@ShredableGuitar I do not have any videos of me playing........ but i can play some of his songs and i ain't good at guitar. Go ask any guitar teacher or guitarist whos actually good, they will say Joe Satriani is a better guitarist even if his songs don't sound as hard....

@kranen1 I agree with you. Theres more to it than just speed. Its about dynamics, tone, and the flow of the song. However if you listen to Paul Gilberts solo album it does flow quite well, he is one of the tops with steve, petrucci and stariani which is why those 4 all play G3 together. Except Paul never plays with steve, they don't like each other.... don't know why..
Malmsteen may not be as good as Paul or JohnP as far as technicality but he has the best, most musical and most recognizable rock vibrato of all times.......oh, and if it wasn't for him Paul and John would have a job at Burger King by now.....oh, and we would still be listening to grunge cos he was the only one making shred albums in the 90s......oh, and if he wasn't around some guys like Broderick,Loomis would have Cobain as an inspiration.....So, THANKS YNGWIE!

Anyone who wastes energy over "Gilbert or Yngwie" is a retard, and doesn't understand the beauty of what both of them are doing. Good luck in your musical endeavors, boneheads!
@shoter9696 Paul is better in so many ways. A better performer, a cleaner shredder, and his vibrato and phrasing are off the scale. Plus he's such a nice guy!
@CoreThrasherGLB i agree jimi hendrix is not fast at all but hé kicks ass and there is more than speed to be a good guitarist but you can't compare jimi hendrix to this (whats the point of comparing at all -_-')
@CoreThrasherGLB What's annoying about people who hate Malmsteen is they do not listen to classical music or know music theory, thusly they cannot understand what an emotional feel is in such a style. Now I do believe Yngwie had a better style in the early days in place of what he is now. I find it inexorably difficult to fathom such an idiocy and hipocrasy of this entire scenario. I would not critisize jazz if I did not understand jazz theory or music. Stop being childish and be childlike.
@shoter9696 malmsteen might not as clean as gilbert or petrucci or vai or Becker, but he has to be good to invent neo-classic metal, which is my favourite style of metal..... and yeah vai doesnt play neo, but he is a great guitarist non the less.
@shoter9696 Petrucci, for the sole reason that even though their playing technique is flawless, and both are awesome, Gilbert has this thing where he doesn't use his 2nd finger much, while Petrucci plays normally (if such inhuman playing can be considered "normal") Kinda like Guthrie Govan is one of the best players in the world, but doesn't use his pinky much...
@NikkElektrik I know what you mean, yeah. For things that I'd normally use my index, middle and pinky for, Gilbert would replace the middle finger for his ring finger. It totally makes sense when you're shredding higher up the neck, though, so I've been getting used to it.
@OCNmeticadpa Yeah I know exactly what you mean... Ive been having A LOT of trouble learning PG's style because I can't get the hang of using my ring finger over my middle finger >.<
@karwash2011 Ahh, are you talking about things like 12-14-15 where he'd use index, ring and pinky? They take some getting used to, but his way really is superior once you practice it. c:
@OCNmeticadpa no I understand those, that makes total sense.
Im talking about situations where, for example, he'll do minor arpeggios with a sus4 (like 12-14-16), and rather than using his index, middle, and pinky, like every normal person lol, he'll use his ring finger rather than his middle.
And I suppose in most cases it really doesn't matter if I were to just keep using my middle, but there are some situations where it's impossible to make some of his string hops without doing it his way :/
@karwash2011 Ahh yes, his famous arpeggios! They also take a LOT of practice for me, but they became easier with time. It's a much more economical use of fingers.
In this take of Technical Difficulties, he plays 17-19-20 on the B with his index, ring and pinky, but then oddly, he plays 22-19-17 with his pinky, ring and index! That just makes no sense to me.
@OCNmeticadpa Yeah exactly! And its fucking hard... Do you think it's really necessary to do them that way? would it be so awful to throw in your middle finger instead? Or even play the whole arrangement with double hammer-ons instead?
@karwash2011 His m7 arpeggios where he plays something like 12-15-17 using index, ring and pinky... now that I can actually agree with. Again, it takes practice, but it feels much more naturally and efficient.
I don't think it's necessary to do them that way. I can't really do it at all - it just doesn't seem like the sensible way to play it. Same with the intro to Fuzz Universe - he plays it using his famous three fingers, whereas I'd sub a middle finger for a ring...
@OCNmeticadpa Lol yeah its nuts... Paul Gilbert and Marty Friedman are the two guitarists Ive been trying very hard to over lately, and between Friedman's freaky up-strum patterns and Gilbert's uncommon use one his 3rd finger, its been a fucking nightmare :'(
@karwash2011 Yeah, I know how you feel. Gilbert's horrible to try and replicate most of the time. I don't understand his picking hand, either, but that's because I pick in a really weird way (kind of backwards to how most people pick) thanks to being double jointed. I think Shawn Lane picked in a similar fashion to myself.
