The characters names such as "gray fox" and "ocelot" are picked from real land mammals here on earth. Plus these are only code names towards the characters since gray fox's real name is frank jaeger, and ocelots is adamska that come from a terrorist group called foxhound.

The Solid was only added because of the "Solid" graphics meaning 3-dimensional which Metal Gear 1 and Metal Gear 2 didn't have.
