Thanks for posting this documentary. It brings back memories, the R.M.P.T.A. were in attendance in case the Chief Constable had called for Military assistance to the Civilian Power. Serving as one of their Chaplains, I was not looking forward to the potential bloodbath that might have resulted. It could possibly have forced Mrs. Thatcher's resignation, due to the high casualty rate, and international outrage!...The Army shoot ringleaders first, and if that fails,... it's a free fire zone!
Interesting video. Also interesting is that it seems that no matter what country one is in, police seem to think that they can do whatever they want, to anyone they want, and never seem to consider if they might be in the wrong. "What? Our policies and presence have caused a riot? Well, we'll just bring in several thousand more police and crush it.".. instead of just backing off, chilling out, and stopping the carnage. Pure ego.
were there alot of white people in the riot? what was the relationship like between whites and blacks during this riot? its sad to see white people as a minority in their own country.
@saraj12 Since when have white people been a minority in their own country? In your rush to racism, you left out the facts. I am glad that the comments have been left open, so that people like you can continue to make comments like this.
@edgehill66 I am not racist. The majority of people in the Brixton videos are black are they not? In fact pretty much all of them are black. It was primarily a black riot. I am not into discrimination. I just asked about the relationship between whites and blacks and whether there was any unity against the authorities. I would help my fellow man out irrespective of race, colour, ethnicity or belief. These videos display the whites as a minority so your argument is completely counter productive.
@saraj12 I realise your comment was made some time ago but... Yes there were white people involved, many of those white people were Irish as Brixton had/has a large Irish community as well as a large Carribean community.
as for someone who lives in the states i applaud them for standing up for the obvious oppression imposed by a police state. In america it goes on all the time, maybe worse for minority groups yes but still across all racial bounderies. Our police are trained,er,brainwashed, into thinking that everyones guilty so lets go after the weakest ones and harass them..i feel bad for the victims that got caught in the middle but you cant pick where it starts, you can only choose a side when it does,RISEUP!
I remember when my friend asked me for help on that day I was huge and fast runner so they wanted me to be in their, as they called it 'Destruction Team' but I said no... and I made right decission. Very thanks for the upload I've seen these buildings damaged and cars burned out on real life and it was just... Shocking
I'm black and actually sympathised and felt sorry for the police as they were cowering behind their useless shields.
I did feel as though black people had to stand up to for themselves but at the same time Brixton needed to be policed, as crime in lambeth was an issue, But police were just doing the job the job they were assigned, it's a shame that most of the officers had an ignorant outlook when doing so.
that's the thing... you had a ignorant / racist element in the police and lambeth (brixton town center ralton road to brixton water lane especially) was a crime hot spot. politics came after the word of mouth and criminal element had their say and influence when it should have come before. It was a disgrace to brixton and the good people living there.
Wow... The similarities of the Brixton riot of 1981, and the Los Angeles Riots of 1992 are striking. Operation Swamp: Operation Hammer. Looters who don't care much about the social cause of the riot: Looters who don't know about Rodney King. The main difference is; while Los Angeles was burning, Daryl Gates told a lot of the policemen of the South Bureau to go home to protect their families while the Metropolitan Policemen fought it out
This is a rue fact, looters have no agenda only their own, they actions hurt any true cause. Sadly quiet often the righteous liberators voices are drowned out by the mindless self concerned few giving the initial oppressors an easy excuse for their prior actions and to claim righteousness. The learning of history is important as any educational recourse.
Right, I understand that looters, or most any criminal, lives for self indulgence, but grownig up during the L.A. Riots, I have noticed that this one is similar in the sense of it's initial cause.
Would you develop your point further as Im hazy on your point of view?
Its easy to be convicted a criminal and its easy be self indulgent but they not the same Mandela, Nally, Biko, Tsvangirai have all been tried as crinimals with the majority convicted, some times law over powers justice.
The initial cause; the spark of both riots, were due to an influx of police presence in a majorly black neighborhood, arresting suspected criminals using a dated law. In 1987 the LAPD started Operation: Hammer. If you were a gang member; you went to jail. The Metro. PD used the "Sus Law" to arrest criminals. Both had catastrophic outcomes and led to community outcry due to alleged racism. I am not defending the rioters, nor do I believe there was a necessity to riot; but the atmosphere in both
Your right I agree very good point, thanks for the insight dnedwrds.
These hard hitting tactics can easily be perceived as racism, something that I have great distain for. In reflection I assume one of the hardest parts of being a Police officer is to protect laws you dont agree with. I suppose they have to remember that the majority elect the law makers.
Topdogfella; thanks! I know it took me a while to make my point clear, but thanks for trying to figure out what I was saying. As for the precieved racism; the fact of the matter is, when you are in a "black neighborhood" you aren't going to arrest any whites, but since the majority of the time it is an economically deprived area; it would appear as if the police are targeting minorities. For some reason you wouldn't catch as much flak as working, say; Beverly Hills...
Ok, i don't really live there, and what happened to the riot marks? I wonder if they will ever have another riot because in the first one, a young woman got raped in her house.
people are all cool. police are still being bred as oppresive mindless robots. and they are everywher.e we are bringing the soul back. dont attack the police. attack the thoughts. somewhere there is a spark of creation. that must be salvaged from the WRECK that we are now living in. in short police are still ACTING as cunts. but damn. they are suffering too. the people who control us need to be conscious saved watever. shame they act so damn annoying. or i might do more to aide them.
@bigwilliec Just so you know mate although you may dislike the police they are people just like you and me. They are the public just like you and me but their duty is to enforce the law and keep people safe from crime but they are hated by a proportion of the population. They deserve respect for going into a job like that knowing that as soon as they put that uniform on they will get abuse from people like yourself.