@shoter9696 Malmsteen does not suck, neither Paul or Petrucci or Jarzombek or MAB etc... they are just different in what they do, get over it, real music is not a competence like comercial music. and guess what Malmsteen is one of the biggest influences of Paul Gilbert, if he reads your comment he would slap your face off, but I guess he is too kind to do that.
Malmsteen doesn's suck , some people don't know vivaldi , beethoven , mozart , paganini . that means they never be able to understand yngwie's music :)
@shoter9696 Please come back and express your opinion when you've learned a little bit of music theory.
Yngwie, Petrucci and Gilbert are all very good guitarists. Technically speaking, Gilbert is the superior to both of them. If you want a real matchup, put Gilbert against Tony MacAlpine or Greg Howe.
@dbzaddict444 Superior to Yngwie and Petrucci... I could've said that he's the superior technical guitarist of the three of them, but instead I chose to say that he's superior to both Petrucci and Yngwie. I pulled Gilbert out of the aforementioned group. Guess I gotta polish my english a little bit.
But it's good that you pointed out these flaws so that I can learn from my mistakes.
Yeah but I'd argue that theory has nothing to do with one's technical prowess. For a long time I couldn't read sheet music and didnt get chord theory(still a little dark ehre and there) but I know a lot of techniques
@dbzaddict444 Of course you don't need to know music theory to be a skilled guitarist (George Lynch is a prime example), however it is a very big plus if you can because then you can explain what exactly you're doing to other people who also want to play what you created. Steve Vai is one of those guitarists who has a deep understanding of music theory and has an awesome left-right hand synchronization (same with Greg Howe and Yngwie) and therefore he experiments a lot with what he knows.
@nimaside I said technically speaking, Paul is superior. I love both Petrucci and Gilbert, but Petrucci is more fitting in a band than as a stand alone guitarist. Petrucci makes beautiful, enchanting, epic music while Gilbert is more of a solo guy. Both of them are guitar gods, but Gilbert is the most technically impressive of the two.
Petrucci makes great music, Gilbert does great shows.
Give it a rest man. It was one opinion over a section that I made very clear. Period.
And yes, I guess I am that "kind of prick" as you put it because I have that "kind of ear"....you know...or maybe you don't. Either way, it's one opinion. So....with all repsect...f*ck off!
they wanted him to compose a "betcha can't play this segment," but unfortunately everyone died in the making, only Paul emerged unharmed, now Mr. Big and Racer X are making comebacks, and I haven't heard a betcha can't play this segment since 2009
I've seen Malmsteem live....he contorts his face like a bad sex scene from a porno.
Personally, I like it when the instrument comes alive as if it's playing itself. IMO. You want expression, go check out Elvis video of him singing "Im So Lonesome I could Cry"...rendition. He states "it's the sadest song he's ever heard" ...that's a lot of emotion there.
Sure, it's possible. It was an opinion well versed in a musical background but still an opinion. Before I knew it, jerks like DillionBerkley were off with ad hominem attacks with virtually no reasoning...just non-sensical diatribe and verbal diarrhea.
I made a comparison of virtuoso trumpet players that I have met and heard live as well as Malmsteem....they ignored the comparisons or were just too ignorant to relate to what I was stating. IMO-Malmsteem is a cleaner player, IMO.
Christ.... They both shred.. Leave it at that.... And there not the only ones! I had a little,.. had to be like 14 or 15 year old kid almost floor me when i was getting strings the other day. He was amazing... And I've given lessons in shred for years.....
@garcia356 Wow you would say something about age considering you talk like a 12 year old. I never claimed to be mature and could give two fucks less whether i am or not. Flame war - arguing about something pointless and hopelessly trying to insult people. I dont give a fuck if my playing is muddy. Any other enlightening nonsense you would like to share with me? This is a PG vid. Sharing a negative opinion is only going to antagonize people so why bother...oh because you're a douche.
is that an Ibanez....V?! never seen one, must be his special guitar. love this track, Paul Gilbert is a master :D if awesomeness of this magnitude doesn't reach aliens in deep space, they must be having technical difficulties
+who said muddy? Paul is one of the most built to play well guitarists I've ever encountered and I've been a guitar fan since about 1980 ( i was 10) seriously this guy is out of ths world the man was dsesigned to play fast guitar 6'4" long ass fingers and skinny as a rail ,ever notice how george lynch wasn't the same after lifting weights? this long muscles are faster he's a freak and there will probably never be any one quite like him... the man is special, that's all I'm saying.
@guitarplayrRJ I started playing my brother's guitar when I was a kid and I've picked it up and put it down over the years. Sometimes I didn't play for years. As much as it hurts to say it, I've been 'playing' for 30 years now (owch.. that hurts).
I just play because I like the guitar. Played with a band once at about 12YO. Took 3 or 4 Park District lessons as a kid but figured everything else out myself. Now that I'm old, I considering lessons. ;-P
