  • Looks like that plane was over-loaded! Barely able to clear the runway.

  • They were built as an air ferry to transport cars and passengers across the English Channel.

  • This is so ugly. It has to be British. In fact, now when I looked it up, it actually is British :-D.

  • Im no aircraft expert, but Ive got photos of them before conversion to the ATL Carvair, and they looked like a regular aeroplane. I believe it was Ansett Australia that had them converted for hauling freight. A couple of these planes ended up in New Zealand during the eighties hauling cars for Nationwide Air (part of the Car Haulaways group),but after a few problems with the Govt. of the day they went into receivership, sold, and one of them crashed in Alaska,I heard it was hauling fuel to the mines

  • @TravellinOn2010 Yes, the Carvair was a conversion of the DC-4, done by Aviation Traders Engineering Ltd in England in the 1960s. I think the one that crashed in Alaska was this aircraft.

  • @Proplinerman Great to see a video of such a unique aircraft, thanks for posting it.

  • Deformed 747

  • boeing 747 min version? :P

  • Look slike there were two alaskan Carvairs according to wiki, both wrecked . One in 1997 , and the other in 2007. The one on Google Maps it turns out was wrecked in 1997.

  • Do a google maps search for these coordinates. Then click on satellite view 67°1'16.63"N 146°31'53.51"W You can see the wreckage of this plane there.

  • i hate russins aircrafts lol ( antonov and ATL98 ) i hate them , airbus and boeing are the best

  • ATL98 is not Russian! It's British.

  • Ugly? No way,to me is a thing of rare beauty.

  • Go find your copy of the James Bond movie, "Goldfinger"! You might see a loading of a car onto the aircraft!

  • that is the ugliest plane i've ever seen - do they use them anymore?

  • This one later crashed and only one or two now survive. I don't think either are flying, but I could be wrong.

  • N89FA ("Fat Annie") in Texas still flys cargo, the one in South Africa is being restored to fly on the airshow circuit.

  • 30 May 2007: Carvair N898AT Wrecked

It happened at Nixon Fork Mine near McGrath, Alaska. they were approaching to land, they had a tail wind and were trying to come in as slow as possible. They caught a down draft and clipped the end of the runway with the right main and the rest is self explanatory. You won't believe this but this is the second Carvair to crash up there. Along with a DC-6, DC-4 and a CASA.

  • remind me about the boeing 747, LOL:P

  • It actually inspired the idea for the 747's upper deck.

  • Same as I was thinking..

  • great to see this again i reamber them at lydd and southend when is one coming home 2 the uk?

  • Its great to see one in flight again, I worked on them at Stansted Airport in the '60s

  • Thumbs up, great video! What a shame she crashed a few days ago...

  • What? This Carvair crashed? Where? When? Why? I love these things! I wonder how many are left?

  • Yes, it crashed... unfortunately I cant post URL's here but do a google search for "n898at" and "crash"
