@joshuancts well are you retarded.??...if you were black in the 1960s you would vote republican...you know the party that was created to free blacks...hint hint ...democrats still have slaves ...blacks are political sheep
I'm not saying I agree with Foxx but Helms was actually still a Democrat (and also wasn't in US Congress yet) when the whole Civil Rights Act 1964 happened. However, I believe that Strom Thurmond changed party identification shortly after it's passage.
Anyway, I'm not here to fuel any flames, just providing some technical details.
When it comes time to blacks republicans especially the coservative ones should stay out of discussions involving blacks and black history. I have never heard them say anything that wasn't offensive or wrong. Conservatives think we are stupid as they always have.
@aceflashheart What about all the northern conservative republicans that strongly supported it and championed civil rights for decades prior. Calvin coolidge (Vermont), Warren Harding (Ohio), Everett Dirksen (illinois). All born and raised in the north, all very conservative, all major leaders in the movement to bring civil rights to blacks. Woodrow Wilson was a deeply racist man and opposed civil rights and women's suffrage, yet he is somehow the father of modern progressivism. interesting...?
@Willredd94 Only Glenn Beck thinks that Woodrow Wilson was the father of modern "progressivism". If Woodrow Wilson is a key figure in any major modern politic philosophy it's prob. Neo-Conservatism, not anything of the left.
@aceflashheart Well Neoconservatives are from the left they were socialists and anti-communists who switched over to the Republicans b/c of the vietnam war protesters so yes. But modern progressives still rate Woodrow Wilson as one of the greatest presidents in US history in all survey's. Ask a republican or conservative and he'll be near the bottom.
The old biddy is right about Helms not being in the Senate at the time, but the old fool was running a TV station in North Carolina and putting on nightly rants agaisnt everything that the civil right mopvement or the Democratic Party stood for.
US Integration is the worst mistake made A failed 1960 social experiment-betrayed When segregation was the law of the land Life was far better for every women & man Now it's a race war, that will never end Civil Rights is a disaster & we pretend Segregation worked before & will again How many times does it take to explain Oil and water does not mix & never will How much more blood will have to spill Before we learn the enduring social art That we all do better when we're apart
all your looking at is the numbers...which by itself shows which party was leading the civil rights act.
if you'd do more then just look at the votes, you'd see that the dems helped very little in passing the act. majority were against it until the collapse of the kkk (most of dems at that time were tied to the kkk). once kkk fell apart then some dems began backing it.
I remember 1964 very well. I watched republicans and conservatives like Barry Goldwater and William F. Buckley denounce civil rights legislation as a communist plot. It was the liberals in the Democratic Party that led the fight against the conservative Southern Democrats and their conservative Republican allies who tried to stop all civil rights legislation. The Republican Party was as white and racist back then as it is today.
She makes an invalied comparison to her party's political standpoints of today and 50 years ago. This statement would only appeal to an American who is dumb enough to take her word for it.
This archaic minded fossil doesn't recognize that democrats used to be the republicans when this all started. These parties change their mind about every....8 years or so.
African Americans were republicans up until JFK because of Lincoln. Once JFK came along the majority of blacks switched to democrats. "Democrats were trying to block civil rights in the 60s" Every hear of JFK or RFK? They were killed for their strong support of civil rights.
We're working on giving her the boot here in NC. Give us some time :\
You should look up her campaigns - she once fought Vernon Robinson, who would be a great subject for a mental health study (crazy black republican - think Helms or Thurmond in a new skin).
I've seen this woman before. What a stupid thing to say that the republicans passed the civil rights bill. If it weren't for the Dems, black women still couldn't vote. What a moron
"Ask not what your country can do for you......ask what you can do for your country."
What Democrat said that? Certainly none of the idiot Libtards now....the same who want to socialize medicine, nationalized the banks/ auto industry, and are spending money faster than Timmy boy can print it.
But "KKK" Byrd can still wipe his ass with minimal help.
Our education system just failed when I read this comment.
Do your research. The GOP voted in a larger percentage for the bill. They weren't the majority though and did have the democrats to help out, but less than the GOP percentage.
much like your spelling, your knowledge of history is also incorrect.
republicans and democrats are just names that (supposedly) represent political ideologies. during the civil war days, the republicans were the liberals (north), the democrats were the conservatives (south). these names switched 2 or 3 decades after the civil war but the ideologies stayed the same.
it was the southern conservatives that owned slaves and guess what... Abe Lincoln was a liberal.
As much as I find it odd that there are posters who think it was the dems that got the bill passed, the congressman is no longer part of the KKK. I think it's time we overlook that, considering he regrets joining the KKK now.
Do you guys know anything about history? The Democrats were the START of the KKK. They fought AGAINST civil rights the ENTIRE time. IT WAS the Republican party that got slaves released and got the vote by their majority support! MY GOD do a little research! Cardoza is a COMPLETE IDIOT.
You're not taking in the facts, just a bunch of liberal lies. The GOP had a larger percentage than dems when voting for the bill. Goldwater opposed it not because of racism.
moron the parties have switched completely the names that applied the have no meaning now the fact is that the right wing of this country is now and has always been against civil rights and the left wing is for it. Lincoln was a lefty 99.9999 percent of kkk members today call themselves republican

