKC last week. Her voice filled the house with glorious sound even when facing upstage. I concur with tenore23 that Netrebko should be her dressing maid

  • I also saw Mary this week at the Kansas City Lyric. It was amazing to have someone of her stature at the Lyric. Her interpretation of the last act was emotional. I saw her during the Sunday performance at 2, after a week of performances she sounded amazing.

  • I just saw Mary Dunleavy in this role last night in Kansas City: it was glorious! she was magnificent! Having heard her live on stage, I can say that she transported the audience to stratospheric heights of aesthetic delight! All verbiage aside, it was a wonderful production of La Traviata, and she was the brilliant gem at the center of it. I drove to Chicago last fall(from 8 hrs away in Nowhere, MO) to hear Dessay in Manon---I'd do the same for Dunleavy. She's simply GREAT!

  • Netrebko should be Mary's dresser maid. Mary sings rings around Netrebko.

  • @tenore23 hahaha not a chance.

  • @Whistlejocket You obviously have been listening with the wrong part of your body. There is no way in heaven or hell that Nebby will ever sing Violetta at this level. Never

  • @tenore23 You must be a Shwarzkopf whatever fan right? Or at least an American. Go eat pie.

  • @Whistlejocket Well, Shwarzkopf was a decent singer and one who knew what was good for her and what was not, unlike a diva of recent vintage. I am not sure if you know this, but it has been proved that your nationality does not make you hear better or worse, so you can take your xenophobic comment and shove it.

You spewing this kind of shit will not make Nebby sing any better; I can still mention 5 sopranos who sing her repertoire better.

  • @tenore23 Xenophobic? You indirect humanoid, for instance your Tabloid 'Time' wouldn't give the best soprano any respect whatsoever, because Americans accused her of being a nazi. She wanted to go home to see her parents.

Try sending an F18 starfighter through your ears to make some space for educating your selves. As Chaucer would say, "I fart in your general direction" You probably haven't a clue who she might be either.

  • @Whistlejocket Sure, and when i am done with it, i will send it to you so you can put it up your ass and explode you dumb moron. You are nothing but the worst kind of idiot there is, you think that loving that throaty sound and that sloppy musicianship makes you some kind of expert. I just have to laugh at you and your idiocy.

Read it again: Netrebko is a hack that should have stayed doing what she does best: MOPPING FLOORS

  • Thanks for the expert bit, I wouldn't dare use it to mention you, because you have no idea what you ramble on about. As for Shwarzkopf, it wouldn't matter how many G notes her father stuffed down her throat, she would still be a token screamer.

  • @Whistlejocket are you still rambling stupidly about Schwarzkopf? Is there no limit to your stupidity?

  • @tenore23 I hear there is a Rhianna concert near you tonight, you should go there.

  • She is gorgeous like Netrebko. This is the first time I'm hearing her. She's not the best but has a pretty voice.

  • She is so brilliant!

    I love her live.

  • I usually tend to like warm rich voices, but anyone who has a chance to hear Mary live in a hall will fall in love with her and her unique and sparkling voice.

I would like to hear some of the people who wrote less than glowing remarks above sing this or anything for that matter. Mary is a great Prima Donna who sings this great role on the greatest stages in the world and you are a bunch of ignorant nobodys whose greatest acheivement is having internet access.

  • Pretty good though nothing outstanding in my opinion.

  • Well lit production! All you can see is her dress!

  • 4/3

  • I went to high school with Mary, and even then everyone knew then that she was going to be something special. I went to the Met to see her last year in Traviata, and was so incredibly proud. Brava, Mary!

  • Movie star waiting her cab to the oscar's ceremony

  • You did a good job, Mary! 4/4

  • I saw her at the Met this February and I was a little disappointed, primarily based on her performance of this aria. 3/4

  • She is very beautiful and she has a nice voice, but not the best for this role.

  • I agree with many of the others. Her voice isn't all that, but dramatically she is a good Violetta. 3.5/4.5. Hey everyone! Check out Elizabeth Futral in this role in my videos. She's really unbelievable.

  • Her characterization is excellent, albeit not very exciting. She captures the complex emotions of Violetta and is able to express them through her voice. It also looks like a more vulnerable and tormented character, but without exaggerations, what I like very much. The voice isn't great, but very beautiful, silvery and homogeneous, and she sings the fioritura with ease, musicality and excellent breath control. She doesn't look totally comfortable with the vocal tricks, however. 4/4.5

  • I find her voice somewhat generic and lacking in light and shade. There is nothing too exciting from a technical standpoint. However, I think she captures Violettta's vulnerability and ambiguousness well.

    Singing : 3

    Characterization : 3.5

  • 4/4. A few problems keeping up with the orchestra but overall committed to the role and vocally satisfying.

  • Dunleavy always seems to be good but never great. I think she is an interesting artist and has a lot to contribute, she is fairly solid here, the coloratura in the end seems a little sloopy and then she rushes the final note, and it goes sharp. Overall 4/3

  • I find her rather charming! Vocally not stratospheric but she is a good Violetta. 4/4
