Originally it was to help stop people from stealing my video without credit, or worse - claiming my original material as their own work. Even so, many people did anyway. Now that I'm a YouTube partner and CMS member, my material is somewhat protected, so my newer vids have virtually invisible watermarks. I wish I could go back and make the old watermarks nearly transparent too, but I'd have to remove and re-upload the vids, and I don't want to lose the view count, external links or history. :-/
I've got hundreds of photos of our beautiful skies & nature I've taken over the years,99% of them are 35mm.Someday I hope to put them together in a montage to share with all.
You could probably make some very cool animated video slideshows with a collection like that... be sure to send me the links if/when you get them uploaded :-)
That's very true - when we actually get up into the clouds where you can touch them, they look much different... and all we can do is capture their images for future memory :-)
last summer the sky was full of very grey clouds but over those clouds the sky was yellowblue-ish? and there was also this jet trail that was like golden because sunshine still hit it. sorry my bad english.
Sometimes the sky can be full of color when the sun is low on the horizon... This is because sunlight is fltered by the natural and artificial gases and particulates in the atmosphere... the more atmosphere the light has to pass through, the more of the shorter wavelengths (blues and viiolets) are lost, leaving only the reds, oranges and yellows we see at sunrise and sunset. The lower the clouds, the more red they usually are :-)
There are a number of freeware apps out there... JPGVideo and PhotoLapse 3 are a couple that I know of. When you compile your images into video, use 30fps for smooth playback. :-)
I write and develop most of my own software and techniques to do my compositing and processing, so I generally don't use much stuff from the Internet. I have tried both of those two programs though, and they do work well.
Yep - 1920x1080p HD - videos can be VERY large. Typical sizes for a 1-minute clip range from 250MB to nearly 1GB, depending on how detailed and complex the video is. It helps to crop your images to the video size before converting them to video, rather than resizing it afterwards. :-)
I write most of my own software and methods to partially automate the process, but there might be some apps out there that will do it automatically. Try searching google. :-)
well... i need 3 comments... ^^' ... you know in life we do not really take the time to really enjoy every second we live... it's only when we are sick that we think about how happy we can be, to be healthy the other days. Your video is 05:50 of pure Enjoyment of living. . . and eyes wide open, possessed... like not wanting this to ends. Thank you for what you bring to us viewers. Convinced SUBSCRIBER 4 sure !
Thanks so much for the great comment(s)! Indeed there are so many amazing and interesting things in our lives, which most people overlook or just take for granted. I've always tried to take the time to pay attention, and have tried to film things in ways which really bring out the auditory and visual delights, which are sometimes even obscured by nature itself. Cheers! :-)
i need 2 comments so the video shock me... in such a good way.... u know like if you search for : fights, death, shooting, ghosts, pain, prank etc... you use to get your mind up to bad things and this close yourself on these bad things and then you are not in peace with your thoughts.... The // is that your video is totally the opposite... Brings calm and peace... gooosh.... i love that.... There should be more people like you posting video on youtube....
Dear jcmegabyte. I would like to thank you for these wonderful moments you share with us. It is for sure a piece of work to do a video like that so : Congrats for the great work and final result ! My favourite part is 00:46 - 01:02 when you can see the red sky and then the waves... wonderful ! Congrats to TECHNICIAN cause it's a great song that brings ears above the clouds. Both music and video makes soul closer to stars and peace...
Most of the time I film in conditions which are safe for the camera, but in cases of extreme sun/heat, rain or other adverse conditions, I often improvise temporary shields/shelfters for the equipment to help keep it from harm. Thanks for watching! :-)
Most of the time I place the camera in my yard where it can't be seen very well, and I frequently place it up on the roof, where access is difficult, so it's fairly safe to leave it out even when I'm not home for a while. As for the weather, I always watch the skies and keep track of the forecast so I know if bad weather is coming. If I expect rain, I'll put the camera under a small shelter to keep it dry, and wind can be handled by using heavy weights on the tripod legs :-)
Each one of the clips you see in this vid took anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours to record. The result is usually only 10 - 30 seconds of time lapse video, but it's well worth the effort :-) Thanks for checking it out!
Thanks for the kind words! :-) I typically shoot 1 frame every 1 - 5 seconds, and always play them back at 30fps, giving a speed-up of 30x - 150x respectively.
At 30fps (which is a video standard), 1 minute of video contains 1800 individual images (30 frames-per-second x 60 seconds = 1800 frames). On a good day, I'll shoot between 2,000 and 10,000 images - sometimes more if conditions are really intersting. Yes, I DO literally wear out cameras and fill up hard drives filming so much! :-)
:o how can people dislike this they must have no life since they dont go outside everyday especially those who play videogames all day grrrrrrr those stupid fat people that have no lives except playing video games all day!!! -_- anyways.....YOUR VIDEOS ARE AMAZING!
Thanks for the great comment! It's always hard to tell what people will like or not like, and why... and it's even harder to please everyone, since our tastes are all so different... But I figure that majority rules, so if most comments are positive then I'm doing a good job :-) I do value constructive criticism, and those few mean comments only make the posters look bad while making the rest of us look better! XD So, it's win-win for the good guys and all is well! =)
