  • nice place

  • @kazama2881 man shut da fuk up foo

  • i went here

  • The pipe / moustache combo is due a revivial.

  • the world really has a lot of great monuments with great history behind them! even the bad shit like Katrina, Columbine, 9/11 it's all just rich history that me as a person can say i was alive to live through this and have stories to tell my kids now Alcatraz is past my time because i am only 20 years old but just to look at it you know that it has history on the island and around it!

  • Is it true someone escaped from there and actually visited their cell years later as a tourist?

  • @CooperSnow No, no one has ever escaped from Alcatraz and lived to tell about it. One guy washed up on shore across the bay (he would have died had he not been found) and was then sent back. I think he probably did that by jumping off the island when he was on "work detail." There ARE former inmates who were released from prison years ago and went back to Alcatraz as tourists. One was there for his book signing when I was there a week ago. Cool...

  • They should restore Alcatraz as an active prison. I bet the crime rate in America would drastically diminish overnight! LOL The very name "Alcatraz" STILL puts fear into people. I know it does me!

  • @typhon3808 I think too many people know how to escape from there lol

  • @CooperSnow That may be true now, however, the Bureau of Prisons would know how to fix those issues and make it so that it would be virtually impossible to escape. For instance, regular cell searches and tri-monthly rotation of prisoners. Also, NO family members or friends assigned to cells next to eachother. Of course, they would have to do alot of maintenance/repair on the prison before re-opening it as an active facility, but it definitely could be done! LOL

  • I was there just last weekend. I have to say that the place is cool to visit, but there's no fucking way I'd want to be an inmate there. Just the thought of going there would make me change my ways real quick! I don't know how anyone could survive years of being imprisoned there.

  • Id be scared shitless if I was locked up there

  • i just play a level in Tony Hawk Underground

  • I just went there yesterday It was awesome :D

  • anybody that uses a pipe while making a documentary should be respected lol

  • Back when i was living in Alcatraz i use to get raped everyday unless if i offered my meal to big Joe, then hed watch my back. Literally my Back.

Sometimes ol little T would take the beating in the shower instead of me.

    Good times, good times

  • I did the tour on Alcatraz today and it was really scary

  • We need an Alcatraz in Iraq..

  • this was the real life superjail

  • If there was a Zombie Apocalypse, best believe that id protect myself by going to Alcatraz lol jus sayin.

  • @jfcruzzielove because thats the one place old prisiners would go

  • Bring Alcatraz back! Scares the shit outta people!

  • Damn I went there yesterday it was crazy

  • the new Alcatraz = Guantamano bay

  • @Kino483 Not quite.

  • I did the night tour recently--it's those city lights that would've driven me crazy, twinkling and taunting, deceivingly close, beckoning. On New Years Eve, yacht clubs would have parties in the bay and the prisoners would listen to laughter and celebrations all night. I'm surprised more people didn't try to escape, I know I would've.

  • I Want to go there for hollidays...

nice in the hot sun (A)

  • How amazing would it be if Alcatraz were still running today? I wish they wouldn't let it fall apart. I HAVE to go there some day

  • i want to live there :)

  • the commentators during that time had such good voices....they made such documentaries more interesting to watch....

  • Man, when i took a tour around Alcatraz and entered those cells, i felt right at home! Despite the fact that your with a bunch of criminals, I wouldn't mind living there at all.

  • for a sec I thought I was watching The Twilight Zone...

  • I escaped from Alcatraz but then im a fish

I escaped from Alcatraz, but then im a fish!

  • just-ice.

  • I clicked on this video just because I enjoy the sound of Howard Duff's voice. I saw his performance in Kramer vs. Kramer. Starting at around 6:51, was that Robert Mitchum speaking, or was it just Duff speaking in a very low register? I'm guessing it was the latter. :)

  • @Mikerosen1961 OH no. It is Howard Duff.

What is funny, if you listen to the audio closely, you realize that Howard Duff and Alvin Karpis were never in the same room.

  • @iMoviePhil4 Yeah, I just realized that was a dumb question because what would Mitchum be doing there without an introduction? The fact that the two actors sound so uncannily similar at the same time made my question both stupid and valid.

  • Philsmovies.....where did you find this? Awesome!

  • @mulder1021 I found it at Major Video in 1995.

  • What is the name of the state prison right smack in the middle of the Nevada desert near Indian Springs, Frenchman Flats, and Mercury?

(I saw it by using GOOGLE-EARTH when viewing the Nevada Test Site which witnessed nuclear explosions in the 1950's.)

  • 3 guys escaped the prison-it was closed year later.

  • look what the world has come to we need a new alcatraz

  • the worst hoodlum era America had ever known? ah i see this documentary was filmed in 1971, as they're not mentioning the Bush presidency.

  • knock it down... rebild it... put these pos people we have locked up inside the new one... then burn that one down too... at least the pos people back then had respect... these fucks today don't even respect themselfs

  • Back in those days , even the prisoners were of a better quality than the scum that fill our prisons today. Gangbangers and crack dealing pimps are what we have now. Back in the day, an honor system of sorts existed and as mean and cruel as they were, the prisoners treated each other with a modicum of respect. Yep. the days of Frank Morris are gone.

