Did you guys know, (don't know about the ipod touches) but with the older ipods with larger HDD's you could install mac os x onto the drive of the ipod and boot from there. Being able to live distro boots doesn't seem implausible.
this coud be possable if you boot a live main disk of linux and install it on there like a usb drive
create 1000 swap witch is 1 gb and put a ext3 filesystem on there and set as root and have grub install right beside of the ipod or what ever boot sector it not hurt to try i dont think i hope it boots like a normal computer though and dont over write the master boot record of the os but if you have one that you dont us it anymore do it or install linux completely it wont hurt to try
I thougt u could boot it up in the actual iDevice :( Like iDroid using openIboot. If there any way to make system image like those in iDroid but instead with a Linux distro?
@Uknown231231231 That's not possible. Linux uses the GNU GPL2 License, which is protected by Copyleft (Any programs made out of the code of the program must have the same license). And no. MacOS is NOT Licensed with the GNU GPL. If it was, MacOS would need to be a Free OS. While on the other hand, FreeBSD and NetBSD are licensed with the BSD License (Which is a much better license to me), which allows people to make commercial products from the code of them.
@merkur32123 Mac OS was retooled and built on the UNIX framework, the relatively low cost of the OS is mainly because it's built on opensource software. They're basically selling you documentation instead of the OS. They don't have to give it away for free. Although I believe if you're really smart you can just access the source code(which they do put up online) and compile the latest version for free(hence why we see Hack OS X and other PC ported versions of Mac OS X).
if you want to get this to work in windows.. go download universal usb installer at pendrivelinux com ... do everything he says in the video... up until he gets to the startup disk creator.. you use usb installer instead of startup creator
@Uknown231231231 -___- u know what i mean. Dont play retard. You buy computers. (or build) I didn't spell computer to save space, you have a limited amount of characters. If more HARD DISKS INSIDE OF COMPUTERS came with a linux OS such as Kubuntu or Ubuntu, it would be MUCH more popular. unless you are tech savvy, most people dont know what Linux is.
This actually has an EXTREMELY applicable use. I always have my ipod 32 gb. I partitioned 8 GB for ubuntu and now i have ubuntu where ever i go (although u need the cable, which i usually carry an extra in my car)
Nice video but I thought you would actually be able to use the screen on your iPad instead of having it basically being a flash drive. But nice video though.
@shmore Aparently that time is right now, my moms co worker bought a fucking apple server computer, a XEON(better than i7) and I got her old powerpc970 and it's worse than a pentium 4, the funny thing is that her computer was 4000$ and it runs at a feeble 1.86ghz
@1zacster Because its faster and is better organized than Windows without all the problems. If you thing windows or linux is good, you should try Mac OS X.
@MewingFugur i have used os x herd to use over complicated hard to find the right thing
i have used linux about the exact same usability as os x but with a slightly different ui and less compatibility
windows- everything is where i need it- in my start menu or desktop or done by a search right next to my start menu the only downside i have with windows is that it runs on 90% of all computers and if linux was great then why do more devices use ios than linux?
@1zacster I am only going to answer your last question because I dont want to get in a Mac vs Pc vs Linux war, even though your percent is off. I am guessing more devices run iOS because it is a mobile operating system and Linux is a computer operating system. Thats like trying to compare a desktop computer to a smartphone. They area meant for 2 different things.
@MewingFugur no im just saying if linux was a great os it would at least be used more often than iphone/ipad/ipod touch os my stance is like this os x>linux>windows
@1zacster First, I'm not attacking you or your preferences, I'm attacking your argument and nothing more. So your premise is that the greatness of an OS is determined by the number of people using it. Yet you hold that OSX is greater than Linux is greater than Windows. This is clearly backwards from your premise. Yet the market data shows that overall, Windows is used more than OSX is used more than Linux. So the data actually goes Windows>OSX>Linux.
@1zacster Thing is, I don't agree with your premise. I don't think the number of people using software makes an OS good or bad. My premise is that where ever the best software (or the software you're most comfortable using) is, that's the best OS for that individual. For me that would be Windows > Linux > OSX which fits the data. However, I do have more use for OSX than Linux, so if I went by which one I have the most use for, swap OSX and Linux. For you it's Windows > Linux > OSX and that's ok.
@1zacster Er sorry I meant for you it's OSX > Linux > Windows and that's ok. I have nor problem with that. Because it's all opinions anyway. There is no best for everyone. Just the best for you, the best for your neighbor, the best for me. And that might be different, and it should be. Competition is a good thing.
@luccaskunk if os x and linux really were that good then why does windows dominate 90% of the market share and os x having around 6% and linux having around 2%. Competition isnt necessary with windows because it can be customized to be exactly the same as any other os. so the learning curve can be just as steep as os x or linux if you want it to be. Also saying os x is better than windows is a blatant lie because apple hardware is one generation behind(about 3-4+ years) and 2x the price
@1zacster Hey, I don't disagree with you. For most people, myself included, Windows is clearly the superior choice. Although I would be using Ubuntu on my PC... IF it could run Windows programs properly. Wine does not cut it for my purposes. Until Wine can run 90-95% or more DirectX applications WITHOUT issue and WITH FULL SHADER SUPPORT, Ubuntu won't even grace my harddrive because I don't have room to spend on an OS I won't use.
@1zacster They dominate it because its a simple, easy OS. Linux and Unix are easily 100x better than Mac and Windows, because of the flexibility. Its like having an iphone, vs a jailbroken iphone. Linux may take a little more skill, but still, once you learn the basics (i did in a few min) its hellllla better
@mrapter7 you do realize osx is beased off of unix, you just said "unix is better than unix" btw i would use linux IF, keyword IF it could run the probably 90-95% of programs out there that are made for windows. and linux doesnt take skill, this isnt call of duty. Windows is simply the easiest OS out there much easier than having to do lots of computer level stuff for the noob user, its it really was as great as you say it is windows wouldnt dominate
@1zacster Ok let me restate this. I know mac and linux run on Unix. Im not retarded. Difference is: Mac is very closed. Apple is a very controlling company when it comes to users and their software. It isnt bad, it ensures a good experience. And to really get into customizing Linux, you need to be handy with the terminal. Meaning you need to know it. Be skillful with it. And, its sort of underground. If CPU's came with linux, or was commercialized, i bet it would dominate. Not hating on any OS
or you could replace ios with Debian or UBUNTU. IOS uses a Debian packager to install apps ready so the firmware is compatible. its not hard to do its just a matter of tricking itunes through the host file to think your iso is an apple server and then restore it. same method used to revert ios to an older version. it works well. just don't expect compiz to work. no 3d support. but its still pretty kool to see.
I was about to say: I like this lad. I'd buy him a pint!
But then i realized that he's not booting Ubuntu on the iPad but from the iPad.
This means: No lager for you, son. :|
