  • If he hits someone on something hard such as a shield, the sword will bend and become useless.

  • cotton = flag or tassel

  • I'm glad he started with the basics, turns out I've been holding the broadsword the wrong way up. Now my hands bleed less!

  • with swords i do prefer the katana but because of its sharpness and strength. One does not have to use a katana like you are clothed in heavy armour like in kendo. The katana as Master Musashi pointed out in the Book of Five Rings can be used one or two handed. In my training I combine Takeda style Batto-Ryu Kenjutsu with Filipino Eskrima and Shao-Lin methods for a unique if not interesting hybrid fencing style.

  • Monk dude rox!

  • chop johnny :D

  • he uses a bendy sword because it's practice people not because he is 'retarded' like some of your comments say

  • @Filiostoutheou probably the people who complain about the bendy practice sword are retarded, just saying...:)

  • whos gunna teach us all about the rain

  • his English is too cute

  • Handle=Hilt and Handles Protection=Guard

  • @lookingaround234 actually the "protection" is the hilt and btw if you're thinking of the end of the handle, its called the pummel

  • @Midnighter169

    *Pommel, you mean?

  • @lookingaround234 Protection=condom

  • Oooooh so you hold the handle, not the blade. That's where I've been going wrong..

  • no disrespect, but i do not think he was using the terms correctly, he called two different parts of the weapon a "Handle" he got one right, but the second was the "Guard" the "Guard" protects your hand... and the base of the Handle is called the "Pommel" of the weapon, i think. i am not an expert, i could be wrong. i thought he was going to go into the history of this weapon. instead it seemed like he was giving a vague outline of the weapon. oh well Xp

  • Speak up Captain obvious !

  • Right here we have the handle... *,,*.. right here we have th e handle

  • @jjcool53211 it is wiggly cuz it is a training sword he could use a real sword but accidents happen to all of us evan the greatest of martial arts masters

  • 0:56 brain fart

  • i can't hear anything

  • lol 0:54 "...forgot what i say"

  • enough talk wheres the action

  • i love broadsword!! i plan getting one for my class soon

  • he actually had to think about what the handle was called

  • If you would want to buy a broadsword like that would that be spring or wushu steel?

just wanted to know because Iam going to buy one, but I often see the spring is less flexible than wushu steel. then why would people want to buy the wushu steel if it is more flexible than the spring steel broadsword?

  • What does the orange represent?

  • Gah stop running your hand along the sharp bit of the blade!

  • i don't think this guy knows what hes talking about >_>

  • It's not the "Handle that protects your hand," it's called a hilt, dumb ass!!

  • @technowizard123 It's a guard, actually. The handle is the hilt.

  • @Dissident13245 Technowizard123, doing a great job being an internet jerk...

  • no actually the flimsy wobbly swords are an invention which came into being together with the new wushu style of kung fu. The art form, you know high jumps, summersaults big movements, it's not traditional and no one ever fought with those kinds of swords it's for show.

  • Katana all the way

  • ur dumb

  • No, but a lot of youtube viewers/commenters are

  • A real broadsword is much thicker, also much heavier, in fact it is so heavy that it is quite clumsy to practice with, that is why the thin, shaky training swords are used.

  • why that blade is shaking all the time?

  • The blade is "shaking" because it is extremely thin. It's like foil.

  • and because it's a training sword i think? right me if im wrong!

  • that is not a real blade, it's just a fake thing for training

  • its supposed to "cut the air" instead of breaking it, take note theres a great difference, cut its to go trough, and to break its to waste energy on trying to hit something when the air is stopping you.

  • Its a foil practice sword. This means its not a real sword. The real broad sword designed to kill wont shake like that.

  • @rex1KILLER because buddhism forbid killin so this dao will not be designed to kill

  • Hey isn't the true fighting broadsword like sturdier and heavier to do more cutting damage?

  • Yes, martial artists use them usually unsharpened. It's actually called A dao.

  • A dao is the unsharpened one?Ok but if you train with the true fighting broadsword would it make a difference if I use the dao..logicallly it would be easier for me with the dao?

