How old were you when you went to America with £300? That's really interesting... You don't give your age on your channel so I couldn't work it out... 25/26 maybe?
I'd be interested to hear more about that story...
well i would agree with 99% of that. Seeing people kissing in the street can be nice, as long as there's no tongs. I find it strange that a nation such as the USA are even debating an NHS system. I cant imagine life without it. The USA is a poorer place without an NHS.
I have been wondering why you (Geffel) and I have a almost identical view on things. Is it maybe becouse we bouth are european? Maybe.
There are bennefits of being more Social Democraic. I hope the americans come to see it someday. I mean that you dont have National Health Care already is just plain inefficient, and may I say evil? That you dont care about the people around you? I wouldent want to live in country like that.
when it comes to the Us, the GOP went so far right they can't be considered conservative anymore, and the democrats are the new conservatives - there hasn't been a god lib party since bill clinton.
i feel that such views are rather laughable and most europeans, in my opinion, would agree with me. there are countries on our continent that can call themselves conservative, but in no way represent what it means to be "european"; romania, serbia, croatia, bosnia, belarus, russia, greece and turkey.
Could it be because if we leave people without adequate support... we'll be collecting frozen bodies off the streets all winter?
It's pretty funny to think we actually spend less on health care; you guys (and us Finns) are at 9% of GDP... and the current US healthcare system is costing them over 15%, Per capita numbers are even worse.
Yes your right Tetsu, without adequate support everything is perhaps meaningless in the long run. But I dont see why putting more GDP in it would solve anything, it should be more effort in making the percentage more effective. If even that is possible?
But 9% is low even for nations as small as ours. We should increase it here as well. But alas, thats not likly here in Sweden when the current party is right-winged....
Your analysis of politics was interesting and reminded me somewhat of George Lakoff's Moral Politics - an interesting read - probably kinder to conservatives than your pen portrait was.
You sounded rather Aneurin Bevan in your comments on conservatives - I am sure some of your best friends are conservatives LOL
Ni Bevan - what a great compliment! I think my politics has always about what's 'moral'. So what if my version doesn't fit in with standard notions of liberal vs conservative? It's a personal interpretation of course.
I really don't spend any time with people I consider to be 'conservative' otherwise my teeth start to hurt...
Well sadly "conservative as a religious imperative" seems now to be the norm in the USA so yes being anymore than making your excuses and leaving is probably best.
I always believed from my forays to the USA that you can live such separate lives - never really meeting people beyond those you chose to. What do you think?
What makes you think that people who benefit from the public option will go to work once they are healthy? Some might, but others might not. There is moral hazard issue you know. Why not choose to get sick and stay in a hospital where the state provides you with clean sheets and good food?
Tax break? Talk about cultural differences...I'd feel like a complete dick demanding what basically amounts to a reward for something I've willingly given away; just doesn't seem charitable to me.

That would be telling.
I have been thinking about telling the story of my first night in LA - twas a long and memorable one.

Well I for one, would certainly like to hear it.

Is this a satire?

I bet you're American.
geffel 2 years ago
yes I am. Your video just confused me, thats all. I am also kinda blond, so please dont be mad or offended.
Christiannemarie 2 years ago
It's not satire - it's just some very compressed versions of things I think. 11 minutes is not long to discuss these topics in any depth.
cheers!
geffel 2 years ago
ok. Thank you for clearing that up for me =)

This much rationality just couldn't be in a video, and yet..

Mythification - there are other benefits to living here, but if you are living from pay cheque to pay cheque it pretty much sucks bottom.

If US health care is not reformed the projected cost is set to rise to 20 per cent of GDP.
That's how greedy the corporations are.

82abhilash 2 years ago
Of course. That's what all people will do. You're quite right.
Just as people do in all the other countries that have better health care than the USA and nationalised health care systems.
It's called empirical evidence.
Get fucking real.

That's right - if I were to take a load of old broken crap down to the Goodwill centre I would get tax relief for charitable donations.
On the larger scale super wealthy make donations to charities purely to get tax breaks.
geffel 2 years ago
So, "what's in it for me" type thinking then? How.... charitable.

Exactly my point - that's the difference between conservatives and liberals.
