Why would a dead body NOT decay or decompose? What purpose does it serve? I don't understand this; is it even really a person? Is this true? What is the truth behind it? I am only asking because I have never seen, or heard, anything like this before, and would like to know more about it. Much appreciated; thanks.
@dustymiller65 All bodies will decay eventually over time, but depending on environmental factors, the decomposition process can be slowed tremendously.
@PhysStud2006 Ah, yes...they did say that they "pickled" him. Now I get it . I thought that there might have been some other magical (spritual) reason for this too. Of course, it's hard to imagine someone just sitting down and dying like that on purpose. It's a bit weird. Thanks for you info.
@dustymiller65 Yah I'm pretty sure that this monk was embalmed. However, in some cases, intense heat can cause a body to mummify even without embalming procedures. There have been cases where individuals have died in their homes, only to be discovered several months or years later in a mummified but somewhat well preserved state. Check out the "franklin expedition mummies" here on YouTube. They are amazingly well-preserved but quite disturbing to view as well so view at your own risk;)
"Luang Pho Daeng (also Loung Por Daeng and Loung Pordaeng) was a Thai Buddhist monk who died while meditating during the mid-1980s.[1][2] His body, which has not decomposed, but remains in a mummified state, is on display at the Wat Khun Aram temple on Ko Samui island in Thailand's Surat Thani Province."
Hahahahahahha Funnny! yeah he was really mummified like that i guess the shades were an added bonus. what would have been funny is if they were d and g's or pradas lol
@frankensteinmoneymac and everyone who watch this vid. As I'm Thai and also Buddhism. Let me tell you this "All Buddhism through out this world can't stand with your joke. It's rude!
We are highly respect to our monks and the Lord Buddha. As they are our great teacher and a great decent person of the world.
If you are a citizen of any civilize country, plese behave like one.
People with normal sense of manner can understand the whole thing with out me saying any.
@SolKiLittleSun That's actually quite sad that you can't find lighthearted humor to be a positive thing. All the Buddhist Monks that I've known (and believe it or not, there have been quite a few) have always been open to humor of all kinds, and would never hold on to anger over such a silly joke. If you are engaging in such judgmental perceptions over such a lighthearted joke then I dare say, that perhaps you are not very far along in your path towards enlightenment. Peace, to you my friend.
Everywhere where Buddhism produced great masters you'll see these kinds of mummified monks who passed away in meditation. They have achieved great achievement and the left their body in this state to give teaching to future generations. They can be found in China, Tibet, and Japan as well.
@joey143anna YUP! I couldn't believe it my self. when i saw it but alot of people are telling me now hes ears fell off and he has no more shades.... guess i got it at the last min. enjoy and subscribe to Kareem tv thanks.
thai i amazing. i'm not born in Thailand, but my parants are and i'm visiting Thailand often and it is my fav country, i have visited many others like spain. i have family and now i'm just beginning. i have seen many things like this, shadows with color, kumantong, and many other stuff. my friends was shocked when they saw that
@happysexytime good point. And yes they are real shades.... i couldn't believe it when i saw it but alot of people are telling me now hes ears fell off and he has no more shades.... guess i got it at the last min. enjoy and subscribe to Kareem tv thanks.
There are a number of mummified monks in Japan that are similarly displayed. The monks in Japan actually mummified themselves. There is a new book on the subject called "Living Buddhas: The Self-Mummified Monks of Yamagata, Japan" (McFarland, 2010), by Ken Jeremiah. Check it out...it's interesting...
@miirabutsu How does one go about mummifying oneself? Or do you mean that after they died, the other Monks mummified them? The book does say 'Self-Mummified' which leads me to think the first option is true.....none the less I am pretty curious as to how one could possibly accomplish such a trick! A special diet perhaps?
We were there last week and he had no sunglasses but there were other "things" in the way, which reflected the light. So we only could see his head and a bit of his torso. O.o
in thai there r mani monks who obtain arahant, when they die they r nt rotten..one of de moz famous is in hap zai,wat pako, long pu tong..body abt 80yrs,stil nt rotten, hair n nails stil growing..u should go visit, its a eye openin ;p

@3eyeandy The reason why the hair and nails grow after death is that the skin shrinks and flesh shrinks, because water is drained away and the tissue dries up. The hair and nails appear longer then. That's why some corpses are suspected to be vampires because they keep growing after death.
Did he die in that position?
