CATHERINE MASTIO: French soprano (1877-?): Debut (24 Mar 1899) at the Opéra-Comique as Héro in Beaucoup de bruit pour rien. She appeared as the Sandman in the first OC performance (20 May 1900) of Hansel et Gretel, and Florence in La Petite Maisson (5 Jun 1903). She also appeared at the Palais Garnier, la Monnaie, and l'Opéra de Lausanne.

I remember hearing this singer many years ago on a recording from the collection of Dick Alexander, but I know nothing else about her. Mastio's tone in this aria sounds pure and pleasant, but it's hard to tell much about her technique and artistry on the basis of one recording from an opera not currently in the mainstream repertory (or is it commonly performed in France?), though the phrasing and style are very fine. Re: Yes, it is track from TT-2206. I agree with you about "Truesound Transfers". The sound pure and distinct, clear and clean but "not genuine".

Hi Alec: TT seem different from other transfers, which brings up the question: what is correct? Is it merely a case of what we're used to? Amazing as TTs are, perhaps a certain aura, atmosphere -- a nimbus if you will (joke intended) -- is missing. In any case thank you for this... another great archival treasure! Cheers, etc. Doug --

*transformingArt* write: I have a copy this in original 78rpm. This recording sounds like an excerpt Truesound Transfer CD from Germany, is it correct? Most of the times I like Truesound Transfers results, but I was little bit dissapointed at this one since the transfer cut out most of the atmosphere that the original had.
