@STRONTAGO Fans of Rory Gallagher are angry that they've come across a real guitar master (Blackmore), and a soul the size of Peter Green. Gallagher is the Irish version of Ted Nugent.
@cuninglinguist I believe you're correct... I'm fairly certain that Rod Evans and Nick Simper departed the band completely by July/August of '69, after the release (in the US) of the third, eponymously titled LP, and playing a few final shows as part of the Mark 1 line-up.
Ritchie Blackmore one of the first rock wizards on guitar. -- Do you have a piece of his guitar any where? ---Ouch! ...Do you know what I mean <------
@Edellakavija yes, comparing musicians is pure bullshit it makes no sense at all...RB was into classical and hard rock while JP was into the blues and some many different guitar styles...
It wasn't stolen. He lost it to his first wife in their divorce. Her name was Inga or Gretchen I believe. She's german. Back then thats all Ritchie cared about was germany and german women with big tits. He always scored.
The reason Ritchie went to playing Strats was because his 335 got stolen and since that guitar was his baby, he never wanted to replace it with another.
We are talking about a guitar player who felt he was cheating with a Gibson E335, and to switch to a Fender Strat. If I had this footage available to my Randy Rhodes/Yngwie Malmsteen fans in the mid 80's, I would've won the argument I already knew. Yet I didn't get "feel" until I heard Peter Green. That's ok, EC, Page, Beck, and the rest don't get it either.
Wow! Blackmore was fucking bad ass for 1969. Fret sweeping like that was waay after that time lol the church must have hated that guy lol. Right freaking awesome. This performance blew me away! Blackmore is a legend!
What about that Ritchie sweeping his ass off in 1969? at least 15 years before Malmsteen got famous for doing it? What about the fusion jazz licks? almost 20 years before Frank Gambale?
It is obvious that Ritchie already started sweeping before Yngwie experienced his first encounter with the guitar. And Django Reinhardt already swept before Ritchie's first encounter with the guitar.
In 40 years that I've been following Deep Purple I've never seen Ritchie play as tight and fast as on this track. I don't think he's ever excelled himself beyong this break-neck speed precision. Absolutely amazing..., can hardly believe my eyes..., his fingers move as fast as the flutter of a butterfly's wings!
@thomasjeeh Most likely the Gibson straight into a Marshal (if he used Marshals back then) cranked up very loud. On the concerto for group and orchestra album, he said that he used a small Vox amplifier.
most people say that Richie is one horrible and annoying person, actor on stage, egocentric freak...you can hate him but he is just king of kings master of masters god of gods...Hendrix and Clapton started the whole thing...Master Blackman give it pure magic and cosmic touch of one simple six string instrument called guitar...absolute ruler Tirane and dictator self proclaimed god Richie Blackmore
OMG whatta great music....why the hell I wasn't born before gaga and lilly and all of hat nowdays crap ,that tops the charts and polutes the speakers of my stereo...

seventiesclassic.. It's just that word "Better" that you keep using... don't you understand that music is not a competition? The anger is merely brought about by frustration, that's all. Page did some unbelievable music as did Blackmore, only Page wasn't the technical gymnast that Blackmore was. What about Page's solo on Since I've been lovin you?
Hi Guys ... please, let's speak about music only. Us keep on calm. My best Regards to All and that the great Purple Friend Ronnie Dio rests in peace. We Rock !
@seventiesclassic, Not only are you a deaf fucking idiot... you're a patronizing fucking idiot also. I make an intelligent observation of your comment and you come back with stuff like a 10 year old would. If you're a guitar player you must be a fucking hack if you can't tell that both Blackmore and Page are both incredible players in their own right! And that music is not an Olympic sport... it's fucking ART DICKHEAD!!
I am trippin' out on the sweep picking Ritchie did here! I don't think I have ever seen him do that before. Also, this is the best soloing I have ever seen by him. Wow!!! This is awesome stuff!
Before Van Halen,Schenker,Malmsteen, before the fusion greats of the '70's and '80's...there was Ritchie Blackmore. Look at the early sweep technique at 3:15. Truth is, quite often, someone probably did it before and we're just now seeing it. That's why we all need to learn from history...
@seventiesclassic, That is an outrageous comment, Page and Blackmore are two entirely different players with two entirely different approaches. You can't tell me that Page's playing didn't have its own color, the perfect color that is, for Zeppelin! When people bother to actually compare players of this calibre it makes me wonder if they have ever understood or appreciated either player.
I just noticed what you said...Page and Blackmore are 2 entirely different players...really?...and there was me thinking they one and the same person...shucks....another myth destroyed.
Page was great in the begging, but then at 1973... It went all falling down... Because of heroin... I blame him for taking it, but blame the heroin for ruining his skills, but he seriously had skill before the heroin-use. Ritchie was more classical and jazz trained, while Jimmy was more folk and spanish trained, but both were influenced by that rockabilly and the blues... Too bad his spanish training went to the trash after that heroin-use... Only the early outtakes showed it.

