the world really has a lot of great monuments with great history behind them! even the bad shit like Katrina, Columbine, 9/11 it's all just rich history that me as a person can say i was alive to live through this and have stories to tell my kids now Alcatraz is past my time because i am only 20 years old but just to look at it you know that it has history on the island and around it!
@CooperSnow No, no one has ever escaped from Alcatraz and lived to tell about it. One guy washed up on shore across the bay (he would have died had he not been found) and was then sent back. I think he probably did that by jumping off the island when he was on "work detail." There ARE former inmates who were released from prison years ago and went back to Alcatraz as tourists. One was there for his book signing when I was there a week ago. Cool...
They should restore Alcatraz as an active prison. I bet the crime rate in America would drastically diminish overnight! LOL The very name "Alcatraz" STILL puts fear into people. I know it does me!
@CooperSnow That may be true now, however, the Bureau of Prisons would know how to fix those issues and make it so that it would be virtually impossible to escape. For instance, regular cell searches and tri-monthly rotation of prisoners. Also, NO family members or friends assigned to cells next to eachother. Of course, they would have to do alot of maintenance/repair on the prison before re-opening it as an active facility, but it definitely could be done! LOL
I was there just last weekend. I have to say that the place is cool to visit, but there's no fucking way I'd want to be an inmate there. Just the thought of going there would make me change my ways real quick! I don't know how anyone could survive years of being imprisoned there.
I did the night tour recently--it's those city lights that would've driven me crazy, twinkling and taunting, deceivingly close, beckoning. On New Years Eve, yacht clubs would have parties in the bay and the prisoners would listen to laughter and celebrations all night. I'm surprised more people didn't try to escape, I know I would've.
Man, when i took a tour around Alcatraz and entered those cells, i felt right at home! Despite the fact that your with a bunch of criminals, I wouldn't mind living there at all.
I clicked on this video just because I enjoy the sound of Howard Duff's voice. I saw his performance in Kramer vs. Kramer. Starting at around 6:51, was that Robert Mitchum speaking, or was it just Duff speaking in a very low register? I'm guessing it was the latter. :)
@iMoviePhil4 Yeah, I just realized that was a dumb question because what would Mitchum be doing there without an introduction? The fact that the two actors sound so uncannily similar at the same time made my question both stupid and valid.
knock it down... rebild it... put these pos people we have locked up inside the new one... then burn that one down too... at least the pos people back then had respect... these fucks today don't even respect themselfs
Back in those days , even the prisoners were of a better quality than the scum that fill our prisons today. Gangbangers and crack dealing pimps are what we have now. Back in the day, an honor system of sorts existed and as mean and cruel as they were, the prisoners treated each other with a modicum of respect. Yep. the days of Frank Morris are gone.
i guess that and the panopticon idea were the models for the prisons in the US! Im disgusted and support the abolition of the prison industrial complex!!! We should work to change this!
It was closed because it was far more expensive to operate than other prisons (nearly $10 per prisoner per day, as opposed to $3 per prisoner per day at Atlanta), half a century of salt water saturation had severely eroded the buildings, and the bay was being badly polluted by the sewage from the approximately 250 inmates and 60 Bureau of Prisons families on the island.
Alcatraz prison is amazing ! , the audio tour puts you right in the prison walking down the halls having the voices of people shouting and wolf whistling at you is quite weird. A must see if you ever go there .
i luv Alcatraz history, learning more, know it all, study'en the inmates, my one dream is to go the Alcatraz, and my mom say's her and my dad r going just to pick on me, but all of you who go r lucky, all i do is go to Disney and universle and stuff... :(
