Everyone comments on Sterling and his dizzying, unhuman spins/turns..but Ms. Pat Cleveland is no slouch herself in the spinning department. She just twirls effortlessly, again and again and again, playing with the hem of her skirt, can-can style...what a couple they made: beauty, strength, grace, and Chief Acolytes at The Alter of Dance..and Larry Levan working the music and Ms Jones performing live...what a clip of DIVINE FABULOUSNESS...thanks for posting Mr. Perich...
but her first single was i need a man in 1975 on deca records followed
by thats the trouble and sorry. in 1976 on beam junction. then the portfolio lp was released in 1977 which had what i did for love and La Vie En Rose.
by the time grace did this show she had 5 hits from the portfolio lp and the whole fame lp in 1978. do or die and fame being the biggist hits.
Sorry/ That's The Trouble was released on Beam Junction label 12", and it was available on the market when it was released, and made it up the dance charts on Billboard faster than you could say "Can Grace sing!"
The trouble is to days kids have no class or creativity especially in America.Just don't know how to have fun. This was time the Blacks ,Whites and gays where coiming together. Now don't think racism didn't exists because it did. When they saw that Black women showing her tits, some whites didn't like blacks showing the sexuality.During the Disco time Black artist got alot of work and the rock and roll world didn't like it. @gud11man I've been saying the same thing for yrs now. The closest thing to a documentary I've seen was one of those E True Hollywood type stories. It was poorly done without much of a time-line or many interviews. The movie was not very good, imo, because they didn't have the rights to impersonate the most important and flamboyant characters from that era (Halston, Liza, Liz, Truman, Calvin Klein, etc). These days even kids seem near obsessed with late 70s-mid 80s popular culture.
Fiorucci was there! OMG. To be in that crowd! Oh I would've loved it! And that was the real Grace Jones. She might have been lip syncing but I've seen pictures of that performance in the 54 photo book.

we got into 54 once(tried three times)..i guess we weren't beautiful enough...am glad we spent most of our time at the Garage..this is definately Grace..we had seen her in Philly at a special party at the Second Story(Catacombs was downstairs)She appeared and performed I Need A Man TOPLESS carried in by eight beautiful guys....half of us didn't know who she was/the rest didn't care..we all fell in love with her that night...Does anyone remember the giant penis that would shoot confetti !!!

this is definitely Studio 54's infamous VIP area (where sex was rampant and drugs were passed around like candy). Today, it's "Upstairs at Studio 54" and a lot nicer, too. Yes, that's Larry Levan on the turntables, on one of his nights off from the Paradise Garage.
Ela irradiou uma alegria e vibracao contagiantes, alem de brindar aos presentes com um desempenho cenico despojado e competente.Realmente uma grande estrela.
Is that Larry Levan on the turntables? Probably. Steve Rubell says after Graces playback: "Ok Larry we´re ready ....party" then the DJ just slams in Disco inferno. Legendary!
I´ve heard the contrary. But you´re probably right. There´s a lot of myths surronding Larry Levan. It would have been sweet though if it was him djn at a Grace Jones extravaganza at 54. Almost perfect.
Truly an era gone bye I had the pleasure of getting into and parting in Studio 54 on my
18th birthday in July 1978 and throughout the summer of 1978. My favorite NYC disco was Studio 54, My favorite Germany disco was Dorian Gray and my favorite Parisan disco was Le Palace.
Grace or not, I love the dancefloor action @ 16:30. "My Love Is Free" has everyone twirling (especially the queen in the overalls), letting loose and feeling good. The power of music (and an illegal substance or two)!
People - we're arguing over whether this is 54or not. What I hope people realize is that this is NOT Grace Jones. Who the hell cares where it was shot! She was a huge superstar in 1978 and would not take the stage without a microphone (like "she" does here) until about 8 seconds into the song and then jump into a dancefloor full of drag queens while the song is going. Way too many people posting here who have no clue. Grace would never let her boobs fall out like that either. Oh goodness.
Sorry this is Grace Jones... at that time she was not such a big star like you think ... she was a model who start to sing and wanted to become famous... anyway that time was fantastic ...
Huh? You're obviously a clown based upon your hollow response. I'll give you another chance to post something meaningful. Let's see what you have.
I disagree with funkazoid but at least it was a coherent response. I'm sure you can do better. If you need to write your response in Crayon, I understand.
Grace Jones has never been ashamed of her body. She has been photographed nude many times most recently this year for Dazed and Confused. You obviously don't know anything about her if you think she is shy about exposing her breasts!
IT actually IS Grace and she was EVERYWHERE backthen. "That's The Trouble" was her first single so she wasn't BIG back then.
FYI - she SELDOM bothered to lipscych, opting to dance or walk around the crowd. Egads man... too many of us were there at Studio, Xenon, Les Mouche, New York New York and even that opening night at Funhouse where she kept us waiting 5 hours to perform!
As for her boobs she once showed them to a crowd outside of Kamali on Madison Ave. What are you talking about?
this is not studio 54! i was there in 79. For Grace Jones, we can't be sure, the video is so bad... But for St Jacques, i used to see him at Studio 78 (Champs Elysées, Paris)& i couldn't forget him... I'll be in NYC on next winter and i'ld like to find a good disco dancefloor again (i never came back since). I'm sure you have that in your City, could you tell me where... Thanks from Marseille (south France)
terrible. Now discos are worst. It seams like a motel full of crazy people behaving as animals. Not even animal behave like humans now :S What a terrible time we are living now.
...Was at Studio 54 in the 70's. Those archs in the background.....not a part of the architecture in the old theature that the club was built from. But it is Grace. She NEVER really needed the mike. She lip-sync'd to all "live" performances and videos.Clearly Pat Clevland & Sterling also. Thought I caught Candi Darling
I agree..... I was at 54 during the late 70s.. Not he Famous 54 Building. Nor do I ever remember anyone seating down. Also not what I remember ppl being dressed as or shall I say not wild enough...

