Calgary was so good that two of their three captains were healthy scratches the night they won it all in the Forum (Timmy/Pepper). Calgary is the only non-Montreal based franchise to win the Cup in the Forum. Long live Joey Mullen.
@15MUSICMUSIC Stop looking at the past. Vancouver is looking its best then its done in years. Oh by the way, Oliers came in last for the past 3 years. The only reason Edmonton won anything was because of Gretsky. You suck it.
You probably would have been able to make 2 or 3 more of these Cup montages for Calgary if not for the Hull-Ramage trade in 1988. Flames were able to hold on to most of that great 1989 team for a few years but could never get past 1st round of playoffs after Lanny retired in 1989 and Mullen went to Pens in 1990.
I swear Calgary got ripped off in 04' but who cares they will win again now that Feaster is the GM. He rebuilt Tampa Bay and look where they are now. The eastern conference finals. Hopefully with time Calgary can make it back to the cup and win another cup before I die.
I can not think of another time in my life that I was more content than on this night in 89, Hakan Loob almost wiped out when the cup was handed to him I remember that live, iggy now wears that number 12. I will never forget McDonald's goal.
still chokes me up. Proud to be a long time fan. May not live in the city any more but am an ardent fan still (I was 4 when they played their first game)
A noteworthy fact is that the only playoff series the Flames have won since this Stanley Cup win in 1989 were in 2004 during their improbable run to the Finals. From 1990-1996(they missed in 1992)they choked in the first round, and have lost 4 straight first round series ever since '04.
@MeanGene79 okay, maybe they didn't choke in '96,but they did all those other times.you might recall that Calgary was only 2 seconds away from forcing a Game 5 in Chicago that year before Chris Chelios tied it and then Trent Yawney had coughed up the puck in the 3rd overtime to the Hawks' Joe Murphy to seal their fate.
@rider4343 I totally remember that!!! I live in Ontario(Northern Ontario, that is....) Why oh why didn't they have a video review???? OMG!!! They got robbed!
@ralphyizatioh You've got one here!!! Any Canadian team, man, I'm glad I'm not the only one!!! And to have Winnipeg get an NHL team, I'm in for that too!
What a fucking awesome team this was. It was like an all-star team. McDonald, Fleury, Gilmour, Ramage, Mullen, MacInnis, Niewendyk, Roberts, etc... The NHL is watered down now. Way too many teams & players. I wish it was like it was back then. I say go back to 20 teams at the most. Get rid of those struggling franchises like Nashville, Phoenix, Columbus, etc
I'm a huge Oiler fan but that year belonged to the Flames. They had the Presidents Trophy and really kicked everyones ass. So many great players on that team. Ahhhh the good ole days, when hockey was worth watching.
What a series....and the classy Montreal fans giving Calgary a well deserved standing ovation....maybe the best final ever in terms of two evenly matched teams...
MY HOME CITY and still is!! CALGARY FLAMES ARE AMAZING. most of the time. haha, sucks how they didnt make playoffs this year, been i think 7 years last that we didnt make it in.
@MyWordizBond That was Game 3 of that Finals series and gave the Habs a 2 games to one lead in the series. That would be the last game Montreal took in that series as the Flames won the next 3 and won the Cup 4 games to 2.
I lived in Calgary for three years, in those years I beacame a FLAMES FAN; AND looked up to LANNY, I live in PERU now, and I still shake and cry of excitement when I see the Flames in action. thanx for the video man!, Thanx LAnny for showing us your persistence in persuing your dream, you definetly set an example for me.
Lanny and Theo are still my all time fave Flames heroes. I had a dream last night where Theo was still playing wit Lanny (like in ´88) , his knees were fu&%ed up and spent most of the game on the bench. But in my dream he was playing for a team called The Washington Generals (I know they`re the exhibition basketball team that plays against the Globetrotters) and I was doing the color commentary for the game. Fu&%in great dream, eh ?
Greetings to all Flames fans from this Habs fan. Just to say that it was a heck of a prowess by the Flames, the only road team ever to clinch the Cup on Forum ice. And I was really happy for a class act like Lanny MacDonald, who ended his career with a Cup win. Hopefully another class act, Jarome Iginla, will also get to savor the experience of winning it all.
Thanks for your words of kindness, Infofan. My take is that, even though we have our allegiances to our respective teams, we can savor the sport for its greatness, regardless of the outcome in the end.
Proof positive of that was in Trevor Linden's last game (between Cal. and Van.), which meant nothing, and Iggy got the whole team to shake hands with Linden. And then the Canucks fans giving an ovation to Iggy when he was announced the second star. We need more and more of this! Hats off to class!
@cooldude8265 i know u wrote this a year ago but that is an awsome thing to say i am a tue flames fan and was to young to remeber this but i would love to see iggy win a cup too and lanny is such a great guy i have meet him a few times and he is always in a good mood
@cooldude8265 Thank you so much for such a classy comment, a rarity in YouTube. I watched this game as a 16 year old and it was a heart stopper of a game . I have always had a huge respect for Le Club de hockey Canadien and this Stanley Cup was badly needed in Calgary. However, should Calgary get eliminated this season (man, they'd better not!!!) ...and if the Habs go all the way no doubt I will offer my support to Montreal if they become 'Canada's Team'!!!
@cooldude8265 you are a respectable opponent with a comment like that, good for you rare to find something like that, all the best with the habs this year.
no i hope canucks dont win it this year i want hawks to end there drought of 50 years then let the canadiens bring the cup back where it belongs...in montreal
in my opinion the habs only won the cup 24 times cuz there was only 6 teams in the league when they won the cup i mean compare that to the odds they have nowadays 1/6 and 1/30 i think it was luck that they have 24 cups i mean how many times have they won since there were 30 teams in the league?
As we can all tell, winning the Cup once is an incredible feat. Montreal's success has been not only with talented players and great coaches, but also with shrewd drafting, gifted development, team spirit, and a bit of good luck, etc.
The Red Wings have been the leaders in these fields since the mid '90s, and such teams should be emulated.
The Flames can do it- but must accept that there are a lot of other teams who can do it, too. All 30 teams expect to make the playoffs now...
hey u retard they wont boast it by 10 mil. saku is for sure gone. Montreal is screwed unless your are too fucked to know that. How are u supposed to resign all 10 players? The salary cap wont go up cause of the economy crises.
One thing I don't understand about Oilers, Chunucks and Flames fan is that they hate each other. These 3 teams should be solid and one! because we are Canadians!
you make a good point. But we are rivals, i completely agree with u but as a flames fan i have to hate the oilers and canucks it's just the way things are
... I remember this team very well. I was a Kings fan in 1989, and I thought that the Kings had a very good team -- but the Flames swept their series with the Kings and went on to win it all. It was a truly dominating team.