It's very rare that someone or a group of people actually make me proud to be British. The only reason why black people disapprove of getting stopped and searched is because it prevents them from doing what they want. And this is really the main reason what fuelled the riots. For whatever reason that triggered the riot - is not relevant, because the riot was going to erupt anyway on the basis that black people were prohibited from committing serious crimes in Brixton. This would inevitably conflict with the blacks that didnt like it. So a riot was inevitable.
any who cares about being stopped an searched obvi has something to hide wen ur sons get stabbed u want the police to do something wen there searchin people u riot o well just a bunch of idiots making there shit area even shitter. reply to me properly if u have a gd argument
It's not as straight forward as you might think. When you get stopped & searched on a "weekly basis" by police who have absolute contempt for you, it undermines any good it might have served. The riot sent a clear message to those heads who implement these kinds of ill conceived strategies in our communities. As a result of the riots, Brixton received a degree of proper programmes and financial attention it was due, rather than just more harsh policing.
we're all slaves now so stop the black versus white shit.start searchin depopulation, and realise the good among all colors need to stick together and fight against global slavery.they started in iraq and on the way round the globe as you all watch this old shitand argue about who is better.wake up sheep, and smell the coffee
ilovealex99 go fuck yourself the police got everything they deserve as they were and still are racist's bastards just like yourself, and if you are sticking up for the police then it says something about you and how are us "coon" uncivilised all black people did were sticking up for themselves and their rights as the way the police treated black people were appalling so go fuck yourself you uneducated white piece of shit who's sleeping mummy as you people love keeping it in the family! hahahaha
How the Police treated Black people? You fucking hypocrite. Fire and Ambulance attacked? White family held at knife point and robbed in their own home? Raping? Looting? trashing the community!
I was 15 at the time of the riots. I remember what it was like going into Brixton, Peckham, New Cross. Fucking crime and drugs everywhere.
Old Bill lost it yeah, but don't fucking make out like the Black community were all angels and just standing up for themselves.
so stop and searching black people is good? making us feel like we are worthless is great i don't fucking think so black people fought back for the misery the police had endured to us black people i don't condone the looting and the raping that went on that night but the police had it coming as they thought that we were just gonna take it being humiliated on street for fuck all
Fucks sake, if the place wasn't full of drugs and street crime then the Old Bill wouldn't have had an excuse to sus everyone. They didn't treat white youths any better in them days. I had my share of beatings and run ins with the Met in the 80's. They were out of control. Don't put a colour on it because it ain't true. There was a big black community in Brix and thats why it was focused there. Fuck me it was black youths doing the taxing
Yes. I guess it is a cyberspace reflection of a real life riot. In the real world, there is a small minority who feel the injustice, they are at the epicentre of the riot. Then there are the hardcore anarchists who are bent on destruction. Lastly, the so-called idiots. Ignorant bystanders, who make sweeping statements from the sidelines without any understanding of what they are talking about.
i remeber the riot very well indeed i was in it LOL, me an 2 others from my school went down from streatham hill to try a get a vhs vid player each . one m8 got nicked, me an my other m8 got away all we ended up with was some fruit an drinks from a sweet shop LOL,
Hear that, theicha? That's the voice of disenfranchised youth, expressing its dissatisfaction with the institutional racism of the status quo via, erm, petty theft.
As has been said on the video and as The Icha said, people came to Brixton from the surrounding area to take advantage and profiteer from the situation.
Firstly try to find out if this guy is telling the truth. Then find out (as you have been so concerned) whether he is white or black. I have a feeling you will find he is the former.
i used to live in Brixton on Coldharbour lane early 80's mate and yeah it was dangerous. but you gotta understand the old bill were all racists and provoked a lot of this situation. So I got no sympathy for the old bill, but for innocent people caught up in this it was fucked up.
About as civilised as the racist police who went out just to target, harass, beat-up and frame any black person they could find. Yes, very civilised policing.
I go to that church, its wierd that its different