This sure in the hell doesn't look like Studio 54. First of all anytime a big name act would perform (and Grace Jones was considered big name at the time) they would go up on the stage with the man on the moon in the back ground.Of all the pics I have seen of Grace Jones performing at studio 54 she's been on the stage. Plus the people look so blah. It's hard for me to believe that they would let some of the people that I see past the front doors.
Partying with celebrities is not all it's crack up to be.years ago at a club in meat packing district NY Cher grooved with bodyguards and her crew were(very)quite rude knocking anyone over that didn't even come close enough to touch..I was one of them even though great memories of Nells, limelight, etc..
EXCUSE YOU DiscofishingGOOBER!!!!! what makes you think I wasn't??? The only MORON in here your yourself. I know where I have been.. But we can tell where your going.. BURN. I don;t mean Disco Inferno Either.
OK, it's offical: Just about everyone who has posted to this is a moron. I really mean this. For God's sake let examine what is before our eyes. Obviously this is not Grace Jones. Grace Jones was one of the biggest stars of this era. Do you really think she jumped on stage without a microphone (initially) and allowed her boobs to randomly pop out?
*** QUESTION*** Do you really think DISCO will ever die? So many clubs these days still turn the great disco songs on at lease once a week. As a DJ from the 70s/80s all my 45s and 12"single I feel are priceless to me now. Money can't buy the memorys back like Music can.
dallaspolo, you are all over this song - good for you. However, you claim to be an expert and you are missing a key fact - this is not Grace Jones and you were never at 54 - stop it.
Studio 54 WAS in NYC, I was in New York and the tour guide stopped at the former club and its now a Ballet School - good news though - THE 54 log's are still on the doors..
By the way.. this is not studio...I was at the Grace Jones party new years eve...she was great...this is not the studio crowd either...but it tells of the times!

hi chilly thank's alot and yes it can get a little nerve wrecking thinking about it lol..and like i said we have way too many records to look through so we do get tired looking and give up''but now im sure we will find it thank's a lot your a sweetheart ciao
hi louis found my record of jungle people so no need for you to look for the link any more but thank's..but if you can get the name of that other song by candi station..cause we still have like over a thousand 45 rpm's and around 600 12inch disco single's from the 70's till the 90's and a lot of newer one's as well. so it makes it hard for us to find what we want or is it cause im not 20 any more?
hello again me and my sister sat and thought about the name of that song it's called jungle people by soulful dynamic from 1976 great record..glad we still have our's some where in a box but ill find it thank's again
hi thanks for replying but it seems like that's not the song? im talking about the last song on the video please if any info please let me know you have no idea what that song means to me thank you
well my sister say's it dont look like studio 54 any way my sister would also like to know who was the last group singing jungle people happy people any info thank a lot..
hi do any of you know the song the come's on by candi station she sings since he made you comimmit the first mistake i want to dominate? i know its her but dont remember the title of the song? can any one help?..i loved these years they were great!
Oh my god i was only 6 then .. but im happy to see that they knew how to party even then .. for me the top was in the 90 when people went nuts just like in the video ... now everything is so tame and no action .. i do like when people just get out of theyr head to enjoy themself !!!
This was not Studio 54 it was LE Farfel in Time Square. Studio 54 would not let this crowd in . The clothing hair all tackie even for 1978.Also the worst DJ anywhere.
fiorucci and xenon and studio 54/even danceteria etc ruled the world in new york till early 80's- people are too b usy and concerned now to have this kind of fun that seemingly never ended. we lived it.

