I agree with Fuzzywhe's post. Kirk was a combat captain, whereas Picard was a diplomat. Captain Kirk and his crew were the first to explore, and the universe was much more hostile then. Hence, they saw far more combat, and had much more experience when it came to fighting. Not to mention that Capt. Kirk was a brilliant military strategist. There's also no way Data could ever out-think Spock. And Geordi compared to Scotty? Puh-lease! Geordi was promoted from Helmsman. Scotty was a true engineer.

they're from two different series and times, Kirk is from the 60s star trek with spock, scotty and so on, that series plays i think around the 2260, while the new star trek from the 80s with picard is set i think about 80 years later, both good side, asnd because they are from different eras they both are captains of the enterprise.
from what i cjust read on star trek wiki it's a bit, hard to understand, but by the time of the movies spock IS a captain, but without his own ship, he still serves under kirk as first officer, just like scotty, but as i said before that's mno trekkie for me.

from what i cjust read on star trek wiki it's a bit, hard to understand, but by the time of the movies spock IS a captain, but without his own ship, he still serves under kirk as first officer, just like scotty, but as i said before that's mno trekkie for me.

Well, if Kirk is mentioned in the series that play decades after his heroic death (in film 7) he's generally regarded as the greatest captain of them all, and in film 7 ImO it was clear that Kirk is the favorite of them, like Kirk gets a line like (are you going to reire soon? or something like that) because picard looks so old.
and that film was even produced by the producer of the picard tv series, and written by him and two longtime writers of that show, so, everybody loves kirk.

This is a joke. Kirk is an incompetent fool. The only thing this video shows is his lack of ability to make appropriate decisions under high stress situations. Please realize the shoot first ask later is NOT an admirable quality for a captain to possess.

picard vs kirk is irrelevant. fictional characters in made up scenarios. Anyone with half a brain knows that Patrick Stewart is a top noch actor whose abilities put shatner to shame. Shatner was a no where actor who got one lucky shot and never accomplished ANYTHING BEYOND Star Trek. he could afford to be a bad actor in a show like the original star trek. Stewart on the other hand, well his accomplishments speak for themselves. (and btw, Picard would own Kirk anyday)

Ok people just because something is first does not make it better. Next Gen is clearly better. The characters are better and the captain isnt a total douchebag who fires at any thing he sees. Picard on the other hand tries to reason with the enemy before attacking them.

Yeah, I suppose if you had a situation where the Enterprise-D had no weapons and no shields, while the Enterprise-A/B did, then Kirk could beat Picard.
If you reversed the situation, of course, the D would plow through the A/B without even scratching the hull.

I so disagree with this! Kirk was known for shooting first, but not when the other ship did nothing to antagonize him! I have never seen an episode of tos where kirk just randomly attacked some ship. Starfleet says no authorized starfleet ship in the sector so he blows it up without even hailing them first? imho, this made kirk look like a bad guy and picard look like a fool.

@timothy1701 That's why Kirk would prevail in battle. In any battle whoever takes initiative and lands their shots first has a clear advantage, especially with highly advanced technological weaponry. Picard on the other hand is horrifically incompetent in battle as shown in "Where Silence Has Lease" when a romulan warbird attacks their ship. After suffering a very damaging volley of torpedo hits his only response is: "Warn them we'll return fire." After another volley, he fires but ONE shot.

Kirk is always in the thick of things, whereas Picard never does anything really heroic. True, he plays the good guy, but overall, it's Riker who goes into danger and fixes it.

Yes, 1701D has more things inside, definitely looks cooler than the wonderfully cheesy 1701, but maybe, with all that was done on the inside, they didn't make it any better or stronger on the outside.
Of course, I really don't care if you think 1701D is better. She's really ugly, but I can accept the fact that some people feel her better, stronger, or more efficient.
Picard vs. Kirk on the other hand...
