You're right - she was brainwashed into being a psychopath - but seeing how far she's come from that point in her life and being shown that she can revert back to her programming at any time and either go for The Doctor's throat or destroy all of reality by way of a paradox makes her fascinating. She's the only companion in Who history to be a genuine threat to The Doctor.
Romana is the only companion who would make the Dr a good wife. The others would be okay but they wouldn't live as long as the dr. And the current river song makes me want to vomit. She is disgusting. She is obnoxious. she is a pain in the butt. Her defenders are pathetic. They obviously like women who remind them of dear old mum. Steve Moffat is an idiot. Most of his female characters sound the same. Romana was strong, intelligent and she was a whole Time Lady. River needs to go hide somewhere.
@friedasmith I politely disagree. Steven Moffat's episodes are the only ones that have suspense and River Song makes an excellent companion. Plus, no one said she was his wife.
@friedasmith I like steven moffats work a lot, and while i hate river song (Yes, break the entire universe and refuse to let the doctor fix it. nice going -_-) and amy (i don't have time to list all the ways, but i DESPISE her >_<), he also wrote sally sparrow (brave, tough, clever and endearing, never becoming annoying. everything rose failed to be), and i liked his take on madam de pompadour. and i actually liked river song when she first appeared: she's not inherently bad, but she's overused.
@psychicllamakiller While I personally like River, being the only companion to simultaneously present a mystery, a love interest and a genuine threat for The Doctor, I agree that she's been overused. In the Sixth Series of the reboot she was central to the ongoing mystery, so I can forgive that she appears almost constantly. However, even though I love River, I'll concede that from a story telling perspective there was virtually no point to having her in the Fifth Series.
@JimmyColls IN FACT, having Amy and Rory's friend Mel as the third companion in the Fifth Series in place of River would have made the reveal in the Sixth a lot more meaningful.
