  • north atlanta's marching band attepmts this we come pretti close

  • the conductor must feel like he has magic powers :) great warm up looks fun! i wish my band did that :P

  • They just set their instruments on the gravel? O_o

  • ...and who was that who said brass sucks?? thats wat i thought

  • Holy shit. That was amazing. On every level. Flawless.

  • Orgasm.

  • that was amazing

  • I just got chills and a tear ran down my cheek.

  • wow...50 was the most amazing chord i have ever heard

  • Everyone complaining about the lead player hanging over, have you ever heard of Maynard Furgeson?

  • O_O Is this the matrix? (Kidding course) Gotta love watchin DCI bands

  • @SirChelsea86 You should wash your mouth out with soap! "DCI bands"?!? These groups are not bands my friend, they are Drum and Bugle Corps... As an alumni of one of DCI's finalist corps i take offence to that. =P

  • What key do they play in, like what scale is their main one... like F maj?

  • I hate sops that hang over, er trumpets...

  • SHAT!!!! :59 to the end is BEAUTIMOUS!!!

    favorite chord @ 1:05!!! what chord is that there??? F# 7/Gb 7?

  • wow !

  • SOMEBODY PLEASE tell me what there playin at :16 so cool...

  • the ending just make me wanna grab a trumpet and join in

  • no not star wars...close encounters of the third kind...

  • I was in the lot for this... It was amazing

  • lol star wars

  • the distortion of sound makes it sound very spacey! this is really cool!!!

  • and im not talking about the chords, im talking about the sound quality of the video! it adds this wierd effect to it, its really cool! its like so crappy its good sorta.

  • so they know who's breathing

  • Anyone tell me why they bend their knees?

  • to signal that theyre up in the high register ;]

  • fuuuuuck....

  • DAMN!!

  • I'm not gonna lie...that was pretty sweet.

  • I cant believe I heard a trumpet hang over on that concert B flat! I bet he got his ass wooped! LOL

  • Nah, They do that just to be a show off. but you gotta think, if you were playing a note that high do you think you could cut it off with out it being held over? It takes hella air to play a note like that, much harder to stop the air.

  • i think there called screamers its where they are allowed to hang over a little.

  • not a mistake :P if you listen to other recordings it's always there ;)

  • A good example of what conducting a group like that compared to your average high school band is driving a Toyota Camry (HS) or driving a Lambo (BD).

  • shotgun progression 00:17....my band does all thease warmups :D

  • whats the name of the exercise that stars at :43 and ends at pretty much the end

  • This should be space chord progression

  • ya its space chords...or part of it. better recordings of it elsewhere. on here. somewhere

  • hey look its spiderman counducting lmao

  • God those marching euphoniums are monsters! They're freaking huge!

  • Muhahaha!- Hells yeah they are

  • anyone know the name of the exercise from 0:16 to 0:23? and does anyone know some good brands of trumpets that are good for marching?

  • sounds just like a chord progression to me?

    blue devils march dynasty

crown at the end of every season sells some of their yamaha xenos...

phantom uses king if im right?

    try it all out.

  • i dont know about trumpets... but I have a yamaha xeno tenor trombone (not for marching...) and I love it!

  • kings or yahmmaha are amazing for marching band

  • shotgun progression amazing.....

  • that's just the way Dynasty horns sound, they sound different then King or Yamaha. And if you know anything about the tick system and the history of drum corps judging you'd understand why the leads hang releases.

  • dude its going to be bright its a higher register c note dumbass you cant be big and full sounding on a note like that damn

  • the cut off is terrible .... some trumpet held over with an awful bright tone.

  • BD screamers are allowed to hang over a bit (or alot).

  • Not to me....It's totally fine because it's a good tone. It's the same for jazz bands. Same concept

  • if you think bright is good.... then sure but i love dark sounds... which is why i love crown's tone

  • Show me a dark sounding double C.

And listen to Crown's trumpets- they are still bright, just as an ensemble. Trumpets are MADE that way. Dark isn't always good.

  • this isnt music, this is organized noise

  • which makes me very happy

  • they may be just whole notes, and maybe really loud, but everyone there is playing with a quality sound and are truly making music. this progression tells a story, if you really listen.

  • Can anyone transcribe the progression from 0:58 on? I can't figure it out.

  • The two chords they repeat there right after :58 are a flat 6, flat 7- so Gbmaj, Abmaj, probably with some added ninths and whatnot.

  • Comment removed

  • this is beautiful if anybody has the music can u email it to please

  • ive got the sheet music for for the 0:16-0:23

  • I would love it!