Thanks for checking it out! All this footage was filmed in and around Santa Clarita, California, and represents the best clips of about 500 or so taken over the course of 6-8 months :-)
Great video! I just added this to my favorites. I really love making time lapse videos too, and you are one of my biggest inspirations. Thanks so much for your hard work.
Would love to see you do a vid with all extreme close ups of those big billowing clouds. The ones at dusk were awesome. It all was except the subject matter itself. Thanks for your efforts.
I've had a number of requests for a cumulus-specific vid, so I have been accumulating the footage to make one. Still need more shots but I'm working on it! :-) Thanks for visiting and commenting!
Thanks so much for the kind words :-) I'm using Canon S5 and SX10 digital still cameras... In order to capture the stars, I use f2.7, ISO 400, 800 or 1600, and a long shutter time of 8 - 15 seconds. It also helps to have a really dark sky.
A lot of instruments and processing went into this music... Old school equipment includes Roland D10, Vocoder, Alesis Quadra-Synth, Sequential Circuits Split-8, Yamaha FB01, and numerous digital effects and processing software :-)
It was amazing how difficult it was to get good cloud sequences without any trails in them, and I ended up with quite a few in this scenes. Interestingly, even though the planes are still up there and plentiful, we can go for many weeks in the summertime, without any trails at all - just 100% clear blue sky most of the time here in the desert southwest. Unfortuntaley, there aren't any clouds either, so there's nothing at all to film!
Yea, it is.. I initially did that to help stop people from stealing my stuff and claiming it for their own, but now I wish could re-do it, making it smaller and nearly invisible (like my newer stuff) without losing my view count... Oh well... live and learn! :-)
Still an awesome little film though..I really like the almost lenticular saucer shaped clouds near the end. They're all very nice shots and the music is well chilled...good job
Indeed that was a scary-looking formation that day - I was surprised there were tornadoes spawned! You can see the full length version of that clip here: v=QY8X0IxpXFc and most of it in HD at the end of Sky Spy 3. Thanks for stopping by! :-)
I do offer free use of pretty much all of my material, but only for non-profit projects, such as non-commercial YouTube vids and such. The link to the full info FAQ on my website can be found in my channel description. For free use you'll have to snag the clips directly from YT. Enjoy! =)
True, no technology, but just think of all that methane gas from decaying Dino-Poop! XD No wonder the earth was so much hotter then :-) and the headline reads "Excessive eating leads to global warming - a great reason to start your Dino-Diet now before it's too late" Hahahaha I could go on for hours! XD
Seems like it's always one thing or another - either some species expands and exploits it too much, or an asteroid comes along and boogers it all up... Sheesh! XD
For personal/non-profit use, you can just download whatever you like directly from YouTube. There are freeware download helper apps, and you can also snag the videos directly from your internet cache folder after you've watched them (there are instructions for how to do this on my websote). The HD versions of the newer stuff have virtually invisible watermarks, and would probably make nice backgrounds and screen savers, although you would have to convert them to screensavers yourself. :-)
Thanks! This is a collection of footage I shot over a 4-6 month period. I shot WAY more than this, but these are the best sequences. Indeed it does take a ton of time and effort to put these all together and write the music. :-)
I'm not sure exactly how I ran across your channel, but I do a LOT of channel surfing and often subscribe (sort of like an electronic wave and simple "hi") to others with channel themes and interests which are similar to mine when I find them... I've met a lot of great people and seen a lot of amazing things this way :-) By the way, thanks for stopping by and checking this one out!
@0.38 what was the interval you used like 1 photo every 5 seconds for example? I am doing time-lapse for a college project and was wondering what would be best. Great video by the way :)
Thanks for the view and kind words :-) The interval varies with conditions.... I typically shoot at 1fps. I figure it's better to shoot too much rather than not enough. I can always go back and remove every other frame (or two or thre3...) if the action is too slow. The goal is smooth, fluid movement, showing all the motion but not so slow or fast that it's boring or fleeting... Kind of a feel thing. Definitely experiment a lot and see what looks best to you :-)
@jcmegabyte Thank you for the great information! I'll bear this in mind when creating my project :-) One thing I forgot to ask was how did you create it in HD? I use a Canon EOS 400D but I am unsure which setting to use on it- jpeg or raw images? I tried using the lowest quality Jpeg, used QTpro to export it as HD but it made the quality even worse :S I now have 2 time-lapses up now so they will show you what i mean =) Thanks
I shoot all my frames as best quality (fine) JPG files, with a resolution just a little larger than the 1920x1080 frame size I need. Then I crop or scale the fames down to size. Make sure your quality settings are set to max (100%) for all the processes you use. This will result in HUGE files, but that's what it takes to reatain the quality all the way through to the finished video. :-)
A Zen moment production. Just excellent.. I haven't listened to too many of Technician's music but this track alone is worth playing the vid - very nice piece. The wave clouds at :55 were especially good footage. Can I ask which camera is used for this recording?
So glad you enjoyed my music and video - thanks for the kind words :-) I use the same cameras for pretty much all of my day and night HD time lapse sequences. The Canon S5-is and SX10-is are particularly useful becuse of a firmware hack called CHDK which adds HUGE functionality, including intervalometer and motion detection scripts. =)