  • they should reopen alcatraz and i dont like the people that said they "had" to close down alcatraz

  • reopen alcatraz!

  • Very interesting documentary!

  • i guess that and the panopticon idea were the models for the prisons in the US! Im disgusted and support the abolition of the prison industrial complex!!! We should work to change this!

  • nice vid

  • watching this just makes me want to go back there .if u havent been its sumthing u have to do before u die

  • so exciting..!! ill visit alcatraz in april...hope im gonna get some cool recordings and pics there to upload later here on you tube... :D

  • i'm from the solomon islands and i've read so much about alcatraz....this documentary is one hell of an interesting one..luv it...

  • brilliant documentry , nice one 4 posting it

  • Wow! This is a VERY rare documentary. Thanks for posting!

  • They said, "No one could escape this very jail!" but you know why they closed it down? Someone escaped!

  • GROBARI ALCATRAZ!

  • Thanks for this I hope it teaches a thing or two

  • Why is it shut down

  • It was closed because it was far more expensive to operate than other prisons (nearly $10 per prisoner per day, as opposed to $3 per prisoner per day at Atlanta), half a century of salt water saturation had severely eroded the buildings, and the bay was being badly polluted by the sewage from the approximately 250 inmates and 60 Bureau of Prisons families on the island.

  • @ilov3nik3s cost to much and the salt water and air is deteriating the walls they would have to rebuild it to use it

  • it cost to much to keep the prisoners there.the cost of delivering water, food ect..

  • Alcatraz prison is amazing ! , the audio tour puts you right in the prison walking down the halls having the voices of people shouting and wolf whistling at you is quite weird. A must see if you ever go there .

  • we need new Alcatraz's in the usa now

  • We have several of them now. They just do not have the same press or the cool name.

  • @PhilsMovies Yeah like Oak park hieghts supermax lol.... they dont fuck about in there.

  • @PhilsMovies

    what are they called?

  • we should put u in there HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

  • @attie3 and u need to be locked up twat

  • @johnfinbarburke damn man whats up with that commet?

  • Now that is funny

  • Im going in like 9 days. sooo excited..

cant wait to see it all

  • Please let us know about!! Lucky you! :-)

  • o ya baby this shit is the video game called the suffering [prison is hell]

  • If it's hell then why are tourist flocking to Alcatraz? It looks like an island paradise.

  • well some ppl need sighs of well if heaven and hell exits

  • i luv Alcatraz history, learning more, know it all, study'en the inmates, my one dream is to go the Alcatraz, and my mom say's her and my dad r going just to pick on me, but all of you who go r lucky, all i do is go to Disney and universle and stuff... :(

  • I just got back from San Francisco and we did the Alcatraz tour and I left that place even more fascinated then I was before I got there.

I'm so glad that you decided to upload this.

  • This is fascinating. Thanks for uploading it Phil!

  • when was this video made? this question is to the video's uploader and anyone who knows the answer thank you :)

  • 1971. Hope this is helpful

  • Is it true that 3 man escaped from there?

  • It was never proven that they made it across the bay. however it was never proven that they didn't either

  • techniacally no. they tried but were executed in the process

  • what about the post card? 6 days later goverment recieved the letter. it said we made it. im just wondering

  • How much guards were there

  • There was a ratio of 1 guard for every 3 inmates.

  • cool....

  • Steel Clink Alcatraz

  • is it true that some prisoners escaped, but they never found their bodies because they thought that great white sharks got them out in the bay?

  • Five men disapeared and were never heard from again while Alcatraz was a Federal Prison.

    Ralph Roe,

    Ted Cole,

    Frank Moris,

    Clarance Anglin

    John Anglin.

Great White sharks could have gotten them once they washed out beyond the Golden Gate, but those sharks don't go into the bay itself. To much fresh water for them.

  • Ha yeah the sharks were more of a rumor than anything else wasn't it?

  • Oh there are sharks in San Francisco Bay. But they are bottom feeders and not man eaters. Of course, the guards did not tell this inmates that. ;)

  • @PhilsMovies

There have been some big whites in that area however

  • 5/5*

  • Thank You! :D

  • You Are Welcome :)

  • i heard that there is a cave under there that these prisoners made to escape is that true

  • No, it is not true. There were myths about Spanish Tunnels on the island but they are not true. The Army did dig a tunnel in the island, but only to get from one place to another, and no inmate ever got into it.

  • they didnt make a cave they made a hole under thier sink

    but alcatraz is sooo cooll

    i went like last summer

  • thanks so much, researching this ,really interested

  • this is a good video

  • awesome. excellent post

  • i bury that in my mind

  • Good Documentary

  • You are most certainly welcome.

  • this is fascinating thank you for putting this up

  • Who would have thought a prison would be so famous lol.

  • jeez imagine being a prisoner

  • Actually it was according to "Doyal," an alcatraz inmate, that being in Alcatraz was not as bad as a lot of people thought. He said there was one person to a cell, no homsexuals around to bother you, and he stressed no one hussled. If i had to go to prison I would rather be in Alcatraz then say San Quenton, where there are gangs and constant stabbings.

  • wow

  • I went to Alcatraz 3 days ago and i didnt think it would be as cool as it was....it was awesome!

  • thanks for the documentary i was and still am interested in alcatraz

  • what a terrible place
