  • NICE work!!!

  • You play it sooooo nice, Jim !

God has blessed you with a big talent of playing piano ! :)

  • Wasn't the 10milesfromnowhere girl playing the version in B b?

  • AMAZING! I could listen to this over and over again, but please, please do it again and get all the way to the end. Very exciting.

  • Jazz on a classical structure: amazing.

  • These 10th make all the difference!

  • Is this composition in F from the performance in Paris? Because most of the recordings floating around have a different arrangement, and in the key of Bflat.

    Regardless, great playing!

  • sounds like performance quality to me lol! did you add any of your own improv btw?

  • I don't understand why people complain about you reading. Reading music is an art form itself, and being able to read and play with the groove that you play, that is something really hard to do!!! This performance is amazing, one of the best i've seen, clean, tempo is great!!! You manage to fit all the notes without stretching the beats (some people do this and say that is their "feeling", when is just that they can not play them)

  • verrry nice, loved it

    !

  • Fabulous!

  • When am I going to hear some Jim Martinez "originals?" You've got the technique but just like a classical pianist, you can learn all of the jazz literature playing someone else's music but a greater contribution, in my humble opinion, would be an expansion to such literature with original creations that someone else in the future will try to learn and emulate from your original!

    Joe Ramirez

  • @joeramirez9 Joe, good to hear from you. I would invite you to go to my website and look around at some of the things I have been doing in my career. I truly hope you aren't basing your comments on some of my YouTube videos. I'm currently on a short tour in North Carolina. I'm about as busy as a musician would want to be right now. Not sure I want to stop the career to write originals that may or may not ever be heard. But I respect your opinion. Thx!

  • @joeramirez9 You also might not know that I do a ton of arranging and that's where my heart and focus is. Check out my latest CD, "He Keeps Me Swinging" featuring two Grammy Award winning artists. I even wrote a tune on there. This old video, if you read the info, was just a tutorial for another pianist. It does not represent what I play for a living.

  • A 12 personas con un IQ menor a 90 no les gusto la interpretación.

  • Hi Jim! I saw you play twice at the Lionel Hampton Jazz festival and went to your lecture on making a living as a musician twice. I was very impressed and very happy to see your name on youtube! Unlike some people here, I find your playing very expressive and very enjoyable to listen to. Keep on rocki... Well... Jazzing out!

  • unbelievable, as someone who has tried and failed to play such ab advanced level song, I am very impressed.

  • Great playing! Unlike some viewers I think you expressed yourself quite well through the music, swaying and moving around are only for visual appeal. Great job!

  • lovely played , can you tell me from which oscar peterson transcription book you find the sheet ? thk you!

  • @pianojazzdreamer From Oscar's Note-for-Note book on his website.

  • Heard this on M.D.House and fell in love with it!

  • Shame about the crappy recording device because your playing is amazing. This, definitely, did not lack feel.

  • He played this before Hugh Laurie......

  • i find there is a good swing in most part its no oscar the king of swing but you got it right man....as for comment about not having swing...well....maybe pbstratocaster should post some of him before commenting...by the way do you writte on your own?

  • the 10milesfromnowhere sheet music is a different version, so surely you can excuse a different arrangement...?

  • We need to switch "Hands", your hands where made to read and interpret Oscar!

  • I'm a little upset that it ended so abruptly, you play so well D:

  • Amazing! First heard this on House M.D. When you say not up to "performance caliber" I hope you don't mean faster, because it was pretty flawless!

  • from 1:48 onwards awww WIN

  • hey this is great!! how did you practice it?

  • i hear so many oscar licks in there

  • My god you`re good ! I don`t think I can ever hope to play like you ^_^

  • Wow, what a great performance. And turning the pages too. You don't just play it, you feel it and I got that feeling too. You must really love Oscar too. You gave me some of the feeling that I get listening to him play. Bravo and thank you.

