Baiul was so far ahead of her time vav artistry and musicalty which were flawless. Artistically she changed her sport in just a couple of years;until her world collapsed into a black hole of grief at the death of Sergei Grinkov. A series of very destructive choices followed which detoured her career downward.
Some people try to diminish Baiul's standing by emphasizing her technical inconsistency esp vav jumping. I say: technic sans passion in art = technic in love-making-OK but not thrilling.
I think it's so annoying that almost every figure skater always does jumps 50 cm. from the barrier... When they have all that space, why do they always do jumps like that?!
@citruzzlove: You use most of the ice surface building up the speed that you need to pull off the jump combo, that's why most jump combinations are not far from the barrier.
This is the first time I've seen this & I don't understand why she was allowed to start from the beginning - especially since she had done two more elements (spiral step and layback spin) before she went to the referee. She is very lucky she was allowed to start from the beginning and landed the combination.
It was Referee Wilhelm's call. I guess he felt that perhaps the jump combo hampered by the lace coming undone (and Baiul just hadn't noticed it yet) who knows?
Watching the replay of the jump combo something seems to go wrong in the lutz-her arms come loose. It's likely the lace was coming undone at that point and it threw her off big time.
@faeryquene - could you or someone else help me out here - wasn't there another Eastern European figure skater at the height of Baiul's career who sort of imitated her, very obviously? I don't remember the girl's name. She was blond and wore heavy eye makeup and had a similar nickname or something. I can't remember much more.
Oksana/Pasha Gritshuk the Olympic champion Ice Dancer-I remember they even did a funny 'fluffy' on it-I think on NBC. It may even be here on youtube. It was during the '98 Olympics I believe. Oksana/Pasha denied that she was 'copying' Baiul, and she even called the 'other' Oksana 'a criminal'. Of course one thing Baiul has never been accused of is being an adulteress-like Gritchuk. ;)
Letting her start from the beginning seems pretty ridiculous to me. It made no sense; she didn't come until several seconds after the combination. She didn't begin to even slip up because of it until those steps, so it's just as likely it came undone there as after the combination. Why did the judges allow it? I'm not claiming favoritism, I just think it's unfair. I wonder if some of the judges disagreed with the decision, and thus gave her lower marks than the second performance did deserved.
I don't know if that's true, she got lower marks because she was a new skater on the scene and the judges tend to hold back on the marks until the skater has been around longer.
However, Oksana didn't have to pay her dues for very long because she was scored generously at Worlds just a few months later. Actually, even in the long program here at Europeans she was scored generously.
Oksana is an inspiration to those young people who are not growing up in a nuclear family and/or growing up in a difficult situation. For a kid who grew up with no dad, and was orphaned at an early age, Oksana is courageous to follow her dreams and not let her disadvantaged background be an obstacle to reaching her goals in life.
yes.... It's a pity that not long after the 1994 olympics she fell in alcohol abuse and general bad behaviours that leftn her in a persistent state of emotional instability....A real inspiration.........
Oh Yes!!! Look at her now... She looks like a ex- soviet whore with a tacky look , hyper-oxygenate hair and a unpolite attitude maybe generate by a prooved drug and alcohol abuse... A real rise above all the adversity...
I don't think so! She started her deviant behavior while she started to make some money. She left Galina Czismeskaia and begin to struggle with everything. After that her jumping ability disappeared (even if I doubt she ever had some) and her private life turned in a disaster. Yagudin, Witt, kulik, Grinkova... They all moved to US and they didn't act like she does.
Well I would think being pushed into the spotlight at such a young age would fuck up anyone. Look at the tennis player Jennifer Capriati and how she went from being a 14 year old tennis star to being a dopehead.
I agree-except like Baiul, Yagudin and also Viktor Petrenko were arrested at least once for drunk driving. Yagudin in August 2003, and Petrenko in January 2004 on suspician of driving under the infuence-both arrests occurred in Conneticut. Oksana made mistakes but she has never been arrested again.
I give you kudos for referring to her as Mr. Ed..'cause in another post I said "A horse is a horse of course" and got bashed by the other posters for saying it...so I called her Bucky Beaver.
WTF why was she allowed to restart the program from before the combonation when she didn't go to the refere right after the combonation? Ridiculous she should have started after all the posing.
Corrupt sport and era. That's why. The judges thought she was too cute and because of her story. Plus she is former soviet and they were so biased and put those from former USSR up during the 90s-2002.
The cut of music was slightly different here than Worlds. I prefer the cut of music from Worlds, but her steps into her 2Flip were much more difficult here.
And I just love to hear the EuroSport commentators (and Sandra B. at Worlds) gush over how fierce she was - they did it during every one of her performances - what an exciting time this must have been for the sport. I wish I could've experienced it at the time, but this will do. :-)
As much as I love Oksana's artistry, I have to say she always takes a long time to setup her jumps. It's the only time she has any stiffness to her at all.
Yeah, telegraphing jumps is slightly unattractive. Carolina Kostner of Italy is a huge telegrapher and so was Irina Slutskya. Skaters who take a second during the lutz are more acceptable because you have to hit that outside edge, but for those who just take five seconds for every jump...it's just annoying.
I'll take a white trash trainwreck over a fake like Nockzema Bymule at least Tonka Hardon landed her jumps on one foot, Nockzema always had one foot up her ass.. and Bonerley -god where is the trampoline she never learned basic forward or backward edging..ANY MORE OPINIONS?

what a difference between a true champion(Oksana), and a horrible representative of the sport, Tonya Harding. She was a horrible skater and person.
And imagine, a little shoelace is enough to show the difference in the quality of their hearts.
The best and the worst.
Oksana is so enchanting.