No other team has ever won the cup in the Forum or in Montreal for that matter. As of late, I notice a lot of players who are near retirement finally get their first championship.
that is true but u can't blame it all on the goalie i mean defence is performing very poorly for the flames this year and kipper gets faced with way too many shots, you gotta give him credit if it was any other goalie like backstrom who is used to not facing many shots his GAA would be like 5, all in all i think the defence of the flames this year deserves to be blamed the most =/
I had a dream last night where Theo was still playing , his knees were fu&%ed up and spent most of the game on the bench. But in my dream he was playing for a team called The Washington Generals (I know they`re the exhibition basketball team that plays against the Globetrotters) and I was doing the color commentary for the game. Fu&%in weird, eh ?
First and foremost, Edmonton fans should shut their trap cause they've put all their money on Souray... who would do that? He is better at Jacking of than playing hockey.
Yeah, I'd be bitter too if my team's glory days were so long past, and the current group of Soilers keep soiling their panties in the clutch.
Face it: despite how bad you wanted to one-up the Flames by winning the Cup in 2005, you lost by 2 goals in Game 7, so you wound up falling shorter than than Calgary did the year before.
Get used to the current dry spell, tho: nobody in his right mind wants to play in Deadmonton, 'The City that Smells Like Feces'.
Sports karma for the Flames red moustached Captain who retired after winning the Cup: Lanny McDonald got the game winner (or at least a huge goal)& finished his career with 500 goals. What a team: Mullen, Roberts, Fleury, Vernon, MacInnis, Nieuwendyk, Loob, Gilmour, Otto, Hrdina, Hunter, McDonald, Suter, McCrimmon, Ramage, etc. They were loaded. Coached by Terry Crisp. Remember MacInnins's slap shot. That was hard as hell. Cool video.
Calgary was so good that two of their three captains were healthy scratches the night they won it all in the Forum (Timmy/Pepper). Calgary is the only non-Montreal based franchise to win the Cup in the Forum. Long live Joey Mullen.

Thanks for your generous compliments, cooldude8265. It was a great series involving two great teams.
I have always admired the Forum fans who gave the Flames that standing ovation...you have that same class.

"He and Theo are still my idols" - snor
I had a dream last night where Theo was still playing , his knees were fu&%ed up and spent most of the game on the bench. But in my dream he was playing for a team called The Washington Generals (I know they`re the exhibition basketball team that plays against the Globetrotters) and I was doing the color commentary for the game. Fu&%in weird, eh ?

Nobody wants to watch hockey clips set to some faggot-ass soundtrack. Throw your computer away and hang yourself.

jayjeremy87; word. But, Tanguay dosn't play for us anymore man.
rmacedo68 3 years ago
First and foremost, Edmonton fans should shut their trap cause they've put all their money on Souray... who would do that? He is better at Jacking of than playing hockey.
second, I love Calgary Go alex tanguay baby!
The Drive for 25 shall continue possos.

one of those goals was an empty netter you idiot
underdog2346 3 years ago

Cool video.

according to my playoff tree, flames beat the rangers for the stanley cup this year. This is not scientific, nor partisan.
Barlo301 3 years ago
Unfortunately, even being a Ranger fan,we are WAAAAAAY too inconsistent to even get to the conference finals...