This is called "Exposition" from The Book of Taleesyn album. From the Rod Evans, Nicky Simper period. They probably hadn't written any of the In Rock tunes yet. The Jon Lord classical compostion/album "Live with the London Philharmonic" 1969 was the first Deep Purple LP to feature Ian Gilian and Roger Glover. In Rock followed in 1970.
That would be Deep Purple MKII: Ian Paice, Jon Lord , Ritchie Blackmore, Roger Glover (new bass) and Ian Gillan new vocals). Some hate em, I love ALL the DP incarnations....Stil I think I love the MKI config the best; they were the first inkling (to me) of what real hard rock or metal could be. Got to think back on the other crap that was going down back in 66-67 when these guys landed!
@kingofthedeep MK II (mark 2) just refers to this being the second lineup. MK I (the original lineup) had Simper on bass and Evans on vocals. Story goes.. Blackmoore kicked them out and got GIllan and Glover to join.
Is this available anywhere? Gotta be a DVD of this whole show SOMEwhere I can wear out!!
And yes, Ian Paice made this band work, with all respect to the others; I love Palmer, Bruford, and Peart, but the madness of the constant improvisation would have had them pulling their hair out. Paice just said, "Just SEE if you can leave me behind!"
The 335 was discarded because it was too hard to keep in tune; I think the neck was prone to warping. (I think I read that in a Guitar Player interview with Ritchie a LONG time ago!!)
Blackmore invented sweep-picking in rock music. Go to 3:13 - 3:25 and you will see who everyone is copying from nowadays. Simply the best: Ritchie Blackmore
Bahahahaha! Invented? HAHAHAH! Sweep picking? Listen to one particular performance by King Cat Cole performing Nature Boy, look at the guitarist, he sweeps, and hell even before there was sweep picking...
no this is simply deep purple! astonishing musicians which could play anything with their own style...ian paice and blackmore impress me so much in this video...genius!
in my opinion this is ...HARD ROCK ..of the finnest ...this is not jazz or blues,it maybe sounds like that in couple of moments but that´s just because of briliant musicans,it´s called improvisation guys...that´s what some people can not understand ...LOL
This isn't jazz as well as ELP, Yes and Dream Theater aren't jazz, they are Progressive. This sounds like a speeded up blues-rock in my opinion. You know, DP are always cited with Zeppelin and Sabbath because of its MKII work, after the release of Machine Head, they never played again songs before In Rock, great songs btw, to me "Deep Purple 1969" is a very underrated album.
What can I say? Grew up with them, worshipped them all (Mk2), still do! Probably the best band in the world (with a few exceptions maybe!) doing things in the 60's and 70's that others would try to emulate badly in the 80's and 90's. Richie you are the reason I picked up the guitar, love your tone and above all your technique. I only wished you'd come off the bloody medieval trip and play decent rock music again. Come on you moody bugger!
The Group With The Most Talented Musicians, The First True Heavy Metal Band, The Last to leave pure true rock on this earth, Led Zeppelin???? HAHAHAHAHAHAH Deep Purple was the Very best.
You're totally right. DP has never got the cred they deserve. Led Zep is allways spoken of as the first heavy rock band. theyre nothing but a bluesband.
of course man c'mon DP had the best C'mon Zep wish they had Lord and Pace and c'monnnn!!!! Don't even dare to compare the Maestro Blackmore to Page!!!! guitarists shouldn't be compared theay are all great but c'mon thats Ritchie Blackmore. Lord???? c'mon Paul Johnes doesn't have a chance, at least Wakeman or Emerson. Pace would have competition with Bonham and Gillan can hit higher notes than Plant. :)
Oh. Fuck. Look at mister Ian Paice right hand's grip at 07:30. I never seen before he uses that "classic" grip ever. I thought he is only march grip guy :). AMAZING.

in my opinion this is ...HARD ROCK ..of the finnest ...this is not jazz or blues,it maybe sounds like that in couple of moments but that´s just because of briliant musicans,it´s called improvisation guys...that´s what some people can not understand ...LOL
DenWUtang 2 years ago
This is not hard rock or heavy metal!
This is jazz, Bach and Rock and roll played really hard and fast.
It has more to do with ELP, Yes and things like that, than with Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath.
An influence to bands like Dream Theater rather than Metallica.
rodrigitotube 2 years ago
This isn't jazz as well as ELP, Yes and Dream Theater aren't jazz, they are Progressive. This sounds like a speeded up blues-rock in my opinion. You know, DP are always cited with Zeppelin and Sabbath because of its MKII work, after the release of Machine Head, they never played again songs before In Rock, great songs btw, to me "Deep Purple 1969" is a very underrated album.

Great video! Mr Ritchie on a Gibbo.... Fingers, you sound just like me.... maybe we could form a band!!
MrVertical73 2 years ago
What can I say? Grew up with them, worshipped them all (Mk2), still do! Probably the best band in the world (with a few exceptions maybe!) doing things in the 60's and 70's that others would try to emulate badly in the 80's and 90's. Richie you are the reason I picked up the guitar, love your tone and above all your technique. I only wished you'd come off the bloody medieval trip and play decent rock music again. Come on you moody bugger!

The Best ,The Firs,t The Last, Deep Purple!!!

DP owns them(teenager talk)

of course man c'mon DP had the best C'mon Zep wish they had Lord and Pace and c'monnnn!!!!

AMAZING.
wheelosopher 2 years ago
MaTched grip vs traditional grip. Not marched. For example, Buddy Rich's always use traditional grip as I know.