LBJ did it and he did it knowing the Democratic party would lose the South for at the very least a generation but he knew that it was the right thing to do no matter what the cost.

what the fuck ever, republicans. conservatives have no substance. History tells us the the longest filabuster was during the civil rights, which was by the republicans. Aww grandma. read more books.
thank you and your family's fictional news channel for keeping America informed of what really happened in America's history. If only there were more people like you holding elective office, then we could deny all progress whatsoever by re-remembering what actually happened in our history.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 tore the party apart, and the Republicans siphoned off a lot of southern, racist Democrats. It was quite a different party than it is today.
And about Al Gore, Sr.: lots of good people come from shitty parents. So take your guilt by association argument and shove it up your ass.
Man alive North Carolina vote this batshit nut out of office. She needs to be shown the door people. She has just taken part in revisionist history. It's hard to believe that people would even take this loon seriously. Please North Carolina get rid of her come next election cycle and replace her with someone who has some brains.
The GOP is now full of those democrats who were against the civil rights act. They were the dixiecrats and changed parties when LBJ signed the civil rights act.
The current republican party is full of those old racist dixiecrats today.
What a surprise but according to wikipedia, "Helms was an outspoken conservative who opposed many progressive policies regarding race such as school integration, the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act."
OMG! Anyone this ignorant has absolutely no business...none...writing legislation.
She the perfect example of a right-wing extremist who is re-writing history to suit her delusions about the countries history and the GOP's place in it.
They have Serious delusions of grandeur, and no grasp of the facts ;)
Yes, Ms. Foxx, pointing that little fact about Jesse Helms at the end is about the only truth you've spouted out of your mouth. She should be expelled from congress for being insane along with that other loon, Bachmann and throw them in an asylum aka "re-education camp"
Unbelievable. Simply unbelievable. Unfortunately for her, facts surrounding a very out spoken opponent of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was Barry Goldwater, the Republican presidential candidate in 1964 who was crushed, in part, to his vote against the Civil Rights Act.
Goldwater didn't represent the entire GOP at the time. A large percentage of the GOP voted for the bill. The reason why Goldwater was against it was not because of racism but rather it favored affirmative action policies and other policies that would give more advantages to blacks than whites (as he wanted both to be equal).
this is why the gop is going to lose in 2010. i dont care even even if barack obama and osama bin laden are found naked in bed together. the republicans will still lose
since obama won the election, people like virginia foxx and doug hoffmann have been running the party. we saw what hoffman did...his actions caused the gop to lose a seat that should never have been held by a democrat ...and now viriginia foxx is continuing to drive independents and even republicans into the dem party.
Ms. Foxx proves whore's come in all ages. "Gentle Lady" my ass. She's is a whore of the filthiest line.Reprehensible, despicable gold digging bush loving good for nothing but jail tax dollars republican WHORE. Death to the Republican Party..
She wants to talk about revisionist history?!? The civil rights movement shifted the political control of ve South from the Democrats to use Republicans. The racist members of the dems fled in droves to the republican party. This is common knowledge! She is either an idiot or a damned liar. Probably both.
the only reason more republicans supported that legislation was because the southern racist democrats hadn't yet fled the democratic party for the republican party. total bs by another right wing distortionist.
exactly. moderate republicans were basically purged after that and all the southern dems who opposed civil rights legislation switched to the republicans.
The GOP is a "legend" in their OWN minds! Joe Wilson where are you when they need you? Maybe at a KKK event launching Sarah Palins run for 2012? Go KKK, your ranks are getting stronger. GOP and civil rights? Hell, we can't even get the WH to support civil rights? Isn't this the same "wack job" who said that the Matthew Shepard attack was a robbery gone wrong? Remember, the ones who beat the hell out of a young man and claimed it was HIS FAULT?
The GOP was against extending the Voting Rights act in 2006. How dare these Southerners perpetrate the fraud that the GOP freed the slaves, was for civil rights, etc. It is well known that the Southern racist Democrats left the party because of Civil Rights in the 60's.
The fact is, the GOP was started around the Civil War,was the Party of the North and fought against the South.
The GOP is now the party of the South and white southerner mentality.