  • wow ich habe bisher noch nie jemanden gehoert, der dieses lied so wunderbar genial gespielt hat!!!!!

  • man, i want a grand piano, how much did yours cost? about?

  • piano sheets please

  • Fantastic :) and true to the original , you aint Oscar Peterson neither is anyone else but you did have done this song justice x

  • I really like this - wow, well played. It's a shame it gets cut off at the 5 minute mark.

  • Very beautiful ! :) What is your piano ?

  • compliments! you are a great artist.

    I

  • pbstratocaster-

you are sadly mistaken, the dynamics were greatly executed, accents perfectly played as oscar would. and it swings very well!...a piece like this, is meant to be played where there are places to swing and places to play straight, it cant be predictable like your trying to convince him to do but rather cause tension and be resolved to grab the listener...plus your a guitar player, what do you know?

as a fellow pianist, and saxophonist i can say that you excecuted this very well

  • Fantastic , lovely touch too, could you email me the link to the sheet music for the version you played, thanks for the nice piece. Robert in Ireland.

  • wow very good job man

  • Ahh! The video ends at the best part! Nice playing.

  • too bad, what a shame, he did not have enough video tape to finish the song

  • Niiice , great playing

  • WOW! You are amazing!

    I have so many questions!

  • this song always kills me.

  • could you link me the sheet music please?

    :) well done!

  • why does the vid stop after 5 mins despite the piece still goes on? a pitty =(

but nevertheless, great ... well done :)

  • oliver jones has a better version

  • the sheet on the grand piano music bothers me ;) despite this fact, well done :D

  • Thanks. Why should the music bother you? Read my description to the right, please. This was not a Jazz/Improv performance...I was showing another pianist a better way to approach it. That's all. :-)

  • very beautiful sir :) brings tears in the same way as peterson does, it's wonderful.

  • @itmsjim its really bright lol.. great performance tho

  • Since he's playing an OP transcription, it's almost impossible to keep it all in your head exactly the way OP played it w/o the music for an occasional prompt. Outstanding job!

  • @itmsjim where did you find the bass part of the beginning of the "piano solo"? it is different from the sheet (Oscar's Note-for-note) and yours sound way better... any help?

  • @Joniweinfurtner what makes you think it's for the song he is playin

  • @Joniweinfurtner dude this is a long song. It`s quite hard to remember the whole bit without reading

  • @Joniweinfurtner - i imagine your an expert

  • great! :D

  • Hello jim,

thank you for playing the transcription of Miles Black. It is very interesting. Even with the transcription, it is still difficult for me to play & to sound like your recording...

  • sorry i was really sleepy

    i mean

    man ... you are awesome

    XD

  • Man ... your awsome

  • Very very very great man!! Goooood job mate!!

  • Very nice (Y):D

  • Wonderful...perfect...no more words needed!

  • Wow, you play incredibly well....well done! (I'm definately adding this video to my favourites!)

  • Very nice job man, maybe you will play it better if you change the song with some changes made by your own stile, anyway god job ! =) keep playing

  • OMG

    I LOVE YOU :D

  • jim you´re a beast!

  • really nice job. but tell me I don't undertstand, it exist to version of hymn to freedom, one on B bemol and this one !?? i have the sheet music of the first

  • nice job (Y)

  • where can i find this sheet music or is this an arrangment you wrote?

  • nice play.good skill,how can i get this sheet ?

  • There's a transcription book by Miles Black called "Oscar Peterson: Note for Note Transcriptions of Classic Recordings".

  • On end of june i'll have my piano home! I'm just looking forward to play this! I looooooove this song so much!

    Great job guy

  • whats the titles of the book you get this from? sheet music i mean

    you pleay it wonderfully!

  • good work

  • One day... I will be able to play this piece as amazing as this!

  • Thats one of my favorit song!!

  • Too good. Your skill shows.

  • Absolutley brilliant! Stunning piece, played with such skill! I'm attempting to learn this atm, its hard but will be worth it! Keep it up!

