I recommend anybody who is interested in Japanese underworld culture and the Yakuza to read Tokyo Vice by Jake Aldenstein. It is a very articulately written and informative book.
I'm not quite sure what to think of Yakuza, because I'm not sure how to image them correctly, but I think it would be wrong to compare them to say italian or russian maffia.
@MGSGeneral There are really too many different kinds of yakuza to just lump them all into one. Some yakuza are dangerous, some aren't so much. Some are little better than thugs and some really do try to be the sort of anti-heroes they started out as centuries ago. One main difference is between Tokyo area yakuza and Osaka yakuza; the former are more of a "do what you're told" crime-oriented group whereas the Osaka ones are more independent and seem to look out for others' interests more often.
@Jimaera Thanks for clearing that up. You seem to know quite a bit about them. It's good to know it's not as easy as marking all of them as dangerous criminals up to no good except for their own. I'll keep that in mind
Ur so full of shit asshole

@ser89ers I have no idea, but I speculate that the crime bosses have ties with the police.

Whatever else may be said of the Yakuza, I do like that some of them are decent guys and not just thugs.
