Great choreography, too bad about the tempo. Although both El Hambo and Pseudo-Yoik tolerate a wide variety of interpretations, this is a bit over the top. The metronome marking in the score is 152, and here we have a heart-stopping 180. I'm less concerned about the pronunciation -- since the text does not mean anything, there obviously cannot be a canonically correct way to pronounce it! What is more important is to be consistent within the group. -Jaakko Mäntyjärvi
We've just begun working on El Hambo in my university choir, and were actually just discussing the pronunciation today. I'm glad I saw your comment on this video!
It's possible we went that fast due to nerves and the nature of the show. If you listen to the copy from the CD released on iTunes, the tempo is more consistent and in line with what you are saying. We love(d) singing this piece. Thanks for writing it!
I think that this song is fun enough without the dancing. Just singing the song itself can get tiring and by adding the extraneous dancing and moving, the sound and energy of the choir is compromised.
I too did this TMEA (only I was a junior). I must say, this is probably the funnest song I've ever sung in my life. Watching the musical theater version of it was even good too. Too bad with all the dancing the nice, rich harmonic structure is lost. I've heard one chorus do (Dale warland singers I think) do it with a slower tempo and more of vowel pronunciation than the "psuedo yoik" and it was really neat...Keep Hambo-ing!
Actually, they did pronounce everything correctly. Besides, if it was a choir of that large, obviously it would be the director's fault if someonething was pronounced incorrectly.
Muy buena la interpretacion, enhorabuena!! y la puesta en escena muy linda, pero quizá un tempo demasiado rápido para mi gusto en este tema de Mantyjarvi :)
A very good perfomance!! Congratulations for this amazing song, but, in my view, it´s a very fast tempo.
@J11EVAN2 it's a performance, right? not a concert^^ and i think it fits the song, so what's wrong about it?

I've sung this song before, and it still remains my favorite song of all time. The pronunciation is a bitch but it sounds amazing when done right.

I'm amazed that in such a large choir, no one read the pronounciation guide at the beginning :(
