I think there are two different ways to actually start one is to rev high and slowly feather the clutch out and the other which I do is to not put on much throttle till the clutch is out further so you start moving using the friction zone rather than the throttle. LOL @ the end I hate when that happens you just space and stall.
haha when i stall during parking i never say it wasnt on purpose =D when im backing up in my car and stall in deep snow or something i just leave it there and pretend im done parking. :)
The guy is right in that you drag the clutch for awhile, BUT, there's a few things to note: A) MCYs use wet clutches, you can drag 'em all day long compared to a car clutch. B) Anybody that drags MCYs will tell you, you need good throttle/clutch feathering if you want to keep the front end down.
But for daily riding when you're not on it hard? You can def. let the clutch out a pretty good bit quicker. The harder you need to start, the more you need to 'ease' the engagement (longer drag).
Hey i know this isn't the topic for this vid, but M13 do you know any good scooter site that will ship like vintage scooters like a Vespo scooter internationally? or any scooter site?
i do agree, havnt noticed it but not i think about it, i think you do feather the clutch too much when doing fast starts, try pulling away at a few k less rpm
It's quite logical that you use a slippery clutch to reach the max. torque in an instant, just to have the sensation of pulling up that fast. Most of the jap 2/4-in-line riders tend to do this. I ride a Buell. If I would do that the bike would immediately backflip.
@mbcyclery the point of slipping at high revs is to get access to the power band at a lower speed than even first gear permits. You essentially use the friction of the clutch as a gear ratio. It's not efficient, but it is faster than letting out at 2K. On a 4 cylinder bike or other bike with most torque in high revs, you need to rev up even higher (and with yet more risk of wheelies).
perhaps, but within say 10-15 feet im already fully engaged and spreading on WOT. it's faster for me than playing with the discs for 30 feet of travel.
I don't have a motorcycle but in my CAR, when I first got it, I made the mistake to rev it up to high RPM and let the clutch out slowly as usual (we were on a hill, I didn't want the car to roll back/stall etc)... Shortly after my car was filled with the smell of burnt metal and stayed there the whole way home.
When starting with high RPM you have to basically just drop the clutch, or else you risk damaging it.
@brainiac147 cars have dry clutches. Motorbikes usually have wet clutches - they are cooled by oil. Slipping the clutch is far more common on a motorbike.
just a quick question when using a geared bike should you always bring your Rpms up a little bit when your about to pull away before letting the clutch out and then bring it out slowly and smoothly (decent rate) or should you do it at the same time? for both hill starts and Flat ground?
Riding the clutch will burn it out much sooner than not. No need for such high rpm's. Unless of course u want to make a lot of noise from the muffler between short stops. I think 50 yrs. of riding bikes allows me to comment on most bike topics. JOHN.
Have you ever thoroughly explained what a typical day is like teaching kids English over seas? I am considering teaching ESL, so I am just trying to find out what it is like.
@Tyrant597 I have. But he has A LOT of videos and I have been subbed to him for over 2 years. I know he explains some of what he does, but if I remember correctly, he doesn't go into great detail what the daily routine is like.
If you let the clutch out too fast while still at low speed, it will easily wheelie. Try letting the last half / last third of the clutch slip out faster, rather than speeding up throughout the whole amount of travel. It should speed up the acceleration and shouldn't bring the wheel up
@13mordeth If it all goes wrong, blame someone else lol. On a serious note, I can generally get 4 second 0-60 times out of my GPZ500 (EX500 to you, probably) using this method, hence my input.
It's called coordination and if your not going to ride the clutch you have to let off on the throttle a bit. Again it's called coordination. either way it's your bike and your money, I don't kill any bike I ride either but I can miss a gear no matter what I'm riding. There are 2 kinds of riders. those who have been down and those who are going down, it's best to learn young. Like before your 50. Be cheerful
1 hour isn't enough time for m13 to get around a go kart track. In all seriousness, your clutch seems fine to me on a 650r. If it were a 600cc supersport, you could release faster, but there's a huge difference between inline 4 and parallel twin.
I do wheelies in like every video I make but the unexpected ones scare the shit out of you. It don't matter if your real good at them cuz when it comes up when you didn't want it to.... Fuck
@TheGardenSnake Just subbed to you. Whilst i've only seen one of your videos (i plan on watching them all) from what i saw you remind me of Mordeths long lost brother.