  • fuck yah

  • yea that would be sweet

  • I would like please

  • yea please send me one

  • yes please!!! and any other brass warm up stuff you got under the DCI quality

  • yeah let me get it for space chords

  • holy hell. epic.

  • too bad the sound is compressed so much. that is the most amazing sound to hear live! I want to die while in the arc! (what a way to go eh)?

  • Haha! Right on. I'm sure many of us corps vets will be rolling around the lot in wheelchairs content to die in that fashion.

  • Totally agree :D

  • whats that moving line that they play at :55?

  • the main theme from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" by John Williams.

  • that was amazing man dude that was cool i like the last part when it was goin left to right man 10/10

  • if anyone wants the trumpet part {high}

    for the 0:16-0:23

    0 1 0 1 0<----double g!

  • anybody know the notes for the space chords, and have th music that they could send me?

  • take your hand and slap your piano ta da you got a space chord!

  • ROFLMAO! Dam that made my day!

i think he means the part after

that not the actual space chords.

if he doesnt well maybe he should

check out some literature on the topic.

  • I love space cords

  • RAWR but beautifully

  • omg im in the pit of my band but west broward has the warm up at the begininng

  • that was awesome

  • the blue devils rox haha i lov this warm up my hs band does it thh the time they r really goog its spring-ford golden ram marching band

  • love the Blue Devils.

  • 1:08 to 1:16 is fucking scary. The conductor also looks like he is summoning a fucking demon or something. Those space chords are amazing.

  • I just nutted in my pants.

  • the conductor is feelin it, aint he?

    i fux wit him!

  • The guy conducting must be ITB.

AEA - Kappa Kappa Psi forever!

    ...and you know this, man!

    I'm not a businessman. I'm a business, man!

  • damn that was awesome!!!

  • I would do terrible things to be a part of that group.

  • I just had an orgasm in my ear. :]

  • are the contras playing the mars bass line at about 0:50?

  • Yepper!

  • @randomnoise Close encounters of the third kind

  • @randomnoise what did i tell you about yeppers..... lolol

  • Hehe I still can't get over the double C at the end...and I've seen this video at least 2,000 times....

  • This is probably one if my favorite DCI videos ever. sure it isn't complete warmups or best vid, but it has a stunning appeal, especially when the camera drops down at the end.

  • Nothing drum corps do is simple. They just make it look simple to fool people like you.

    Blue Devils wtfpwns you.

  • don't let this video fool you. You need to hear space chords live and in technicolor to really understand how amazing it is.

  • I use that warmup too.

    It really is useful.

  • That warm up they use in the very beginning is quite useful to get warmed up. I actually use it quite often.

  • Wow, That's so amazingg

  • That Is SOOO Coool. OMG This Is One Of The Reasons Why I Have Been Playing For The Last 10 Years... I Love It! OMG!

  • Haha The conducter did spider man hands . =p. Just curious, When I play in marching band, Why are mello's so importent? the ones in my band Suck balls, there just playing the alto sax part, just shittyer, Why do we need them?

  • if you've ever heard a good mello player, you wouldn't ask that, trust me. It has one of the clearest and beautiful sounds ever. Also, its right there in between baritone and trumpet, its the instrument of that pitch, simply put

  • Mellos are like an alto in a choir. The trumpets provide soprano, Baritones are the tenors and contras are the basses. It's like a 4 part chorus SATB

  • Mellos are only there for the trumpet players who don't want to get cut.

    Haha just kidding, just kidding....

Ever wonder why chords sound so good? Scale degree 3! There's always the mellos and other alto instruments for that. Think of it as a sandwich. Without the stuff inside, it's just bread. You gotta have more than just soprano and bass. What's the point of a bread sandwich?

  • Hey, I like bread sandwiches! :D

  • Haha yeah I had one just a few hours ago today XD

  • NOT BREAD SANDWICHES! At least put like...mustard or something....

  • So....in other words the mellos are the altos, like I said....

  • UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH DAM that was nice

  • The warm up in the beginning is not hard.

It was so easy I found it out by ear.

  • It's not meant to be hard. It's meant to warm them up before they play the hard stuff. I just thought that was obvious with the word warm-up

  • If it was so easy and you found it by ear, prove it. Post the warm-up *written out* on this page

  • I'm not trying to be an a-hole or anything, but the Close Encounters of the third Kind part is kinda easy, and it's not too difficult to find a note in the chords there by ear...

Written with every part listed and correct? No. Could I write out the 3rd kind part out, and give you a good idea what chords are there? Probably.

