SRR (former mw who attempted to become HW champ-- but sadly fell-short) is one of the main guys. Duran as well.. (esp. in the late 70s/early 80s the boxing press really started to think)
and more recently, RJJ. He brought the concept of p4p back to the fore & from there it STUCK!
Think you will find that SRR prime was at welterweight, he moved up to middleweight and won titles but that wasn't his prime, and at no point did he fight at heavyweight, he fought for the light heavyweight title but came short due to heat exhaustion.
Duran was the most overachieving successful little fighter there's in the history thus far! a 4 different weight class champion, and think about this: after his reign at lightweight he leaped 12lbs. to challenge the best of his era at welterweight; Ray Leonard. I cant belive there are some insulting comments about Duran here. Up to the second Leonard fight he was 71-1 with 55 kos, and the one defeat was avenged twice by ko! Its true he lost a few, but when he lost he was older, and fighting past his best weight and against a lot of fighters he wouldnt train, he was just in it for the pay cheque. But when he was in his prime and up for a fight he would have given anyone from any era trouble

If you watch the Buchanan fight closely and listen for the bell you will see Ken landed two big straight punches after the bell and thats why Duran fouled him the next second on LoBianco's blind side. I always thought Duran was the total one to blame but not since I saw the tape.

Duran was the greatest small fighter I ever saw .... I just wished he had retired after beating Leonard in Montreal and ended his career at 73-1
Leonard II was a farce - sure Duran got frustrated and quit - but it was because Leonard would NOT fight - and was clowning around ... admittedly sugar ray's tactics worked but it does NOT diminish Duran's fighting ability just his mental stability. Duran went a long way to restoring his image - albeit well past his prime with wins over Moore

There are several fighters... with tremendous skill, huge hearts & iron-wills who defied weight-classes & helped pave the way for the p4p concept becoming as important as it is today! SRR (former mw who attempted to become HW champ-- but sadly fell-short) is one of the main guys. Duran as well.. (esp. in the late 70s/early 80s the boxing press really started to think)
and more recently, RJJ. He brought the concept of p4p back to the fore & from there it STUCK!

Think you will find that SRR prime was at welterweight, he moved up to middleweight and won titles but that wasn't his prime, and at no point did he fight at heavyweight, he fought for the light heavyweight title but came short due to heat exhaustion.