@FMMProductions Well with the Canadian Mafia after our parents they knew we wouldn't be safe. It was a hard decision but they sent me to Texas and M13 to Taiwan. That was many years ago....
i think what the guy originally meant was to start off the line with lower RPMs (i.e. not insta-wheelie RPM), let the clutch out fully, then accelerate with the engine fully connected to the wheel. it's a technique you have to use with (for example) 4-wheel-drive sports cars and the like, and it stops the clutch from burning out and also provides better 0-60 times.... letting the clutch slip makes your acceleration slower and slipping at high RPMs burns it out quickly.
ive showed some people how to ride and the way u nornally do it is the way i teach cause that way the person doesnt wheelie and they also dont stall....but i tell them to work on clutch and throttle and they are good within 3 months
I have an ER6-F also. I tend to use lower RPM, drop the clutch much earlier, then wind-out first gear with the engine fully 'connected' to the back wheel (no clutch slip). Your method of slipping much of first gear, but using higher RPM may actually be a quicker way of getting off the line. I'm just don't wanna burn my clutch out too early cos im tight, lol
You let the clutch a bit quicker but you accelerated the same amount didn't you? That's why you went 11 o' clock, try letting the clutch quicker but accelerate less! I think it will work =)
Same shit happened to me dawg. I'm a newbie right and one day coming off a red light trying to sort of race my friend in his car, I let the clutch off fast but gave the usual amount of gas. 10 oclock wheelie and I didn't know what the fruit was going on. Heart attack. Thankfully no issues but I'll stick with turtle clutchin. Can't wait for Spring!
A clutch wears out the most during the slipping phase. The secret is to let it out as soon as possible but with low revs. If you're wheeling then you need to back off.
I still haven't got a license, nut I'm in the process of getting it.While learning to ride a got accustomed to doing what you just said - bringing the RPMs up and then releasing the clutch slowly. My instructor insist that this is wrong and that I should twist the throttle and release the clutch in the same time.Keep in mind that I'm doing all that on a 125cc Honda CBR,so even when I let the clutch fast at 5000 RPM the front wheel isn't going anywhere vertically.
@13mordeth this vid was a little inspirational lol i cant seem to embarass myself in little bits and let it go the way u joke about it..especially the comment about the stoppie accident in front of the shop lol... thanks
@coast2coast00 Well it was a real stall......but......it wasn't really a clutch issue. I thought I was in neutral and let the clutch out...but I was in gear. But still...if I had been more aware I could have pulled the clutch back in before it stalled....so maybe it is clutch.
interesting, i feather the clutch longer than i should too maybe i should try it =D, and i was half expecting the outro-clip to be the video of you stalling your bike when you were trying to go from a standstill lol XD.
@jeenyus720 You know that motorcycle shop I always go to? Well one time I tried doing a stoppie in front of the entrance. And there was an empty pack of ciggarettes on the ground.....and I crashed in front of all the motorcycle customers and employees. LOL. And then a couple of weeks after that I was at the shop and an employee was telling me about some loser who crashed in front of their shop.....and I was like "Yeah.....that was me."
@13mordeth Reminds me of the time I took my bike in for a service and the mechanic threw it down the road, right outside the workshop in front of a dozen people. I was not impressed. It was an Aprilia and it took a month to get the parts for it to be fixed :(
@TFDLegendNL The majority of people prefer Pepsi to Coke....but those same people still buy Coke when they go to the store. Pepsi has the better drink and Coke has the better advertising........advertising wins.
i'm new to bikes but my sense is that things have changed, engines now generally designed to feather and slip clutch while keeping revs in power range, and different engine types (2 cyls etc) are smoother through different power bands .. so do what works for you and your'n bike .. i've watched training vids of guys on the biggest bikes teach slow mo maneuvering skills, and it is all about keeping the revs centered for what you're doing and fine tune with clutch .. go with your own instincts !
I was about to ask you if you ever stall off camera, but then you stalled lol... has it been windy there? why was the fence knocked over at the track?
Dude, your vids are the main reason my dream to own a motorcycle hasn't died yet. Keep it up! Hopefully I'll be able to find a job soon and get on the road...
I think there are two different ways to actually start one is to rev high and slowly feather the clutch out and the other which I do is to not put on much throttle till the clutch is out further so you start moving using the friction zone rather than the throttle. peak torque on that bike is around 7k rpm anything over that is really to much.
if you have your rpm that high and your front wheel is not off the ground you are not letting the clutch out fast enough.
just aim to float the front tire and to engage the clutch as fast as possible.

TFDLegendNL 1 month ago