  • Great!

    5*

  • ooooooooh shit that was amazing...i´ve just heard it in House M.D. and i had to find it. beautyful.

  • lol i know i had to find it too. good to know ian didn't die.

  • Have you ever recorded this piece properly? I like this more than oscars performance (shock horror)!

  • I agree with all the other comments. You are great! Inspirational. Thanks!

  • Beyond compare. Wonderful, wonderful performance. The best I ever heard I think. God bless you.

  • I've been looking for a great version of this to draw inspiration from. And this is it! Congratulations. You are fabulous!

  • Thank you for posting this video, this is one of my favorite songs. Great playing =)

  • My friend, you are playing just perfect. Congratulations. Tell me, original is on Bflat ou F ?

The swing is perfect, forget about bad comments. It´s just like Oscar Plays. Amazing job.

  • yeah. you must not forget that Oscar Peterson had a trio to add a bit of swing ;)

  • Perfect played. Youve got all the notes right. Improvisations are great,,,,BUT is doesnt swing REALLY. Its just like my musicteacher would play it. Correct but boring. It lacks PERCUSSION,SWING and MOVEMENTS. Theres no life in it. All the notes are there but,,,,,,

Sorry,,,,, I had to say this.

  • Thanks for the advice. I hope you're not referring to the beginning part because it's supposed to be rubato and then the time kicks in at 1:49. All the accents are there, it's not rushing or slowing down either. Is it? Let me know specifically what you hear...I'm open to advice. Maybe you could play it on video?

  • @pbstratocaster I don't share your opinion. - @itmsjim Well done. But what happened with the end?

  • you make me cry... fantastic interpretation ;)

  • Fantastic playing . Oscar Peterson was a true genius.

Great video. Thanks for the inspiration. I shall learn this song right now :)

  • You are awesome!

  • Hey, does anyone have the sheet music to this song, or know the basic chord progression? please let me know!!

  • I've got it;o)

  • Could u send it to me? plz

  • I'd give anything to have that music you're playing from. What's the name of the book? I wanna look for it at my local music stores or find it online :P

  • It sounds beautiful. Great job.

  • Very beautiful, you've been blessed with an amazing gift for piano!

What book is this transcription found in? I have some sheet music for Hymn to Freedom, but it seems like it leaves certain things out.

  • In all likelyhood he transcibed it himself.

  • MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!

  • you rock man ;)

  • realllllly good =)

  • Fantastic. I would pay good money to see this shot on on over-head cam.

  • ha ha ha ha ha ha

  • très agréable à écouter, et joli piano ! Je ne connaissais que la version géniale mais ancienne d'Oscar Peterson, mais franchement bravo !

  • Jim great performance. Oscar did it without

the printed leaves, but you got his groove.

    willem9967

  • SOmeone Can Help Me I Want the : "The Very Best Of Oscar Peterson" Book transctiptions amd many more!!! Please Someone can help me!!!!!

  • I really enjoy your music. I watched many of your videos on youtube. I used not to very like jazz-style music. But on hearing your music, I could not but stop appreciating it quietly. I thank God that He's been using you to touch many souls toward Him.

  • very nice ! ...

very neat, and articulate way of playing that great tune.. i love it...!! Thank's itmsjim !!

Is it Okay to ask for the piano's brand please, it just sounds amazing too !!

  • i think it's a Kawai but im not sure

  • Very Nice!!! :o)

  • brilliant. Was the piano tuned recently as it sounds as if it was unless it holds its pitch very well

  • wow very nice

  • This is AWSOME just awsome.....this brings out the beauty and spirit of the pianist and the insrument like no other song. The piano was made to be the main instrument....not the bass like it is ALWAYS used as in jazz bands

  • I disagree on both point. Bass is not always the lead instrument in jazz, and nothing wrong when it is doing a solo.

