  • Compact Disc was in fact developed by Sony and Philips, not Panasonic (Matsushita). First CD players were Sony and Philips and Sony also introduced the first portable CD player D-5 in 1985. A great video though, thanks!

  • @antunkatona Thanks for the correction, I appreciate it. :)

  • a blackman who loves minidisk

  • Yes another point also was the fact that any file transfered to the older mini discs like Net MD players you could not transfer the files back to the PC. The only way possible was through the input jack on the PC and play back in real time. What a total waste of money and time.

  • I agree: it was definitely a stupid move to limit file transfers with the Net MD models. It make sense with the older models simply because at the time they came out, no one had thought of pc's being able to hold music yet.

As far as being a waste of money and time... eh... it depended on your outlook and patience. I don't regret using it at the time, and when Hi-MD later came out I pretty much got most of what I wanted. But it was too little, too late for the market by then.

  • Hi man. I am just starting to record on minidisc. I want to make a backup copy of my C90 cassettes. Can I extend the usual 80-minute discs to record 90 minutes? Cheers Sean

  • I miss minidisc =/

  • There's loads of minidisc player/recorder bargains knocking about on ebay

  • right... so you promised to follow this up - still waiting.... (btw good rant and not just because I am all on your side - but the relaxed mode certainly helped; one question though - is the baby alright??)

  • fuck that shit it's all about DAT tapes

  • I have always hated Cds.

  • CDs where the best thing (soundquality wise) until Hi-MD in 2004 and PCM recordings. 1411 kbps. so really, now, there is nothing better than MD!

  • Good vid! Had a minidisc player many years ago. Loved it.

  • Thank's for the video! You have a good relaxed way of putting your thoughts accross, I've found it really helpful.

  • reading it off the comp.lol cats

  • Actually, it's me looking at the video footage being recorded on my computer to make sure it was recording ok. But great job thinking that the location of my eyes is more important than paying attention to what's being said.

  • Minidiscs rock! nothing is better than them...I can tell because Ive had discmans, walkmans, minidiscs and mp3 players.

The sound quality is absolutely superb and it lasts for ages.

My mom gave me one 4 years ago and I am still using it!

    cheers!

  • Nice video, Been loving my minidisc player for years and just upgraded to an RH1. Very, Very stylish with some cool new features.

  • Yeah the RH1 looks like a sweet machine. I'm really hoping that one day I'll be able to afford one while there is still a chance to get one.

  • Yeah, I'm hoping that minidisc makes a comeback also, though with Sony dropping it's support the way they did, the future isn't bright. Still, people to this day still use cassettes, and there are walkman for them, so you never know.

As far as working with computers... basically anything you record with a minidisc recorder is accessed through Sony's program Sonicstage. It will convert your track into a .wav for later manipulation with another program like Audacity, or Acid Pro.

  • Good vid. I use mini discs a lot.

    Sean,Wales.

  • I use both mini disc and ipod but for different things. The ipod is good when i am cycling because it is so light and i don't have to stop to change discs. I use the MD for mixdown from multitrack and for swapping musical ideas with other musicians. The sound quality is definitely far superior to mp3.

  • @jazzzdude Hey mate...could you please tell me how i transfer my mini disc multitrack masters to a pc ? I have apx 30 full discs of my own music ...and am so frustrated at not being able to transfer over to pc! ...ARGH!!! , please help!

  • Great video. I invested in a Sony Minidisc deck & portable unit back in '97, and still use it from time to time. I still like the recordable feature that MD's possess, but I need to see if there's any way to use my old MDs for MP3 files (etc.).

    Thanks for the 411

  • i Just ordered my first minidisc player yesterday! the Sony MZ-RH1. It looks really sexy and should be good for audio recording. i will probably use it for listening to mp3s, i agree with you i like the idea of little discs that are durable.

  • Congratz on getting the RH1! Ever since I heard about that model I wanted to get my hands on it, and hopefully when I have money again, I'll be able to do so. I'm still happy with my 2 NH1's, but just in case they go kaput, it would be nice to have a ready replacement. Plus, I just like the way it looks, and the extra features they threw in.

  • definitly interested in learning more about md's!

  • so with mini disc can u just drag n drop stuff on it using USB ???

  • Well put.

Keep flying the flag. For anyone in the know, Minidisc is by far the best and most versatile format.

    Jimma.

  • Which are the new models? it is still manufactured? 2008

  • Sorry!! I don´t know, you must ask Sony. I hope coming soon new models in the shops. Best regards for you

  • Interesting... I have some Minidisc player/recorder, but just in metallic blue. That is if you held up a [NET MD MZ-N707 TYPE-R]

    Katalyzt

  • Actually, the one I showed is an MZ-NH1, one of the early flagship Hi-MD models that came out. It's a nice, sleek metal player that has a lot of features, and can take a decent amount of abuse, though I don't advice banging it up too much. Too much will break it, as would any other well made device, and besides, why would you want to dent up the metal exterior? :P

  • Indeed

  • I am glad becouse you have some Minidiscrecorders. Best regards for you

  • Hello Swordsage!! I have some Minidiscrecorders. I put they in my Videopage. I record the music from the satelitradio and with microphon. I am a fan from this recorders. Best regards for you! Have a look

  • I took a look, and checked out some of your vids. Nice stuff. It's cool to meet other Minidisc fans. :)

  • Thanks for watching my movies. There are only very few MD-recorderfans. Good luck for you

  • They're ok devices. I had a couple but I decided to get an MP3 player (first a couple SanDisks and now the Samsung T-10). I'm not sure I heard you correctly, but did you say they have better audio quality?

My stuff was rather outdated which is why I moved on to MP3s for more space. Sooner or later I believe digital media players will have hundreds of gigs and a lossless filetype will replace the MP3.

  • well, they have the potential to have better audio quality, but it depends on what compression you are setting the music files to. I can record music at sound quality equal to (or sometimes better than) a cd, or I can have my recordings at radio transmission quality. Obviously, the higher the quality, the more space it's going to take up.

Digital players are the way of the future. I'd just rather stick with minidisc simply because of its durability and versatility. *shrugs*

  • *snorts and shakes head* you and your mini discs ... I still like my MP3... no having to buy new discs.. :p