I just can't get that economy of effort. He's picking machine-gun staccato but he barely moves the pick.
I've never seen anyone give good advice on how they can keep themselves that relaxed while playing so intensely. As soon as my rational mind clicks in (when I'm not letting the muscle memory run), I tense up and it all goes to hell.
I think it's the biggest thing holding back my technique and I'd love to hear people share their insight.
@ffakr I'm no technical genius but I've mucked around long enough to know what I should be practising, even though I too often don't. The best exercise I think for smoothness and mechanical ease is subdividing a slow tempo, so start at like 60bpm. One note a click. Focus on perfect technique and timing. Then two. Regardless of whether you can play way faster, get it flawless. Then 3,4, 6, 8. You want to be clever and tricky do 5s, 7s, 9s. Don't strain.Up a few clicks every time it's comfortable.
wait muddy?! sure but thats the rawness his trying to bring out of the rock guitar style. guitar isnt suppose to sound or be played like a fucking keyboard you retards! you fuckers stick with ur keytars ex malmsteem fags
You really can tell he LOVES playing this song. No other shredders really show that the're enjoying what they're playing and love their fans as much as Paul does. He truly is a great musician who's grateful to have fans who love him and his music. What more can a musician ask for? So many others take their fans for granted, like it's their job to get up and show their fans how awesome they are. He's a TRUE musician. I wish more guitarists had his attitude. It's not a competition, its music.
i love the way people are like yeah his technique is muddy and Malmsteem could do it better. heres one stfu Malmsteem and paul gilbert are 2 great guitarist. how can so many ppl just go oh Malmsteem's shit or other guitarists like slash are shit. look at the facts a. they are obviously not shit cause they are at a position where they are great and b. dont say someones shit cause most ppl who say it are worse off. e.g. cant play guitar or do and just suck ass at it.
@Theory94 I personally feel like its the other way around and gilbert plays more precisely. but like you said, its just opinion and who you like more. there is no better or worse of these guys. They are all incredible.
Malmsteen can't play to music. Just watch the G3 with him, vai, and satch. All he is mindless shredding. Paul Gilbert is the fucking man and he isn't even human. He can shred and play with feeling. He has excellent showmanship as well. If morons think malmsteen is the shit, just check out Gutrie Govan, Jeff Loomis, John Petrucci, or Rob Marcello. They all put that fat fuck to shame
@olpaxis dude that is exactly what I thought. If muse and PG combined their awesomeness, we run the risk of imploding the universe with a black hole created from the fusion of such geniuses. If that happened, only buckethead would survive - he's immune to implosions of awesomenss.
@EMOHOLACAWST lol i love when kkids like you say a certain syle of music sucks. haha grow up. jazz fusion players are som,e of paul's idols. Paul IDOLIZED Shawn Lane who is possibly the greatest (and def the fastest) of all time.
LOL@ people who says PG isnt good, or is muddy, has no resume, etc. How's your guitar playing? Post a vid of your original music, oh wait, you probably don't even play... people are fucking stupid.
Yes, I differentiate between phrasing and clear musical ability. And yes, lollipophugo is correct. As my post says "phrasing" which means he either starts a "measure too quickly" or "too slowly" and as a result, it ends up sounding rushed or "muddy". Read the post..!!
lollipophugo:
"From about 3:12 on to about 3:25, his technique is "MUDDY" and his phrasing sucks. And yes, Malmsteem could play that lick way cleaner, better, and not muddy it up the Gilbert does."
@garcia356 Picking out every technical flaw, If I went on a Malmsteem vid and picked out the muddy picking, or his shitty phrasing, believe me, I wouldn't be done commenting till next week.
@FanZhai Malmsteen is an amazing player but he cant play things so interesting like PG . he can only play (&#*)(@&$)&)_@#&%_)^&_@$*^#) and no one knows what he is playing LOL
@garcia356 malmsteen got no style. just fast, wicked, shredding. not like PG. PG is awesome, look at his face when he does his solos, very expressive, unlike malmsteen.
@garcia356 So in those short seconds his technique was muddy, he wrote the damn song he can muddy it up, he's played it a million times more then you have (if you can even play the song) cut the dude some slack, only over analytical basterds like you pick up on this crap plus I doubt anyone in the audience was thinking "damn wasn't his technique muddy from 3:12 to 3:25 like Jesus Christ, sorry Paul you can't please everybody :/
Loving the Ibanez flying V there but I don't actually think they sell those, same as the semi hollow he uses in that part japanese vid with marty friedman,
really nice looking guitar but unless anyone knows different? I think they were one offs
For anyone who says he lacks soul (or whatever terms these idiots use) just take a look at his face when he's playing. He's loving it and putting everything he has into his performance.
Its really funny to see u ppl Comparing. I m sure non of us including me is not good as those Guitar Gods so we dont have the right to compare.