this was not at studio 54--xenon (or new york, new york), and i think i was there that night (17!!) what a time machine--makes me want to cry!! btw, that is pat cleveland dancing with sterling st. jacques--not a drag queen, danced with both, and potassa as well quite a few times!
Oh god no...there will never be another experience as 54 (or Xenon). The drugs, the sex, the incredible music, the sound system, the stars mingling /w the trash mingling /w the elite mingling /w the artists. It could only exist in the 70's/early 80's.
Example: My senior prom night: 3:00am @ Xenon an ordinary Monday night - Rick James mouthing the words to You and I - Pele kicking a football with his son(???), & since my date decided to sit down, I danced with Cheryl Tiegs.
I believe in you, and agree with the magic of this era. But now, with other "cast", another places, we can have great fun. In Rio, for example, Gisele came last week and gave a wonderful party in Baronetti, a famous night club in Ipanema... In every era we have special places with special people. The magic happens when you are one of them.
I can understand what you say - There are always places where combinations of great fun and celebrity exist however - if you were ever at 54 during its heyday (I was 15 years old and THERE when it opened), Nothing compares - not Heaven, Queen, Roxy... blah blah blah. Perhaps you just had to be there to understand.
Aye me, what I wouldn't give to have been around back then. My only slight gripe with this movie (which is VERY slight because this is absolutely fantastic) is that it seems the people dancing are very aware of the camera (especially the drag queen at the very end whose top keeps falling down) so their dancing might be a bit affected. Other than that though it was a total pleasure to view!
This is the best footage from 54 I ever saw! I missed that night, but was a regular. I loved Potassa. She was always on the dance floor without her top. Haven't seen her in almost 30 years. She was Salvador Dali's fav model. She caused a sensation on the runway for a minute. And she was on the cover of Interview. Had a cameo in Joey Heathertons Happy Hooker flick! Great Flashback!
Studio 54 was as fun as everyone says it was when the music was good. Usually the music s*cked because they played all this Top 40 Disco instead of the rEaL FuNk.
Perich...

this is definitely Studio 54's infamous VIP area (where sex was rampant and drugs were passed around like candy). Today, it's "Upstairs at Studio 54" and a lot nicer, too. Yes, that's Larry Levan on the turntables, on one of his nights off from the Paradise Garage.

Oh Lord. Larry is playin an insane edit of "My love Is Free" with Double Exposure and the crowd is levetating!
Werngren64 3 years ago
Is that Larry Levan on the turntables? Probably. Steve Rubell says after Graces playback: "Ok Larry we´re ready ....party" then the DJ just slams in Disco inferno. Legendary!
Werngren64 3 years ago
As far as I know Larry Levan never djed at the Studio 54, although Steve Rubell asked him on more than one occasion.
DrEclectico 3 years ago
I´ve heard the contrary. But you´re probably right. There´s a lot of myths surronding Larry Levan. It would have been sweet though if it was him djn at a Grace Jones extravaganza at 54. Almost perfect.

why was this video made in black and white? It is of very poor quality! too bad cause i love Grace jones.

Truly an era gone bye I had the pleasure of getting into and parting in Studio 54 on my
18th birthday in July 1978 and throughout the summer of 1978. My favorite NYC disco was Studio 54, My favorite Germany disco was Dorian Gray and my favorite Parisan disco was Le Palace.
blkcop10 3 years ago

Discofishinggoober 3 years ago

86am 3 years ago

Thanks from Marseille (south France)

...Was at Studio 54 in the 70's.

It's hard for me to believe that they would let some of the people that I see past the front doors.

dallaspolo 3 years ago
OK, it's offical: Just about everyone who has posted to this is a moron. I really mean this. For God's sake let examine what is before our eyes. Obviously this is not Grace Jones. Grace Jones was one of the biggest stars of this era. Do you really think she jumped on stage without a microphone (initially) and allowed her boobs to randomly pop out?
Discofishinggoober 3 years ago
*** QUESTION*** Do you really think DISCO will ever die? So many clubs these days still turn the great disco songs on at lease once a week. As a DJ from the 70s/80s all my 45s and 12"single I feel are priceless to me now. Money can't buy the memorys back like Music can.
dallaspolo 3 years ago 2
dallaspolo, you are all over this song - good for you. However, you claim to be an expert and you are missing a key fact - this is not Grace Jones and you were never at 54 - stop it.

Studio 54 became a legendary place. But now, in a different way, the things are the same...
andrerio73 4 years ago
Oh god no...there will never be another experience as 54 (or Xenon). The drugs, the sex, the incredible music, the sound system, the stars mingling /w the trash mingling /w the elite mingling /w the artists. It could only exist in the 70's/early 80's.
Example: My senior prom night: 3:00am @ Xenon an ordinary Monday night - Rick James mouthing the words to You and I - Pele kicking a football with his son(???), & since my date decided to sit down, I danced with Cheryl Tiegs.
johncatba 4 years ago
I believe in you, and agree with the magic of this era. But now, with other "cast", another places, we can have great fun. In Rio, for example, Gisele came last week and gave a wonderful party in Baronetti, a famous night club in Ipanema... In every era we have special places with special people. The magic happens when you are one of them.
andrerio73 4 years ago
I can understand what you say - There are always places where combinations of great fun and celebrity exist however - if you were ever at 54 during its heyday (I was 15 years old and THERE when it opened), Nothing compares - not Heaven, Queen, Roxy... blah blah blah. Perhaps you just had to be there to understand.
johncatba 4 years ago
Maybe... But believe me, today´s a great era too
