One thing I remember about Ali was that when he could see that a man was out, he did NOT keep flailing away. Someone will probably come back at me on that one, but at least Mercer aknowledged that he got in too many blows at the end. A brutal knockout!

Lyle was leading on the scorecards and Ali did not look that good, he turned it around with the one-two, and when he saw that Lyle couldn't respond anymore but had enough time to keep on hitting him, he stopped and asked the referee to come. That is a hughe risk Ali took, but it showed his class. Same with what he did to Foreman, Quarry, Wepner and many more

I've watched many fights, Tommy had the tools to be a successful fighter way beyond what he was. The problem for him was he couldn't take a punch. Had he been able to, he probably would have went farther. As for dodge jobs, Mayweather is dodging Pacqiao like the plague and Lewis dodged Tyson until he was no longer a threat. Tyson would have smoked Lewis in his prime.
shame neither one of these fighters really went far with their careers after this. Mercer did a little better because he was able to take a better punch, but we never saw the best that these two guys had to offer

Well! Who would be offended by that? I disagree. What else can I say. It's easy for us to sit here typing in the dark, usually with one hand (if you know what I mean), and say we know all about it. But most of us have never even put on the gloves. I have, and I am even a pretty big, strong guy, but I would never want to be a pro fighter. It's just more than I can handle. To talk about these guys like they are "not that great" etc, is just uninformed puffery. Enjoy the fights.

I was there watching this fight and age 16 I could tell that Morrison was the better fighter as he one every round easily; however, he let his gaurd down for one second and Mercer took advantage. Mercer was shocked that he won and was ver excited to win as you could tell in the anouncer interview. I do recall Mercer getting warned time and again for putting his hands on the back of Morrisons neck.
If he was, as you say, the "better fighter", he would have won and not lost.
History books have no time for nuances, incidentals and belly aching. When you get knocked out and BEATEN, it doesn't matter how many rounds you won prior to that. It all goes out the window. Done and dusted.
The fact is Morrison got the fuck knocked out of him big time.

Moorer fight vs Big George fixed..? Really? How so? I think, personally that Mercer took the dive against Holmes after this fight with Tommy. There was more revenue and more interest in a Holmes Holyfield fight.
At least Morrison had the nerve to face Mercer. Bowe avoided him, Lewis barely escaped him, and Holyfield had trouble against him too.
Morrison did have the jaw of a poet, but man his left hook concerned the Bowe camp and he always had that punchers chance.

No reason why an experienced former champion like Big George couldn't cut the ring off and get Tommy outta there. Morrison was a shame. He came so close, but just could not make it in the big time. Are there better, Yes, but don't deny this guy the praise he deserves. He gave it a go and put people on their asses.

Wwhen Morrison woke up he asked his corner why Mercer didn't have his gloves on. Corner replyed to Morrison that the fight was over and that he had been ko'ed..
Morrison was good 48-3 even though he didn't beat the best he was one of the best.

Tommy was doing ok but then he started to do mistakes:
- first one was around 0:46 when he started to get tagged into the corner if you look, he was a bit stunned from Ray's overhand right
- he did not fully recover, and then got a body blow which knocked the wind out of him, and then at 0:51 ray hit him again on the head
but I think the real mistake was at 0:44 when Ray connected for the first time right to the temple, that dazed Tommy...
he should have waited a bit longer...

Well! Who would be offended by that? I disagree. What else can I say. It's easy for us to sit here typing in the dark, usually with one hand (if you know what I mean), and say we know all about it. But most of us have never even put on the gloves. I have, and I am even a pretty big, strong guy, but I would never want to be a pro fighter. It's just more than I can handle. To talk about these guys like they are "not that great" etc, is just uninformed puffery. Enjoy the fights.

I was there watching this fight and age 16 I could tell that Morrison was the better fighter as he one every round easily; however, he let his gaurd down for one second and Mercer took advantage. Mercer was shocked that he won and was ver excited to win as you could tell in the anouncer interview. I do recall Mercer getting warned time and again for putting his hands on the back of Morrisons neck.

History books have no time for nuances, incidentals and belly aching. When you get knocked out and BEATEN, it doesn't matter how many rounds you won prior to that. It all goes out the window. Done and dusted.
The fact is Morrison got the fuck knocked out of him big time.

Moorer fight vs Big George fixed..? Really? How so? I think, personally that Mercer took the dive against Holmes after this fight with Tommy. There was more revenue and more interest in a Holmes Holyfield fight.
At least Morrison had the nerve to face Mercer. Bowe avoided him, Lewis barely escaped him, and Holyfield had trouble against him too.
Morrison did have the jaw of a poet, but man his left hook concerned the Bowe camp and he always had that punchers chance.

No reason why an experienced former champion like Big George couldn't cut the ring off and get Tommy outta there. Morrison was a shame. He came so close, but just could not make it in the big time. I honestly wish him well. We'll never know what could've been. He was just coming into his own after the Ruddock win too. Though Ruddock was done by then, it was a big win for Tommy.

i watched this fight live with my dad when i was ten years old. my dad was a morrison fan he thought he was the next "great white hope".to this day ive never seen a man hit with so many consecutive bombs in my life. alot of ppl critcized the referee on the stoppage, but it happened so fast i dont think there was much else he could have done..ray was right he could have ben killed or seriously hurt here.