The only reason why black people disapprove of getting stopped and searched is because it prevents them from doing what they want. And this is really the main reason what fuelled the riots. For whatever reason that triggered the riot - is not relevant, because the riot was going to erupt anyway on the basis that black people were prohibited from committing serious crimes in Brixton. This would inevitably conflict with the blacks that didnt like it. So a riot was inevitable.

I hope you are a better train spotter, than you are at analysing why the Brixton riots took place.

@theicha ''weekly basis'' ??? erm i think u mean daily basis

we're all slaves now so stop the black versus white shit.start searchin depopulation, and realise the good among all colors need to stick together and fight against global slavery.they started in iraq and on the way round the globe as you all watch this old shitand argue about who is better.wake up sheep, and smell the coffee

You are half right.
Aim 1) Divide them.
Aim 2) Destroy national identity.
Mass immigration does both usually. Racists help with Aim 1 and Aim 2 is done naturally.

sinerita 3 years ago
How the Police treated Black people? You fucking hypocrite. Fire and Ambulance attacked? White family held at knife point and robbed in their own home? Raping? Looting? trashing the community!
I was 15 at the time of the riots. I remember what it was like going into Brixton, Peckham, New Cross. Fucking crime and drugs everywhere.
Old Bill lost it yeah, but don't fucking make out like the Black community were all angels and just standing up for themselves.
It ain't true!
FILTH4146 3 years ago 2
so stop and searching black people is good? making us feel like we are worthless is great i don't fucking think so black people fought back for the misery the police had endured to us black people i don't condone the looting and the raping that went on that night but the police had it coming as they thought that we were just gonna take it being humiliated on street for fuck all
sinerita 3 years ago

The rioters were nothing more than criminals.

Triplesod 3 years ago
i used to live in Brixton on Coldharbour lane early 80's mate and yeah it was dangerous. but you gotta understand the old bill were all racists and provoked a lot of this situation. So I got no sympathy for the old bill, but for innocent people caught up in this it was fucked up.

About as civilised as the racist police who went out just to target, harass, beat-up and frame any black person they could find. Yes, very civilised policing.
