This is the war (Pacific) that is down-played even though it was one of the most brutal of all wars. In one battle (Okinawa) we lost 12,000 k.i.a. and something like 33,000 killed from wounded or being sick and not getting care because of being stuck in the rain and mud. Malaria had a big role too.
My father Dan Winsor, Marines 4THdivision HQ scout/observer, wounded on Iwo and made 3 other landings died on 7/17/11. A hero and loved by all his family . God bless all US Forces in WWII and today. RIP Daniel Loring Winsor.

This is the war (Pacific) that is down-played even though it was one of the most brutal of all wars. In one battle (Okinawa) we lost 12,000 k.i.a. and something like 33,000 killed from wounded or being sick and not getting care because of being stuck in the rain and mud. Malaria had a big role too.

My father Dan Winsor, Marines 4THdivision HQ scout/observer, wounded on Iwo and made 3 other landings died on 7/17/11. A hero and loved by all his family . God bless all US Forces in WWII and today. RIP Daniel Loring Winsor.

Just think approx 35 years after WWII Japan would release Nintendo... (released in Japan in 1983. not released to rest of world until 1985) they beat us to it...

Watch letters of Iwo Jima AND Flags of our fathers, both movies made by eastwood about Iwo from both sides of the fight.
Explains alot, like why teh japanese leader allowed the first wave to come up so easy before opening fire. Because he knew he wasn't getting off the island alive, that he had to kill as many as he could before they killed him to make them think twice about invading japan. He didn't know we entered the nuclear age though.

I don't know of any general who thought Iwo would be easy. All they had to go on was recent island battles (Tarawa, Saipan) and well read the bloody history of those battles and then blame the planners.

The 442nd was a self-sufficient fighting force, and fought with uncommon distinction in Italy, southern France, and Germany. The unit became the most highly decorated regiment in the history of the United States armed forces, including 21 Medal of Honor recipients. The motto of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team was “Go for broke.” You can find more detail in Wikipedia. :)

As a result, Many Asian countries (such as India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippine, Laos, or so) were freed. What's more, the U.S. could not stop spreading of communism in China, and had to join in the Korean war, and the Vietnam war.

well form reading and watching certain documentaries, and stories form actual veterns, I can safely say the Iwo Jima campaign must have been hell, the footage puts it in perspective, yet I think maintaining a sense of hatred towards Japanese today because of wwII is both logical and illogical, and its weird how it works like that, I don't think all the Japanese soldiers were cowards, yet many used brutal cruel tactics, something that both sides used if they had the chance

Japan was a country that lived by the Samurai code and thats why in battle they were tenacous fighters it was a dishonor to retreat or surrender and if you did you would dishonor the code as you would tarnish your familys last name.Thats why they treated our men so cruel in Bataan when they surrendered they thought we were without honor and lower than a dog for doing so.But Thank God we rallied and whipped there ass cause they were enroute to invade the states if our Navy did not hold.

Japan I believe gave us a harder time than the Germans, German were sane and would surrender when in case but you had to kill all the Japs, Japs even had more heart than the Russians.
