Great action!! Very nice! I just recently started to spar with rattan, and have learned a new and realistic respect for the weapons. Rattan causes pain and superfical injurys just cover exposed bones like knee, elbow, possibly forearm and shin. And just think the rattan is a pretend blade!
This was a competition 2005 before the Swedish rattan revolution. So the answer is, at that time it was not widespread to fight/sparr with rattan. The sticks that were used during training that time was hickory and trust me, you don't wanna fight with those sticks. Nowadays it is all rattan, both training and fighting.
And I agree, fighting with softsticks is no good in the end. Long live rattan! :D