  • Yes, the one Bruce has is called a "sheng du", it's intentionally very thin for show. Also, on certain cutting and especially one thrusting or stabbing strokes, it makes a "snapping" sound which also rings a little afterward.

  • i dont think so, if you ever get one of these broadswords like on this vid in your hands, try cutting an apple :P wanna bet it'll slice

  • the broadsword is meant for training in the Dao, its lighter weight allows you to make fluid motions and its wobble is so you can train on making persises strikes, if you perfect the broadsword your Dao skill will be very good I know I train in the Dao

  • For those of you that don't understand, this is a blade for wushu demonstrations, not an actual combat-ready blade. The dao swords intended for combat were and are much, much less wobbly and heavier.

  • In the video it show that the sword is very weak as it is flopping around as you move it! That is not a sword of my chosing, to me is would seem like it would bend or eventually snap cause of the weak design!

    Thats my opinion on it!

  • a sword does not only have to be about strength and toughness... but thats your opinion... i can respect that.

    Cheers.

  • Well thank you but i only see a few qualities of a sword if it is not strong!

What in your opinion would be good about a sword as this that is made out of that kind of steel and would be flopping around when in combat?

  • I myself love a strong straight sword... but the monks initially practiced martial arts not to kill, but to hurt as self defense.

But... ur right... even i fail to see clearly how this can work in combat application. Cheers.

  • I do also, like a Katana not because everyone talks about them but the time and effort that it takes to make a handmade one! ALso i really like an arabic recurve sword like seen in the movie the Mummy! I personally really enjoy arabic style swords and knives because that is there culture, they dont go out and fight with guns, they fight with swords and knives and it is passed down through there culture on how to fight and make them so i really respect there culture in that way!

  • True man... i wish we still had days when vigor meant actual inner fibre... gone are those days with colonization... but yeah... the folded, merged and hand made steel of a katana definitely is one of my favs too, i love its longish handle... makes for good handling. And of course... the sabers... they're amazing too.

oh and btw... my fav weapon is the staff... maybe iron clad on one end to give it enuf dip... but i love the staff... it is seriously a weapon of oneness.

    reminiscing d past :)

  • Good my man but i prefer titanium steel blade with platinuim core. Also if you can touch with naked hand the blade without get cut its not blade for me. Heavy sword can cut your sword, your armor, shield and you in half with single medium power strike.

  • i dislike heavy swords.

    that is all.

  • lolz "it is often used to chop" XD, but much respect to this guy hes the man...

  • Floppy swords are used for demonstration purposes.

Truthfully, you can't say which is better on the katana broadsword argument. The Chinese Broadsword is definitely more skillful, arguably, and definitely more flashy, but the katana has a simple, straight forwardness about it. Both aren't something you want to be on the business end of.

Besides, three section staffs are better anyway =P

  • The Katana is the best sword on earth. It's been proven over and over again that the katana has a superior design and the way its built gives it an edge.

The broadsword is strong, flexible, and powerful but when it comes to the katana, there's no contest.

    Love Shaolin Broadsword form...

  • @fbi10 katana is best for light armoured warrior but not designed for heavy armour worn by ancient europe knights. this 'best sword would break if fighting with a heavy boardsword...

  • Probably, i don't know. They'll have to do a test like this one

    watch?v=fxYvwEnKRjA

But with fighting a heavy broadsword? I wouldn't believe for a second that a heavy broadsword would "break" a katana..

  • Shouldn't it be more solid, or is that just the design. Wiggles alought.

  • no, REAL saber of that style is folded steel, of three-plate, inserted edge, or occasionally wrapped steel construction. The practioner here probably can't find a place to obtain a real saber, does not have the money to buy a quality saber, or isn't skilled enough to handle a live weapon. Traditional Chinese swords are "flexible" due to the differential or thorough heat treatment..but not like floppy flexible.

  • Same with their staffs...

