however, i wish there was a way not to add sugar...is it a vital ingredient? i mean, is it used to counter any bitterness of the other ingredients, or is it optional? because i feel the sugar counters the purpose of having a salad...

You don't have to add sugar because of the grapes their already sweet and you dont have to use lemon lol this was the Richie version of the salad. You can just use the grapes,celery nuts and mayo that's how my mom does it. without the sourcream or w/e the hell he used.

lol, I think the mayonnaise is what counters the purpose of the salad. Maybe you could use splenda

yea I did make it, and i loved it...didn't add the sugar or the lemon...you're right about the grapes being sweet enough...