Ray Brown took the lead in the Oscar Peterson trio often, but even in his own trio (the Ray Brown trio) solo's were mainly done on piano.

BTW - WELL DONE! -Pianist who's playing on this video!

  • You should do a tutorial

  • Fantastic!!! keep up the work m8...

  • His playing, the piano, and the piece it self was all excellent... but wow, his page flipping skills are astounding. :)

  • Haha - i know right!! how the fuck does he do it and not interupt the piece

    PURE TALENT

  • Souless. I might be the piano, but... souless.

  • MY good god i love it!!!! WOW!

  • hi nice job but what's up with the end? it just stops.

  • i have never posted before - i have never felt the need - however, i really am very impressed indeed - it's humbling to hear you play and gives me hope - a true 'hymn to freedom' thank you...

  • Outstanding!... Really, thumbs up!

  • wow i sang this in a giant choir in grade 5 crazy havent heard this in years

  • It's amazing that you really play it slowly! in classical, youngsters(and some proffs., too) try to set new speed records for pieces. some manage to bring the point of the piece up...others don't. So I liked that you didn't hurry it. It was very well played

  • great technique and style.

Where can I find this score and do you know which oscar peterson recording is it based?

    Roland

  • It's from a live recording in Paris, the score is in a transcription book called Oscar Peterson Note for Note

  • You would have made the man proud!

  • this is definitely some nice playing dude! two thumbs up! =)

  • All you can say is AMAZING

  • Hi, great playing!

Is it possible to mail the music?

    Many thx

    filip

  • Too slow? Man its perfect! I get in from a 12 hour shift, chuck this on, and it soooo relaxes me! Excellent playing btw!

  • dude, its too slow!

  • No luck in finding a girl with this piece....but people lkike my playing beter....check out my channel please i posted a vid of me playing keyboard...please

  • What a great job! I particularly enjoy how calm and steady your playing is. I played this transcription myself and took more rhythmic liberties with it (I have a video of it on YouTube also), but was never as polished or as satisfied with my performance as I am with yours. Thanks for sharing.

    ~John

  • hey man how long have you been playing?

  • I really like this song i learned it now! Mabye itl help me FINALLY find a girl...mabye theyl finally stop judging me by my need of a cane and love of classical music and jazz....

  • Please Tell me where to get sheets for this song! Its my favorite kind! I knew how to play it but forgot=(

  • Wow, great playing Jim. What a beautiful piece!

I've really got to work on building up my speed. I get very inaccurate once I start playing faster... especially when changing positions.

  • That is stunningly beautiful. Have been wanting to get into some jazz piano, particularly inspired by some Red Garland and this song; wonderfully done.

  • I've read thru the comments, you are awesome guy, talented yet humble, may see it from the way you reply. I was classical trained, a teacher now, playing for church, solo occasionally, all played by following written script. You are so special, as a jazz pianist, you don't have many weired movement, just playing... faithfully, I like you, may God enlarge your territory.

  • Wonderful! Can you please tell me if this is pretty much verbatum from the Oscar Peterson transcription book? It can be purchased I assume? thanks for any info!!

  • could you send me the sheet music of it!??

    it was awesome!!!!

  • One of the best covers I've ever seen. A great tune that I hope to learn soon. One question though...

I've been looking for a good transcript of the song and really like this one, but in all the others I've found you need to stretch your fingers quite far. And that's a bit of a problem (I'm a 14 year old, 5' 2" girl, my hands aren't too large). So does your transcript require me to stretch my fingers a great distance? (don't want to buy something then find I can't play it :))

  • Your playing is fantastic. I don't think you should consider responding to any negative feedback as it does nothing to further your artistic pursuits.

  • am copying and pasting your comment about the sound equipment! "I use some basic vocal mics on the piano (two) and run them through a Mackie Mixer with a MicroVerb for slight effects. Put into my Mac directly using a shareware program called SoundStudio. Mix the audio and video in iMovie and that's it. Inexpensive and good sound. I did play with the mic placement for many weeks, though."