It wasn't about party - Southern conservatives voted against it, nothern liberals voted for it.
It just so happens that back then... there was such a thing as a southern, conservative Democrat, in fact they controlled the south pretty much.
After 1964 the Democrats lost the south forever, and ever since then it's been a Republican stronghold.
Just looking at the party percentile votes is failing to see the wood for the trees.

The original House version:[9]
The Senate version:[9] * Democratic Party: 46-21 (69%-31%) * Republican Party: 27-6 (82%-18%)
The Senate version, voted on by the House:[9] * Democratic Party: 153-91 (63%-37%) * Republican Party: 136-35 (80%-20%)

thank you and your family's fictional news channel for keeping America informed of what really happened in America's history. If only there were more people like you holding elective office, then we could deny all progress whatsoever by re-remembering what actually happened in our history.

Ah so another member of the league of bat shit crazy has received their allotment of enough rope to hang themselves. Carry on!

Virginia Foxx must be the stupidest person in Congress - and, yes, I'm including Bachmann

Man alive North Carolina vote this batshit nut out of office. She needs to be shown the door people. She has just taken part in revisionist history. It's hard to believe that people would even take this loon seriously. Please North Carolina get rid of her come next election cycle and replace her with someone who has some brains.

My God! Does she really believe this crap?! If so, why do they keep electing her? She's clearly insane!

The GOP is now full of those democrats who were against the civil rights act. They were the dixiecrats and changed parties when LBJ signed the civil rights act.
The current republican party is full of those old racist dixiecrats today.

Someday soon Rep. Foxx will claim that the Republicans sponsored Columbus's voyages to the New World.
jimtrueblue99 2 years ago 5
Oh the NUTCASE makes a claim about Helms.
What a surprise but according to wikipedia, "Helms was an outspoken conservative who opposed many progressive policies regarding race such as school integration, the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act."
pbacker01 2 years ago 2
WHAT?.....WHAT? Foxx is a damn fool.
"Will the gentleman yield? HELL NO" Seems like it's catching on, though in this case the argument she made is coocoo for coco puffs.

OMG! Anyone this ignorant has absolutely no business...none...writing legislation.
She the perfect example of a right-wing extremist who is re-writing history to suit her delusions about the countries history and the GOP's place in it.
They have Serious delusions of grandeur, and no grasp of the facts ;)

Listen to how proud she sounds about her one true statement at the end. The old cunt is a disgrace, not only to her party, but to this country.

Yes, Ms. Foxx, pointing that little fact about Jesse Helms at the end is about the only truth you've spouted out of your mouth. She should be expelled from congress for being insane along with that other loon, Bachmann and throw them in an asylum aka "re-education camp"
korogaru213 2 years ago 2
Should probably change her name to Virginia Foxx News, she's about as informed as those dipshits. Typical southern right wing moran.....

Unbelievable. Simply unbelievable. Unfortunately for her, facts surrounding a very out spoken opponent of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was Barry Goldwater, the Republican presidential candidate in 1964 who was crushed, in part, to his vote against the Civil Rights Act.
thisaintsweettea 2 years ago 2

Death to the Republican Party..
callouschristian 2 years ago 6
She wants to talk about revisionist history?!? The civil rights movement shifted the political control of ve South from the Democrats to use Republicans. The racist members of the dems fled in droves to the republican party. This is common knowledge! She is either an idiot or a damned liar. Probably both.
doctender77 2 years ago 5
virginia foxx lied.
Democrats passed the Civil Rights act of 1964 by wide margins
Democrats: 69%-31% in the senate
Democrats: 63%-37% in the house.
The republican margins were wider in favor, but WHAT happens when their votes are broken down by region?
ALL southern republicans voted against the civil rights act of 1964.
repugnicants hate freedom, repugnicants hate the truth, repugnicants hate America.
KataVideo 2 years ago 10
the only reason more republicans supported that legislation was because the southern racist democrats hadn't yet fled the democratic party for the republican party. total bs by another right wing distortionist.
itsacanething 2 years ago 8
exactly. moderate republicans were basically purged after that and all the southern dems who opposed civil rights legislation switched to the republicans.

This Foxx is a first rate piece of shit. Dissolve the Union so we don't have to listen to nutjobs like this.

Say what you will about the Republican party, but they are not the party of civil rights, at least not since the 1800s.
Has this woman no shame? She's not twisting the truth, she's not spinning, she is flat out lying on the floor of the House of Representatives.

V. Foxx is a perfect GOP fit, a simpleton.