  • the staff this guy uses is diferent... monks advance their staff techniques to cudgels and spades etc... thats probably the reason why they keep their staff tapered only from one side... it has a thin end that is flexy and a butt thats not...

  • @xxHotSpicyxx actually its a practice broadsword. I had one at my martial arts studio, and the practice swords were always floppy

  • @xxHotSpicyxx TRAINING WEAPON

  • this dudes awesome!

  • both weapons have different positives and negatives. avoid using 'better'. in the hands of skilled artists both will kill in the blink of an eye.

i've been in combat with both weapons, they both inspire the same fear!!

  • i must disagree as well... i've used a dao on multiple occasions to the disadavantage of a katana user.... i've also done the oposite... your mind is the weapon everything else is just a tool...

  • @perculti for sure

  • im going to berate myself later for using such a cliche, but a weapon is only as good as its user. its all about the training, the environment, etc. its your knowledge of the weapon and your opponent that makes a difference, not the weapon itself.

  • lmfao

  • thank you for the introduction

  • @cupcake

Its a broadsword made for training.

To minimize the risk of injuring yourself

and to make it lighter, it is made of soft,

    htin stealth.

  • this is a wu shu performance broadsword.

training swords are thicker less flexable but still perfectly balanced.

  • it's well documented in the chinese army that tassles where never EVER used on swords. Private kung fu schools could have used tassles but never for imperial military combat. Swords where instead often had a lanyard that secured your sword to your wrist. Making it less likely that you would lose your weapon.

  • oh sweet! where did you buy it? ive been thinking about learning how to use this. its pretty neat.

  • why is it so floppy?

  • because this is a 'wushu' broadsword, not a real one.

I just bought a 'combat steel' broadsword for about $40. It is unsharpened, but not floppy.

I think people should train with combat steel broadswords because they are stiff and heavy, not light and floppy.

  • the reason its "floppy" is it helps the beginning student to know if hes doing a skill correctly like in a slash the blade will remain still and not wobble in a stab it will make a pop sound if you do these skills right the blade will tell you, but training with a combat steal sword after you have mastered these skills is a good idea

  • I must disagree. Wushu swords are flopped around to produce sound on purpose. It adds to the drama and flash of the presentation. It is an interesting concept that you propose, but in common practice nowadays, it is used for show.

  • while the sound does ephisies (spell check) power its only ment to make sounds at certain times unlike in martial arts films lol if you check out wushu forms youl see that at some parts like slashes the blade will remain still showing that the slash was true and right on target but you do bring up a good point my friend

  • its made to tell if its done correctly my master said if it makes noise you arent doing it correctly

  • i thought they called the cotten thing a tassel

  • Yes, they are called tassels, and are used for decoration, to distract one's opponent, and maybe as a lanyard or even as a weapon itself as for some believe that it was originally made of sharpened wire.

  • ouch, u wouldnt wanna get hit with the wire then.

  • Tassels are mostly used for straight swords, what he is talking about was used for keeping blood out of the warriors face

  • tassle is the one on a straight sword that has little strings the one that goes on a broadsword is a square peice of fabric called a sash

  • the cotton for the bs view & its like a camoflage to confuise enamy with some moves

  • we know how to cut and what the cotton is for, were not retarded

  • Funny...in the ones for the katana, they call it sword a katana, but in this video they call it a broadsword. Now I don't know what you guys call it, it's always been either a 'dao' or 'dou', meaning knife, for me.

  • umm if i read the correctly that means u think that this is a katana. its nothing like a katana. Katanas are the coolest looking sword and probably deadliest

  • Im sorry if it's not clear. I mean't that in videos for the katana, and I can tell the difference, they call it different than its original name and the same thing is happenning here too.

  • Actually, they're equally as deadly as any other sword, it was material and the way it's forged that made a Katana, strong. Not deadly but it would not break, look up tests done on a ten-thousand fold Katana. The Katana, was not like a god among swords, while yes, the way it is used does provide enhanced cutting and hacking. the same can be achieved with a longsword, or even a hand-and-a-half sword.
