Is this composition in F from the performance in Paris? Because most of the recordings floating around have a different arrangement, and in the key of Bflat.
I don't understand why people complain about you reading. Reading music is an art form itself, and being able to read and play with the groove that you play, that is something really hard to do!!! This performance is amazing, one of the best i've seen, clean, tempo is great!!! You manage to fit all the notes without stretching the beats (some people do this and say that is their "feeling", when is just that they can not play them)
When am I going to hear some Jim Martinez "originals?" You've got the technique but just like a classical pianist, you can learn all of the jazz literature playing someone else's music but a greater contribution, in my humble opinion, would be an expansion to such literature with original creations that someone else in the future will try to learn and emulate from your original!
@joeramirez9 Joe, good to hear from you. I would invite you to go to my website and look around at some of the things I have been doing in my career. I truly hope you aren't basing your comments on some of my YouTube videos. I'm currently on a short tour in North Carolina. I'm about as busy as a musician would want to be right now. Not sure I want to stop the career to write originals that may or may not ever be heard. But I respect your opinion. Thx!
@joeramirez9 You also might not know that I do a ton of arranging and that's where my heart and focus is. Check out my latest CD, "He Keeps Me Swinging" featuring two Grammy Award winning artists. I even wrote a tune on there. This old video, if you read the info, was just a tutorial for another pianist. It does not represent what I play for a living.
Hi Jim! I saw you play twice at the Lionel Hampton Jazz festival and went to your lecture on making a living as a musician twice. I was very impressed and very happy to see your name on youtube! Unlike some people here, I find your playing very expressive and very enjoyable to listen to. Keep on rocki... Well... Jazzing out!
Great playing! Unlike some viewers I think you expressed yourself quite well through the music, swaying and moving around are only for visual appeal. Great job!
i find there is a good swing in most part its no oscar the king of swing but you got it right man....as for comment about not having swing...well....maybe pbstratocaster should post some of him before commenting...by the way do you writte on your own?
Wow, what a great performance. And turning the pages too. You don't just play it, you feel it and I got that feeling too. You must really love Oscar too. You gave me some of the feeling that I get listening to him play. Bravo and thank you.
you are sadly mistaken, the dynamics were greatly executed, accents perfectly played as oscar would. and it swings very well!...a piece like this, is meant to be played where there are places to swing and places to play straight, it cant be predictable like your trying to convince him to do but rather cause tension and be resolved to grab the listener...plus your a guitar player, what do you know?
as a fellow pianist, and saxophonist i can say that you excecuted this very well
Fantastic , lovely touch too, could you email me the link to the sheet music for the version you played, thanks for the nice piece. Robert in Ireland.
Thanks. Why should the music bother you? Read my description to the right, please. This was not a Jazz/Improv performance...I was showing another pianist a better way to approach it. That's all. :-)
Since he's playing an OP transcription, it's almost impossible to keep it all in your head exactly the way OP played it w/o the music for an occasional prompt. Outstanding job!
@itmsjim where did you find the bass part of the beginning of the "piano solo"? it is different from the sheet (Oscar's Note-for-note) and yours sound way better... any help?
thank you for playing the transcription of Miles Black. It is very interesting. Even with the transcription, it is still difficult for me to play & to sound like your recording...
really nice job. but tell me I don't undertstand, it exist to version of hymn to freedom, one on B bemol and this one !?? i have the sheet music of the first
Perfect played. Youve got all the notes right. Improvisations are great,,,,BUT is doesnt swing REALLY. Its just like my musicteacher would play it. Correct but boring. It lacks PERCUSSION,SWING and MOVEMENTS. Theres no life in it. All the notes are there but,,,,,,
Thanks for the advice. I hope you're not referring to the beginning part because it's supposed to be rubato and then the time kicks in at 1:49. All the accents are there, it's not rushing or slowing down either. Is it? Let me know specifically what you hear...I'm open to advice. Maybe you could play it on video?
I'd give anything to have that music you're playing from. What's the name of the book? I wanna look for it at my local music stores or find it online :P
I really enjoy your music. I watched many of your videos on youtube. I used not to very like jazz-style music. But on hearing your music, I could not but stop appreciating it quietly. I thank God that He's been using you to touch many souls toward Him.

