You really didn't need to write out the lyrics, because Mathis's every word is crystal clear. He belongs to the old school of pop singers who actually knew how to sing. Imagine that!
arguably among the top three "pop" vocalists of all time, and his beautiful voice remains only slightly darkened over time. it is truly amazing. i did not know he had sung this and it has been a great discovery. those who like this might also wish to audition gary morris' interpretation, which is unique in its own right.
The most beautiful prayer of all prayers to our God. Johnnys version of this is captivating. I have seen Colm Wilkinson live preforming in Oslo, Norway. As Valjean in "Les miserables". Just as captivating.
And billstar01: Valjean is NOT the girls father. Just a friend.
if for some of johnny fans who havent heard this before and think is good or a lovely song which by the way is about a father wishing for his daughter boyfriend to come back from battle ,i love johnny i have had over 30 years with him on and off my mum + dad loved him but please listen to colm wilikson his version is real ,deep and most of all is sung from the stage .
@billstar01 I completely agree with everything you said. I too love Johnny, and have since the 60's, but my God Colm Wilkinson's version of this song is incredible!
Johnny Mathis is timeless. I proposed to my first wife while his album of love songs played "small world" in 1961. There are many great singers but very few whose voice is immediately recognizable for its unique tone. Johnny Mathis is one of those.
This is such a wonderful song. I have heard it sung by Barry Manilow, but this is the first time I have ever heard Johnny sing it. I love this man and his wonderful voice.
@montanablueful I love Johnny to pieces (one of my all time fav singers), but if you haven't heard Colm Wilkinson or John Owen-Jones do it you MUST check them out! You will not be disappointed!!! :-) I believe Colm's most watched video is from the 10th anniversary special. The John Owen-Jones (High Quality) video of him at a concert is better than the one of him in costume. It is truly fantastic. Enjoy! :-)
@theoriginalgoddess ~ I love this song, and Johnny does it really proud! I was also in NYC, and got to hear Colm Wilkinson sing it. There were tears slipping down mens' faces as well as the womens'! What soul is poured out in this song! One of the greatest! God Bless . . . ~Diana Lynn~
so beutitful oh makes me think of soliders in a funral singing this to there freind who died in the war or in the war of irac dont you think so?????? anyone?????
Very much so, BUT the song is actually about praying for those about to go into battle. Which I think is more appropriate. Should be sung at Passing-Out Parades??? Yes, No? YES x