@lolzmaster33 Can Hendrix shred at all? Idk
CoreThrasherGLB 6 months ago
@CoreThrasherGLB i agree jimi hendrix is not fast at all but hé kicks ass and there is more than speed to be a good guitarist but you can't compare jimi hendrix to this (whats the point of comparing at all -_-')
lolzmaster33 6 months ago
@lolzmaster33 Yea I'm not really into comparing either. And that is true, all speed is no emotion, Malmsteen, is a no go for me.
CoreThrasherGLB 6 months ago
@CoreThrasherGLB What's annoying about people who hate Malmsteen is they do not listen to classical music or know music theory, thusly they cannot understand what an emotional feel is in such a style. Now I do believe Yngwie had a better style in the early days in place of what he is now. I find it inexorably difficult to fathom such an idiocy and hipocrasy of this entire scenario. I would not critisize jazz if I did not understand jazz theory or music. Stop being childish and be childlike.

@kinkyjew672 the struggles of people everywhere trying to justify malmsteen everywhere are now over as of that writing,

CoreThrasherGLB 6 months ago
@CoreThrasherGLB actually i like the song brothers from yngwie but that's the only whith emotion and a little bit of speed
lolzmaster33 6 months ago
@shoter9696
Petrucci can play unbelievably fast, even more so than Paul Gilbert. I've seen it. If we're talking raw chops, it's definitely Petrucci.
However, Gilbert's playing is much more exciting, which wins every time.
Daim0th 6 months ago
@shoter9696 malmsteen might not as clean as gilbert or petrucci or vai or Becker, but he has to be good to invent neo-classic metal, which is my favourite style of metal..... and yeah vai doesnt play neo, but he is a great guitarist non the less.

yamorama1 6 months ago
@shoter9696 I have to say Paul because his playing/teaching is infectious, just my opinion.
muzikscud23 6 months ago
@shoter9696 Petrucci, for the sole reason that even though their playing technique is flawless, and both are awesome, Gilbert has this thing where he doesn't use his 2nd finger much, while Petrucci plays normally (if such inhuman playing can be considered "normal") Kinda like Guthrie Govan is one of the best players in the world, but doesn't use his pinky much...
NikkElektrik 6 months ago
@NikkElektrik I know what you mean, yeah. For things that I'd normally use my index, middle and pinky for, Gilbert would replace the middle finger for his ring finger. It totally makes sense when you're shredding higher up the neck, though, so I've been getting used to it.
OCNmeticadpa 5 months ago
@OCNmeticadpa Yeah I know exactly what you mean... Ive been having A LOT of trouble learning PG's style because I can't get the hang of using my ring finger over my middle finger >.<
karwash2011 5 months ago
@karwash2011 Ahh, are you talking about things like 12-14-15 where he'd use index, ring and pinky? They take some getting used to, but his way really is superior once you practice it. c:
OCNmeticadpa 5 months ago
@OCNmeticadpa no I understand those, that makes total sense.
Im talking about situations where, for example, he'll do minor arpeggios with a sus4 (like 12-14-16), and rather than using his index, middle, and pinky, like every normal person lol, he'll use his ring finger rather than his middle.
And I suppose in most cases it really doesn't matter if I were to just keep using my middle, but there are some situations where it's impossible to make some of his string hops without doing it his way :/
karwash2011 5 months ago
@karwash2011 Ahh yes, his famous arpeggios! They also take a LOT of practice for me, but they became easier with time. It's a much more economical use of fingers.
In this take of Technical Difficulties, he plays 17-19-20 on the B with his index, ring and pinky, but then oddly, he plays 22-19-17 with his pinky, ring and index! That just makes no sense to me.
OCNmeticadpa 5 months ago
@OCNmeticadpa Yeah exactly! And its fucking hard... Do you think it's really necessary to do them that way? would it be so awful to throw in your middle finger instead? Or even play the whole arrangement with double hammer-ons instead?
karwash2011 5 months ago
@karwash2011 His m7 arpeggios where he plays something like 12-15-17 using index, ring and pinky... now that I can actually agree with. Again, it takes practice, but it feels much more naturally and efficient.
I don't think it's necessary to do them that way. I can't really do it at all - it just doesn't seem like the sensible way to play it. Same with the intro to Fuzz Universe - he plays it using his famous three fingers, whereas I'd sub a middle finger for a ring...
OCNmeticadpa 5 months ago
@OCNmeticadpa Lol yeah its nuts... Paul Gilbert and Marty Friedman are the two guitarists Ive been trying very hard to over lately, and between Friedman's freaky up-strum patterns and Gilbert's uncommon use one his 3rd finger, its been a fucking nightmare :'(
karwash2011 5 months ago
@karwash2011 cover*
karwash2011 5 months ago