I really like this song i learned it now! Mabye itl help me FINALLY find a girl...mabye theyl finally stop judging me by my need of a cane and love of classical music and jazz....
That is stunningly beautiful. Have been wanting to get into some jazz piano, particularly inspired by some Red Garland and this song; wonderfully done.
I've read thru the comments, you are awesome guy, talented yet humble, may see it from the way you reply. I was classical trained, a teacher now, playing for church, solo occasionally, all played by following written script. You are so special, as a jazz pianist, you don't have many weired movement, just playing... faithfully, I like you, may God enlarge your territory.
Wonderful! Can you please tell me if this is pretty much verbatum from the Oscar Peterson transcription book? It can be purchased I assume? thanks for any info!!
One of the best covers I've ever seen. A great tune that I hope to learn soon. One question though...
I've been looking for a good transcript of the song and really like this one, but in all the others I've found you need to stretch your fingers quite far. And that's a bit of a problem (I'm a 14 year old, 5' 2" girl, my hands aren't too large). So does your transcript require me to stretch my fingers a great distance? (don't want to buy something then find I can't play it :))
Your playing is fantastic. I don't think you should consider responding to any negative feedback as it does nothing to further your artistic pursuits.
am copying and pasting your comment about the sound equipment! "I use some basic vocal mics on the piano (two) and run them through a Mackie Mixer with a MicroVerb for slight effects. Put into my Mac directly using a shareware program called SoundStudio. Mix the audio and video in iMovie and that's it. Inexpensive and good sound. I did play with the mic placement for many weeks, though."
Very Nice.....wonderful tune so nicely played..great lesson !But throwaway the music transcrptions and become you! You have the chops to develope your own "bag of tricks" if you can play like this, get on with being itmsjim.
Thanks for the nice words. However, regarding your latter comment, I wonder how you'd react if I saw you tuning a Yamaha piano and said "great job, but why just tune Yamaha's? Get on and tune some Kawai's and Steinway's". Sorry, I just wish people would do some simple research before assuming one dimension. Check my website and MySpace site and I trust you'll see that I'm clearly itmsjim.
Yep your right...good luck in your pursuit of being itmsjim, you have the talent & tools to have many bright days ahead! OBTW I also do Bosendorfer's..:)
I know you had sincere intentions with your comments, which I do appreciate. Pleaset go to my website, pick out a CD and I'll send it to you at no charge as a "thank you". We pianists need tuners! Do you do Shigeru Kawai's? That's my baby! :-)
Can't say that I ever had the pleasure of doing a Shigeru, mostly the Baby Grands GM 12-20-30s ect. I do many Yamaha's of all sizes. I'll check out your CD's and send you my addy...
sure. Send me your email privately and I'll send you a photo. My personal sound engineer asked Oscar Peterson's traveling soundman at a concert in SF a couple years ago & I took that, as well.
I am copying and pasting your comment about the sound equipment! "I use some basic vocal mics on the piano (two) and run them through a Mackie Mixer with a MicroVerb for slight effects. Put into my Mac directly using a shareware program called SoundStudio. Mix the audio and video in iMovie and that's it. Inexpensive and good sound. I would like to know if you could send me that sheet music by mail, I may thank you sending you other sheets like Claude bolling's "Concert for clasic guitar and jazz piano trio"
Thank you very much. It's a Kawai Shigeru (handmade) 7'6". It is one-of-a-kind. I have a live version of this tune with my trio on another video "A Tribute To Oscar Peterson". Please check it out if you get a chance because I play it better ;-) Thanks!
Well Done! I've played this one before, and I really like your style. I'm sure you were as sad as I to hear that Oscar passed away just before Christmas. Canada's jazz king is dead. But well done in your playing!
Yes, but Oscar did not only belong to Canada, he belonged to all of us. And I will add that he was one of the greatest pianists to have ever played regardless of genre.
We are here right now, backstage, its a few minutes to 4:pm here in Toronto,Canada...watch your local news stations for coverage, as there are reporters here from Brazil, the Japans,China and from all over the U,S.A..
best to all...Diana Krall is at least 6" 1" With out shoes...Elvis Costell o is also back here at the free concert...Quincy Jones we heard is runnig late.Best to all!
guess wat im in a private school and like oscar's daughter ( celine peterson ) is in our school and like our school got his signiture and like that is soooo coool because i just knew that!
NICE work!!!

I disagree on both point. Bass is not always the lead instrument in jazz, and nothing wrong when it is doing a solo.
Ray Brown took the lead in the Oscar Peterson trio often, but even in his own trio (the Ray Brown trio) solo's were mainly done on piano.

I've really got to work on building up my speed. I get very inaccurate once I start playing faster... especially when changing positions.

Hi Jim
Can't say that I ever had the pleasure of doing a Shigeru, mostly the Baby Grands GM 12-20-30s ect. I do many Yamaha's of all sizes. I'll check out your CD's and send you my addy...

I got the notes from the book.
You added notes to fill the left hand.
Only using the left hand notes from the book kinda has a missing feel to it.. no?
Is there any techinque your using to fill up the left hand part?

Please, could you tell me where you finally put the mics? Thanks.
Mamasan41 3 years ago
sure. Send me your email privately and I'll send you a photo. My personal sound engineer asked Oscar Peterson's traveling soundman at a concert in SF a couple years ago & I took that, as well.

eugenelo1 4 years ago
Hi, very wonderfull music and interpretation too.
I would like to know if you could send me that sheet music by mail, I may thank you sending you other sheets like Claude bolling's "Concert for clasic guitar and jazz piano trio"
andesclimb 4 years ago
very well played, respect.
which brand is your piano?
rootinier 4 years ago
Thank you very much. It's a Kawai Shigeru (handmade) 7'6". It is one-of-a-kind. I have a live version of this tune with my trio on another video "A Tribute To Oscar Peterson". Please check it out if you get a chance because I play it better ;-) Thanks!

hehe, i didnt expect that a kawai sounds as good as this :P

Well Done! I've played this one before, and I really like your style. I'm sure you were as sad as I to hear that Oscar passed away just before Christmas. Canada's jazz king is dead. But well done in your playing!
VancouverComposer 4 years ago
Yes, but Oscar did not only belong to Canada, he belonged to all of us. And I will add that he was one of the greatest pianists to have ever played regardless of genre.

You got that right! Oscar was amazing,
