You can most definitely tell he's one of your picking influences, Sounds great. Excellent pickin. I've been working picking through the breaks on this one and you drilled it.
@elrampo More like I managed my way through it. My version is "in the spirit of" the original, that's all. Don't try to get it too exact- it will only distract you.
Very nice. this is my favorite version and also dead on. I have been trying to learn this one but can only find tab that is way off. Can you please show me the tab or a video lesson on this song.
This is one of my favorite Prine tunes. The version I have is of him at a bar or coffee shop. You can hear bottles clanking in the background. Awesome!
Love the song, and love your version - just outstanding. Do you have it available on mp3 by chance? ("Rig the Jig" does a Celtic-flavored cover of MH that is well worth checking out too BTW).
.... you're by chance from Savannah, are you?..... I had a friend who died a while back who was a huge Prine fan...... and you sound a lot like he did.... perhaps you're a cousin?....
nice one ,iveonly just started putting john prine covers on you tube myself .i have been looking at your site for a while and heard quite a few songs you play ive never heard before.keep em coming .5*
... they most certainly do... and thank you for your kind words..... actually, the very first video that I posted for youtube was of his brother covering a John Prine song at his wake..... feel free to check it out, if you wish......
G, C and D7. I'm fingering the D7 as: 2xx21x (relative to the capo.) I think Prine just plays that chord holding down a regular D7 but with his thumb on the 2nd fret of the low E string. Instead, I've got my middle finger holding that fret- ring finger 2nd fret on G string and forefinger on 1st fret G string.
It's just the fingering I learned it with and it kinda looks like a B7 in this vid- is that the bit that prompted your question?
Really good version. Somebody commented on your singing....good enough if you ask me. Having angelpipes ain't nearly as important as the ability to transfer that special tone in the song... Clearly a fiver*****
Thanks! And I think you're right- Celine Dion has "angelpipes" but there's something sanitized and soul-less about her singing, to my ears anyway. Give me craggy-voiced Prine any day.
Excuse me, but has anyone ever hear John Prine's voice. Many years ago when Prine's voice was better than it is now his voice was described as a virtual gravel pit. True talent always surfaces as in Prine's case. This guy is awesome and the finger picking is outstanding.
Excellent work! John was in Anchorage last night and blew us away. It is a happy occasion and also sad. This song always makes me choke up... I suppose it means a lot to all of us who have lost their Dad. Peace to all hearts.
Outstanding job there bud. My buddies and I play a lot of John's songs. You'd fit in just right back in our town. Glad you posted this to be found and heard by those of us that have listened to Mr. Prine's music for a good while and for those to discover that are looking for or just stumble upon it.
Thanks, freightdog! I've always been on the lookout for a town where I can fit in just right. Please consider posting some Prine tunes performed by you and your buddies!
Wow, I've been trying to figure out how to finger pick like John for about 25 years now (I guess I learn slowly sometimes) and you have just opened up a whole new playing style to me. Thanks so much for the videos.
Sorry but I don't have any tab- worked the pattern out by ear, but it's really just G C and D7. D7 played as: 200210, with a hammer-on on that B string. When playing G and C, the little finger makes occasional special guest appearances on the third fret of the B string during the intro and interludes. The rest of the pattern is simple alternating thumb. Hope that helps!
yeah this song is absolutely unreal just played it at a coffee shop people love it. absolutely unreal especially that seconid and third verse. im from nashville saw john at walgreens no more thana three weeks ago. what g.. makes me feel warm inside to know other people respect this music as much as i do... awesome man im glad you like it
I've seen all your JP covers and you are the best out there by far. Your fingerpicking is amazing and your vocals convey the emotions of each song beautifully. If you're not sure what to cover next may I suggest One Red Rose, Blue Umbrella or 6 O'Clock News??
Excellent suggestions- those are great songs that I have played in the past but then lost track of. Perhaps I should re-acquaint myself with those classics...
This is great picking right here... Thank you so much for sharing. GREAT!

to get you going it's something like G, G/C (3x2010), G, C, G, D7/f# (200210) w/capo 3rd fret...

John Prine can make three chord songs sound quite pretty, can't he?

Ignoring the capo, that chord is 2 - 0 2 0 - and 2 - 0 2 1 - on the E a d g b e strings. (- means don't play the a or high e string) Beautiful song.