You wont find a single sky in the US with out chemtrails checkered all over it.

JCMDI.com is a bit distracting
AlexZanda 1 year ago
Yea, it is.. I initially did that to help stop people from stealing my stuff and claiming it for their own, but now I wish could re-do it, making it smaller and nearly invisible (like my newer stuff) without losing my view count... Oh well... live and learn! :-)
jcmegabyte 1 year ago
Still an awesome little film though..I really like the almost lenticular saucer shaped clouds near the end. They're all very nice shots and the music is well chilled...good job

Indeed that was a scary-looking formation that day - I was surprised there were tornadoes spawned! You can see the full length version of that clip here: v=QY8X0IxpXFc and most of it in HD at the end of Sky Spy 3. Thanks for stopping by! :-)

It's a good thing clouds don't really move that fast or else people would probably spend way too much time watching them float around and stuff.
I know I would. I'd never get anything done with my life.
BongaFish 1 year ago
No doubt - I would spend even more time staring at the sky than I already do! XD Thanks for visiting :-)

I do offer free use of pretty much all of my material, but only for non-profit projects, such as non-commercial YouTube vids and such. The link to the full info FAQ on my website can be found in my channel description. For free use you'll have to snag the clips directly from YT. Enjoy! =)

You're right. But I don't think that dinosaurs were a threat to the planet. They were just animals. They didn't have factories and nuclear plants :D.
Fire666Hell 1 year ago
True, no technology, but just think of all that methane gas from decaying Dino-Poop! XD No wonder the earth was so much hotter then :-) and the headline reads "Excessive eating leads to global warming - a great reason to start your Dino-Diet now before it's too late" Hahahaha I could go on for hours! XD

Seems like it's always one thing or another - either some species expands and exploits it too much, or an asteroid comes along and boogers it all up... Sheesh! XD

Is there anywhere i can download some of your footage to use as a screen saver?
if you could comment me on my site to let me know i would appreciate it. Great job.
Malicious1x 1 year ago

Great video by the way :)
gravesey11 1 year ago
Thanks for the view and kind words :-) The interval varies with conditions.... I typically shoot at 1fps. I figure it's better to shoot too much rather than not enough. I can always go back and remove every other frame (or two or thre3...) if the action is too slow. The goal is smooth, fluid movement, showing all the motion but not so slow or fast that it's boring or fleeting... Kind of a feel thing. Definitely experiment a lot and see what looks best to you :-)
jcmegabyte 1 year ago
@jcmegabyte Thank you for the great information! I'll bear this in mind when creating my project :-) One thing I forgot to ask was how did you create it in HD? I use a Canon EOS 400D but I am unsure which setting to use on it- jpeg or raw images? I tried using the lowest quality Jpeg, used QTpro to export it as HD but it made the quality even worse :S I now have 2 time-lapses up now so they will show you what i mean =) Thanks
gravesey11 1 year ago

TacairStationHQ 1 year ago
So glad you enjoyed my music and video - thanks for the kind words :-) I use the same cameras for pretty much all of my day and night HD time lapse sequences. The Canon S5-is and SX10-is are particularly useful becuse of a firmware hack called CHDK which adds HUGE functionality, including intervalometer and motion detection scripts. =)
