In the making of this particular shoot of the film, Bette Davis was really kicking her in some parts. She "supposevly" knocked the wind out of Crawford.
The scene where Baby Jane imitates Blanche on the phone after beating her senseless is the epitome of rotten. Great acting on the part of both Bette Davis and Joan Crawford.
At the 4:04 mark it was like ohh shit. Then at the 4:25 it was ohh no and at the 4:52 mark it was pure OUCH !.It was finally over with at the 5:18 many thanks its over until the next time.Ouch!
That Dr. is such a dufus! When he first talks to Blanche, it sounds like she's on the verge of a nervous breakdown. And then, not five minutes goes by when the call is made by Jane impersonating Blanche, "Blanche" sounds so cool and calm, like she's getting ready to go to the Brady Bunch house and make cookies with them. I would've been EXTREMELY suspicious and gone over to see her. ;)
Vintage Bette! I will bet that Christina Crawford thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie, particularly the parts where Joan gets the crap kicked out of her.
@SoYahYah Nope..intro to 911 didn't start until 1968, and then implemented in each state and area as time went on (wikipedia-"911"). I remember we didn't have 911 in El Paso until (if I remember correctly) the late 80's or early '90's.
I saw in a few interviews with the cast and crew of this film, that Davis actually hurt Crawford intentionally during this scene when kicking her due to an ongoing feud the two had both prior to the film and throughout it's duration.
@sorg54 That's true. Bette Davis also had a coke machine installed on set because Joan Crawford's husband was CEO of Pepsi. Joan got her revenge by putting weights in her pockets whenever Bette had to carry her.
Davis did her own makeup because every professional she asked, when told what she wanted, feared they'd never work Hollywood again if they 'did THAT' to Bette Davis. Despite battles with Aldrich too, she insisted. Then when she first saw the finished film with Aldrich and an audience, he heard her quietly sobbing, "Did I really look THAT bad...?" Not every battle Davis won were ones she remained glad about.
I don't think the events in this movie actually happened or are real. But I think it is very loosly based off the sisters Gypsy Rose Lee and Vaudville's famous Baby June.
4:52 I heard Joan was hurt pretty badly they way Bette kicked her head. When I first saw that it I was oooh that really had to hurt. Baby Jane is crazy !! Why didn't Blanche just call the police ?
Yeah I wondered about that too. Blanche's behavior is weird sometimes. For example why she dropped the note for Ms. Bates? Couldn't she just shout?
Still, fantastic and underrated performance from Joan Crawford.
4:18-4:20 "I'm... not... sure" cracks me up everytime. Bette Davis had more powerful role and she is stunning of course but Crawford was really great also and deserved to get an Oscar nomination for that movie.
i completely agree! this film is brilliant not just because of bette's performance but also because of joan's. i don't think another actress of that time period could have matched bette's performance like joan did.
your right. it is alot more suspenseful this way. I wondered also why did blanche not scream out the window any chance she got??? their both 2 of my favorite all time actresses and i think noone will ever compete!
Bette Davis said one time "The most fun she ever had was when she push Joan Crawford down the stairs" I sometimes wonder did she wait for a stunt man? You know before pushing!!!
Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland! Both were famous stars, both are now old, and neither can stand each other. Plus, they are from the old movies era. Only problem is that none are really crazy lol.
Actually it was remade, but for T.V., Vanessa and Lynn Redgrave who are considered to be some of the best actressess in the English speaking world were chosen for the part. You'd think you'd be in store for something real good considering actresses of that calibur, they were both horrible as was the remake. A true dissapointment..
This PWNGE will go down in Hollywood history. The two top female film stars finally get their due, and bitch it out in each other's faces. Davis emerges triumphant, victorious.
:06 my grandma had that same phone, same color & all..when she got mad she would disconnect it..... when she left the house, she would take that big black phone with her, (lol) a mess!
why in the hell didn't dr shelby go by there anyway?
I read somewhere that these two women actually did hate each other in real life and in this scene, Joan Crawford needed stitches after being kicked in the head too hard by Bette Davis. To get her back Joan wore weights in her dress so that when Bette had to drag her she strained her back.
Joan Crawford brilliantly showcased the very essence of fear ...the look on her face was brilliant upon discovering Jane was listening behind her all along right at 4:06. She knoooooooows she's going to get served.
Oh my god! She done gone and kicked that bitch up side the head. A mess! I love this movie. Such superb acting. I wish actors put half as much emotion in their movies as these two great women did in this one.
@ijustlovetea I think as this film was made much earlier than Stephen King wrote the book entitled Misery: the phrase "MISERY is a lot like this movie, in some aspects" would be more appropriate.
Now I really want to see this movie. But, seriously, people need to be more proactive. She should have just held on that phone set and when Davis stood next to her BAM---right in the shins. Davis would have went down like a sac o potaters.
I agree that its shocking.but it also displays bad human emotion......and also the relationship that BD and JC had for over 40 years.....its a masterpiece
I prefer Bette Davis'act because, it's not easy to an actress permit herself to be watched as an old, decadent and disturbed mind person... Ms. Davis was very courageous to play a personage like Baby Jane (Jane Hudson)... She released of all vanity or physical beauty to did it!!!
@VictorEmmanuell :-) Ms. Davis wasn't afraid to be ugly on screen - Look at Elizabeth I or the parts of Mr. Skeffington... I admire her very much, she was able to be extremely attractive and then ...just like Baby Jane. I think we settle on this, don't we? :-)

I just saw a biography where several people who knew Joan Crawford said she was kicked in the head by Davis in the scene & had to get 2 stiches. After that, during the scene when Davis is dragging Crawford off the bed she had told her not to be dead weight as Davis had a bad back, Crawford saw this as opportunity to get back at her & went limp causing Davis to fall, & injure her back with Crawford falling on her, Davis spent 2 days in the hospital as a result.
@ClefDeDavid88 i think they could have been rivals but i dont really know if they hated each other, theres some interview where Joan talks well about Bette, sometimes the media overeacts with stars of this size
I don't see this movie as camp. I see two actresses working hard at one of the last real challenges of their career. Most of what they did after this was camp.
