Amazing work. My boys saw this on the dvd that came with their magic set and wanted to know more. Fantasma has a wonderful collection to educate young and old on magic.
SO many people hating. People on Youtube who hate him, but those who knew him or saw him do anything know it was magic. He was an artist. Remember that when he did this, what he did was fresh and not imitated so poorly by other magicians like his techniques are today.
It's good that Slydini brings his left hand down below the table . . . everytime he makes the switch! The he keeps adding the same sleight over & over and this is called AMAZING?
The eye of the camera is not the eye of the spectatorin real time manipulation of attention. We has to go beyond "myth" and call it as we see it (pun intended). This effect is not for youtube/tv/video, as everything done as a misdirection falls flat into "obvious" redirection. Sorry folks, but it needs to stay cabaret!
this might be entirely coinsidental but I noticed that every time he makes a ball disapear there is a smal interval in the video, almost at the same time, every time :P I know he's a brilliant magician, but it just seems odd... there are no other "intervals" like that anywhere in the video other than the four times the balls disapear
I admire the work of Mr. Slydini. Good job indeed. For this particular routine Mr. Steven Koehler is correct, particularly there is no explanation for why he does the last load when he is not vanishing anything in the end??? Just to load the 4th paper ball he is doing it & thats a dead giveaway. This only my humble opinion. Best...
I agree completely, I think he edges on the fact that people do not really know the trick when they look at him. I think it would have been better if he had made it seem like he had pulled the last ball out of the hat instead. And then revealed that the three others had already travelled there.
In my forty-plus years as a performer of "mystery entertainment," I will always regard my personal lessons with Slydini as the high light of my magical education. There will never be another like him.
The fact that he has to put his hands into the hat seems very unnatural to me. (I know WHY he does it,I just think that it somehow spoils the effect.) Honestly,it seems that the routine could be made more effective. Cpme on,would any reasonably intelligent NOT KNOW that when he places his hands into the hat, that that isn't how the balls got there? Don't get me wrong,I am a fan of Slydini. Any comments?
I see your point, but I cannot agree that a laymen wouldn't think that when he put his hands in the box, that there is a "tricky" move happening. I'm not saying it isn't a good routine, just that I think the handling could be evolved. No offense to anybody.
Well, that's the big question, isn't it? Dai Vernon said that Magicians stop thinking too soon. To me,this is an example of that. One problem in magic is that if one has "Legendary" status, everybody stops questioning what he does, and makes it Gospel. This is lemming mentality. I work in the REAL world, where if a spectator sees you put your hands somewhere, they will use that to deconstruct the effect. Isn't it only logical? It's a pretty effect, but I think a smart spectator would figure it out.
I've seen magicians use objects to pull things from or discard them, but the idea is the sleight of hand to do so perfectly you won't be able to see it.
I am not sure that I get your point. Yes-of course the "idea" is to do the sleights well. My point is,that I believe an intelligent,
inquisitive spectator could deconstruct this effect. Spectators have come a LONG WAY in the last 50 years-not only in their deductive reasoning skills, but also in their audacity and often uncouth behavior.
Let me understand you correctly-you are saying that it's ok to perform effects for spectators that might not fool them? No offense, but you clearly do not perform magic for a living. As a magician,I can appreciate an aesthetically beautiful effect, even if it doesn't fool. Laymen? No
They don't care about magic the way WE MAGICIANS do. The effect HAS to be deceptive,or it is a "manipulation",which is nice, but not magical. The most important thing is the EFFECT of the routine on the SPECTATOR.
I "moved on" before I ever read your comments. I think you are the one who doesn't understand. Additionally,I think we're having a language issue. As for "complicating" things,I think you are referring to the fact that I value clarity and thoroughness. Isn't that what artists are supposed to do? Why are magicians so bloody terrified of constructive criticism?
too many moves...

every trick is like that...but a lay man who see's the performance isn't paying attention to that-------a.k.a. misdirection

also the hand under the table isn't going in the hat so why be suspicous? :-)3

Sleight of hand can be presented in many creative ways, it doesn't have to be 100% deceptive.