EternalSolitudeOff 4 months ago

deathbastardable 4 months ago
@shoter9696 Please come back and express your opinion when you've learned a little bit of music theory.
Yngwie, Petrucci and Gilbert are all very good guitarists. Technically speaking, Gilbert is the superior to both of them. If you want a real matchup, put Gilbert against Tony MacAlpine or Greg Howe.
IxMAKExUxGOxLOL 4 months ago 8
@IxMAKExUxGOxLOL Learn to count, you listed three names and said 'both
dbzaddict444 4 months ago
@dbzaddict444 Superior to Yngwie and Petrucci... I could've said that he's the superior technical guitarist of the three of them, but instead I chose to say that he's superior to both Petrucci and Yngwie. I pulled Gilbert out of the aforementioned group. Guess I gotta polish my english a little bit.
But it's good that you pointed out these flaws so that I can learn from my mistakes.
IxMAKExUxGOxLOL 4 months ago
@IxMAKExUxGOxLOL No problem
Yeah but I'd argue that theory has nothing to do with one's technical prowess. For a long time I couldn't read sheet music and didnt get chord theory(still a little dark ehre and there) but I know a lot of techniques
dbzaddict444 4 months ago
@dbzaddict444 Of course you don't need to know music theory to be a skilled guitarist (George Lynch is a prime example), however it is a very big plus if you can because then you can explain what exactly you're doing to other people who also want to play what you created. Steve Vai is one of those guitarists who has a deep understanding of music theory and has an awesome left-right hand synchronization (same with Greg Howe and Yngwie) and therefore he experiments a lot with what he knows.
IxMAKExUxGOxLOL 4 months ago
@IxMAKExUxGOxLOL I disagree with you saying Paul is superior to Petrucci.
nimaside 1 month ago
@nimaside I said technically speaking, Paul is superior. I love both Petrucci and Gilbert, but Petrucci is more fitting in a band than as a stand alone guitarist. Petrucci makes beautiful, enchanting, epic music while Gilbert is more of a solo guy. Both of them are guitar gods, but Gilbert is the most technically impressive of the two.
Petrucci makes great music, Gilbert does great shows.

Now that I'm old, I considering lessons. ;-P
I've recently started making them.
ffakr 1 year ago
I just can't get that economy of effort. He's picking machine-gun staccato but he barely moves the pick.
I've never seen anyone give good advice on how they can keep themselves that relaxed while playing so intensely. As soon as my rational mind clicks in (when I'm not letting the muscle memory run), I tense up and it all goes to hell.
I think it's the biggest thing holding back my technique and I'd love to hear people share their insight.
ffakr 1 year ago
@ffakr I'm no technical genius but I've mucked around long enough to know what I should be practising, even though I too often don't. The best exercise I think for smoothness and mechanical ease is subdividing a slow tempo, so start at like 60bpm. One note a click. Focus on perfect technique and timing. Then two. Regardless of whether you can play way faster, get it flawless. Then 3,4, 6, 8. You want to be clever and tricky do 5s, 7s, 9s. Don't strain.Up a few clicks every time it's comfortable.
