You probably would have been able to make 2 or 3 more of these Cup montages for Calgary if not for the Hull-Ramage trade in 1988. Flames were able to hold on to most of that great 1989 team for a few years but could never get past 1st round of playoffs after Lanny retired in 1989 and Mullen went to Pens in 1990.

A noteworthy fact is that the only playoff series the Flames have won since this Stanley Cup win in 1989 were in 2004 during their improbable run to the Finals.From 1990-1996(they missed in 1992)they choked in the first round,and have lost 4 straight first round series ever since '04.

What a fucking awesome team this was. It was like an all-star team. McDonald, Fleury, Gilmour, Ramage, Mullen, MacInnis, Niewendyk, Roberts, etc... The NHL is watered down now. Way too many teams & players. I wish it was like it was back then. I say go back to 20 teams at the most. Get rid of those struggling franchises like Nashville, Phoenix, Columbus, etc

And I was really happy for a class act like Lanny MacDonald, who ended his career with a Cup win. Hopefully another class act, Jarome Iginla, will also get to savor the experience of winning it all.

Proof positive of that was in Trevor Linden's last game (between Cal. and Van.), which meant nothing, and Iggy got the whole team to shake hands with Linden. And then the Canucks fans giving an ovation to Iggy when he was announced the second star. We need more and more of this! Hats off to class!

As we can all tell, winning the Cup once is an incredible feat. Montreal's success has been not only with talented players and great coaches, but also with shrewd drafting, gifted development, team spirit, and a bit of good luck, etc.

The Red Wings have been the leaders in these fields since the mid '90s, and such teams should be emulated.

The Flames can do it- but must accept that there are a lot of other teams who can do it, too. All 30 teams expect to make the playoffs now...