  • Well done. Beautiful sounding acoustic piano.

  • Very Nice.....wonderful tune so nicely played..great lesson !But throwaway the music transcrptions and become you! You have the chops to develope your own "bag of tricks" if you can play like this, get on with being itmsjim.

  • Thanks for the nice words. However, regarding your latter comment, I wonder how you'd react if I saw you tuning a Yamaha piano and said "great job, but why just tune Yamaha's? Get on and tune some Kawai's and Steinway's". Sorry, I just wish people would do some simple research before assuming one dimension. Check my website and MySpace site and I trust you'll see that I'm clearly itmsjim.

  • Yep your right...good luck in your pursuit of being itmsjim, you have the talent & tools to have many bright days ahead! OBTW I also do Bosendorfer's..:)

  • I know you had sincere intentions with your comments, which I do appreciate. Pleaset go to my website, pick out a CD and I'll send it to you at no charge as a "thank you". We pianists need tuners! Do you do Shigeru Kawai's? That's my baby! :-)

  • Hi Jim

Can't say that I ever had the pleasure of doing a Shigeru, mostly the Baby Grands GM 12-20-30s ect. I do many Yamaha's of all sizes. I'll check out your CD's and send you my addy...

  • I got the notes from the book.

You added notes to fill the left hand.

Only using the left hand notes from the book kinda has a missing feel to it.. no?

Is there any techinque your using to fill up the left hand part?

  • Please, could you tell me where you finally put the mics? Thanks.

  • sure. Send me your email privately and I'll send you a photo. My personal sound engineer asked Oscar Peterson's traveling soundman at a concert in SF a couple years ago & I took that, as well.

  • I am copying and pasting your comment about the sound equipment!

  • Super, why bother reading music?

  • thx. But please read my notes "About This Video" and you'll have your answer.

  • I will be singing this in our spring choir, i'm doing the alto part! I LOOOOVE THIS SONG AND I LOVE SINGING IT!

  • wat transcription book r u using???

i would lik to noe so i can buy it

  • oh my god.. when u like the music go to the shop and buy it!

  • Where can i get this sheet music? Are the embellishments part of the sheet music or improvisation?

  • Hi, very wonderfull music and interpretation too.

I would like to know if you could send me that sheet music by mail, I may thank you sending you other sheets like Claude bolling's "Concert for clasic guitar and jazz piano trio"

  • very well played, respect.

    which brand is your piano?

  • Thank you very much. It's a Kawai Shigeru (handmade) 7'6". It is one-of-a-kind. I have a live version of this tune with my trio on another video "A Tribute To Oscar Peterson". Please check it out if you get a chance because I play it better ;-) Thanks!

  • hehe, i didnt expect that a kawai sounds as good as this :P

  • Well Done! I've played this one before, and I really like your style. I'm sure you were as sad as I to hear that Oscar passed away just before Christmas. Canada's jazz king is dead. But well done in your playing!

  • Yes, but Oscar did not only belong to Canada, he belonged to all of us. And I will add that he was one of the greatest pianists to have ever played regardless of genre.

  • You got that right! Oscar was amazing,

  • that's a beautiful song. and very nicely played. congrats.

  • This brought a tear to my eye.Very beautiful playing. Thanks, rest and peace are surely yours, Mr. Peterson.

  • We are here right now, backstage, its a few minutes to 4:pm here in Toronto,Canada...watch your local news stations for coverage, as there are reporters here from Brazil, the Japans,China and from all over the U,S.A..

best to all...Diana Krall is at least 6" 1" With out shoes...Elvis Costell o is also back here at the free concert...Quincy Jones we heard is runnig late.Best to all!

  • Great job with this fantastic song! You just motivated me to start practicing again!

  • guess wat im in a private school and like oscar's daughter ( celine peterson ) is in our school and like our school got his signiture and like that is soooo coool because i just knew that!

    <
