Great animation! I was lucky enough to meet Jiri Barta this summer. I studied at Famu, in Prague, and he presented the film there. He also brought along his original puppets, Piper puppet included! I got to talk with Barta and get some photos of him and the puppets. It was great!
Thanks for stopping by! Has he told you about anything that he's been working on recently? I'm just wondering what he's doing - I haven't heard any news about him in years. By the way, would you be willing to share any of your photographs? I'd love to know what he looks like.
Yes, he is working on a new feature length animated film. He's doing it at, of course, the Trnka animation studios in Barrandov. We saw one of the animation studios where an attic set was being constructed. And sure, give me your email address and I'll gladly email you the photos!
That scene at the end and possibly even the whole 30 second clip seems to be generally borrowed from Metropolis. It was a rad clip anyway though and the way it's animated is the fuckin' SHIT!!..
By the way, a DVD of most of Jiri Barta's films (including this one) is now available in North America, R1 NTSC! Highly recommended! Just search "jiri barta" on amazon or ebay and you should come across it - I think it's called "Labyrinth of Darkness"
Indeed, the whole film is great. I love stop-motion animation, and the Czechs were, and are, the masters. Watched a lot of this stuff as a kid, wish it'd be available on DVD.
It IS available on DVD. There are several places - one is chaletfilms.com (I've ordered from them and can recommend them). Also, search "krysar DVD" or "Jiri Barta DVD" on eBay (you may find something) or google (it's also sold on a DVD set of Barta's work). All the DVDs are PAL R2, so make sure your player can play them. Good luck! :)

Uh, I've seen Metropolis, and I don't know what you're talking about. I assume you're talking about the 1927 film?

I've been lucky enough to see it on the big screen, here in Amsterdam. I was blown away by the amazing animation. Must see the full version!