Even so, warm ups are not meant to be hard, and the BD's just make theirs sound INCREDIBLE.

  • W-wow... @_@

  • my mouthe was open the whole time i have that warm up the fast one in the begining the whole thing is hard

  • the standard size for a contra is 4/4 (yamaha/king) while dynasty (what bd uses) makes the 5/4 for the A corps (as seen above)

  • at 20 theres 2 people who look like theyre taking a crap

  • u try playing that high proper stance....

  • lol

  • wow...

  • I love the double C at the end. The icing on the cake.

  • omgz, I <3 THE BLUE DEVILS. A-FRIEKEN-MAZING

  • SO PRETTY!!! i wanna touch! i love them all i really do!

  • are you fucking kidding me?

  • Maybe it doesnt take too much skill to play badly, but to play any instrument well, it takes skill.

  • man iam stupid

i didnt know those contras were oversized

    which is 5/4

most high schools that play contras play at full sized which is 4/4

  • actually those tubas are 5/4 tubas

    i have seen them myself

  • Why do they squaT?

  • they are pushing a LOT of air. it's kind of a mental thing that helps them push the air easier. some corps only allow it during certain parts of the show, and some don't allow it at all. its mostly a style thing.

  • what kind of tubas are those????

  • those would be contrabass bugles

  • hey, i play one of those contra's, and i'm only a sophmore in highschool lol. they're so nice and give amazing sound.

  • that's awesome, i wish our school had contras. i march sousaphone, it kinda sounds like crap... haha i hope to march dci one day though

  • we had sousas like 1 month before a competetion, then we got contras, so we only had 1 month with them before we could get them ready. we acually got to handling them pretty well.

  • Contras are better, but require more skill to play it and make it sound good, which is why most of the smaller high schools have sousas instead.

  • yeah, i think all high schools should have them. cuz now sousa's suck lol.

  • Haha I hate the way sousaphones look, no offense to Sousa, but it's just kinda queer looking. Maybe that's only because contra's look so sexy, but yeah.

  • i used to play sousaphone i don't like the way you said that.

  • They're called baritones

  • those "are Contra's" not baritones

  • Ahh gotta love that space chord.

  • how do they play the part at 1:08...

    that's awesome

  • Each part is given a note, and they can play any note with in a fifth of the given note. So if it's a C then anywhere from a G above to an F below. Add that pretty much every player is playing a different note..

  • haha that's great!!!

  • Go Mr.Bently and PCMB!

  • OH MY GOD THAT WAS SO AMAZING.

    that sounds so fucking good.

    <3 low brass forever

  • dont diss the fat guy pikachu24 he writes the music for our band for a couple of years and has done a fantastic job and comes out to help us with it at our school

  • John Meheen is a feaking beast O YA.... He writes music for my band to but he doesn't get that exited when he warms up us :(

  • shotgun!

  • Haha, I like the Close Encounters bit.

  • HELL.YES. That's what I'm talking about!!! I wish some woodwinds would do something like that...(without all the damn squeaking, of course).

  • oh shit they did space chords.

  • wow... gotta love the uninformed. Space chords isn't about tuning, and they really aren't chords..they are pick a note and are used for balance. if you stick out on pick a note...it's easy. Having played in this line i'll tell you that's what it's for. As for all the other stuff that goes on, they are just arpegios and some other stuff just to give that section a chance to warm up their ears. All the other stuff...playing loud, and bending the knees...is for warming up the ego!!!!

  • Well, seems the Devils did it again! 12th world championship! W00T!

  • I believe the Blue Devils showed up to my high school for a performance this year.

  • Very intresting chord.

  • Why do they bend their legs and practically squat when they are doing the space chords? Is it so they won't pass out from locking knees?

  • Its an impractical way to force more air volume through your horn...it works, though...lol

  • go baritones!! chyeaa :D

  • what type of chord is that exactly?

  • MAN I I gotta try for a corp one day lol tubas are the crap WOOT.

  • Hah...good luck

  • how.....the fuck.....does this warm them up??? and dont give me bs about intonation...its fucking space chords...

  • Hence the other chords that require intonation. Also, it is nice to have your chops ready, and just about any playing can do it, this is just one really cool way. I wish we did warmups like this.

  • It isn't about tuning. This is mostly for the people watching, it's a bit of a show in itself. As far as warm up is concerned, you are seeing a minute and a half of a 30-45 min warm up, and probably near the end of it. It isn't so much a warm up as much as it is a check to see if you're warmed up, if that makes sense. If you can tune and balance some space chords, you can probably tune and balance most other things aw well.
