I almost bought some cube steak today, but I didn't know what to do with it. I thought it would be hard. But i can do this! Confession: I deglaze my pan with chicken bullion, sorry Alton, I don't use chicken stock enough to keep it around. Also, I don't have a dutch oven, so I'd do this in a frying pan and then decant into a casserole to bake.
@nardo218 I make a lot of substitutions when I'm cooking, too. I know stock comes from bones and broth from meat. But when a recipe calls for stock I generally use the store-bought broth. At $0.99 a can, it's most affordable. Fancy wines? Cooking wines will do. Food from a can? Gleaned veggies from the local farmer's market. Cake flour? All-purpose. It's a toss-up between what's cheapest and what's most available. That's what I like about cooking; it allows the innovative cook to improvise.
@XXSUPER17XX as much faith i have in ab i dont think its possible for me or my mom to like liver and onions grandma and my step dad do but they arent aloud to cook it within the house
I love how they managed to get in a Napoleon Dynamite and Lord of the Rings references into the very same scene. Chatting online w/ babes all day indeed!
Still technically a uni-tasker, a can is an object, the shape or contents of the can may be different, but the fact remains that a can is a can is a can. I guess it depends on your philosophy =)
apparently you can use them (can opener) to open those stupid clamshell packaging that everyting comes in now - you know the ones - they defy scisors and end up slicking your hand open when you get frustrated and try to tear them appart...
I think the "uni-tasker" principle has more to do w/ how many different things the tool can work on, as opposed to it just being for a specific things. With a can opener, there are probably thousands of different canned goods. You can open tall cans and short cans, thick and thin cans, it doesn't matter. Not take something like a mango splitter, that's about the epitome of a uni-tasker. There's nothing else it can work on besides mangos.
yeah but no matter what size shape or color the can is it is still just a can ...it cannot open anything but a can. uni-task: it has one soul purpose in its entirety...TO OPEN CANS!
The style of can opener AB uses isn't a unitasker. He uses it a few times in other episodes to do other things such as, opening cans, popping bottle tops, and using the handle as a lever to open twist-top containers that were stuck, as well as jelly jars that he couldn't open normally.
Considering there are "Jar opener" gadgets, the can opener is, indeed, a multi tasker.
I think that it is not just how many different uses you can get out of something. BUT How often you use it! Example: If you are a serious rice eater, than a rice cooker, though a unitasker, is a good investment.
Also note that he rejects the massive, expensive machine that does the same thing. The machine cost only abour 10 bucks and for a device that works very well it does not make itself that much of a space waster in the kitchen.
Righteously put in both remarks. It depends on your philosophy and how essential the uni-tasker is.
I think though, that AB's biggest gripe with some uni-taskers is not only just function, but cost. He doesn't like rice cookers as cooking in a pot is just as easy (function) and the cost is somewhat high (cost). Same with that fine wire mesh strainer in season one--quite costly and the function is easy to duplicate.
Can opener? Hard to duplicate, and the cost is low, not worth an argument. ;)

He says the only uni-tasker he has is a fire extinguisher. What does he use to open cans with? That too is a uni-tasker.
Mombuck 3 years ago
not really, because you would use it to open many different cans, which would be used in many different recipes.

All too often. Truth is, some uni-taskers are just essential in a kitchen.

@xFireHeavenx
Or more simply, you don't open one type of can. You can open cans of nearly anything.
Hardly a uni-tasker.

@xFireHeavenx And hey, some come with bottle openers, so uni-tasker no longer. :P
