  • Is that Jesse Cook? That's some good taste you got there.

  • Looks like 38 people tried this with an SSD

  • fucking.. WHY XD

  • Такое реализовать сможет любой начинающий радиотехник тупо подсоединив к моторам усилитель...

  • mountain dew llegó hace muy poco a mi pais, y ahora lo veo con discos duros...

  • put a sub in it

  • the first song sounds oddly like wizards and warriors...

  • SSD's have much better sound quality...

  • Check it up, funk it up.

  • They need to do this on Big Bang Theory

  • I think its funny that this is probably cheaper to do than buying an old record player which does essentially the same thing

  • Dolby True HDD

  • THX 7.1

  • Nice Katamari music.

  • MOUNTAIN DEW IS GOD'S GIFT TO HUMANITY. IT CAN EVEN AMPLIFY SOUND!

  • use beer cans, trust me, it will sound better...

  • it's real dumb ass

  • How does it work?

  • Product placement FTW!

  • im selling my SPEAKERs, uh i mean hard drives, good price, i make good deal!!! lol

  • FAKE u_u

  • twice the bulk half the sound quality.

  • dude, the fact that you actuely made this is fucking amazing, i didnt think this was possible to do this with hard drives! O.O

  • The Moon and the Prince being played on five hard disks. Beautiful.

  • FAKE

  • @xakerkiris NOT fake... maybe the part with the mountain dew cans but one of my good friends made a pair of hdd speakers that worked really well.

  • biGGER OUTdated hdd FOR WOOFER AND MP3 PLAYER FOR TWEETER

  • @RoboticusMusic mp3 player hdd I meant.

  • Guys i got a new HDD and when i play my electric guitar i can hear some Weird sounds coming trough my guitar amp... i think its the sound of my HDD.. i need some help !! how can i stop that sound ??!!

  • @dll360 If your guitar plugged in the same outlet/breaker/fuse as your computer?

Your house may not be grounded, mine isn't and I pickup a radio station from my pc through the audio jack unless I unplug the computer monitor and attach the ground pin to the ground on my mixer.

    Try a different outlet

  • I laughed my ass off when I saw the mountain dew cans

  • I have a 5.25" FH harddisk with 8 platters, 15 heads. Maybe that one can be used as a subwoofer :-P

  • Interesting HDD drives transformed to speakers!

  • its pretty easy to understand. if im correct, hard disk use magnitism to store info. and speakers use magnitism as wheel. so that means hard drives can be used as speakers. its more interesting than praticle.

  • @tjl1297 the needle just vibrates.

  • Katamari Damacy 4 teh win!

  • Hi

Did you just attach the mountain dew cans to the platters?

  • Huge lol!

  • Lol! I bet the was nothing wrong with the majority of those drives! Be honest now!!

  • What if U mouted the HDD speakers inside a ressonace box, like a speaker box or a like a classic guitar. I bet that low freq. would be heard. Cool idea m8!

  • @RMPCTek That's basically what the cans are; they simply happen to be on top of the arm as opposed to the whole device being inside a box.

  • awesome! Ever since seeing the CNC Christmas music video from some link on CNCZone, I've been impressed with people's ability to make music out of anything..Now if I could get my vinyl cutter to sing, (or to speak) that'd be cool cuz it's really loud, and it would spook me - even tho I'd tell it whatt to say/sing/play!!

    -ThorsFoundry

  • what did you use for resetting the arm? Springs/rubber bands or else?

    Nice Project btw!

  • mount n dew solves all problem

  • mount n dew solves all problem

  • on a long journey to Mars, this will keep passengers from going mad.

  • you have made a new instrument and saved the environment at the same time. I am impressed.

  • Wow nice. :D

  • even if it's fake or nor, it still is FUNNY!!!

    nice man!

  • how do you nake them??????????

    i want one!!lol

  • now for a HDD subwoofer! :D

  • i hear katamari =)

  • very creative, man ^.^

  • lol improved. Imagine you come home and cant turn on your pc and see that your Hdd's are made into speakers . and you ask WTF just happened ?? And the answer is I IMPROVED THEM!!!!!

  • LOL the mountain dew cans xD

  • einfach geil

  • FerralVideo how the hell am i suppose to make the platters spin? obviously you haven't tried it

  • It's simple. Just apply power to the hard drive, and they should spring right to life. A setup like my MAP-80 is useful for this.

If they don't run, try spinning them by hand and make sure they aren't jammed.

If they start, then stop, you've got a drive that doesn't like having its head stack disconnected!

  • soll ich das glauben oder ist das ein fake???

  • das ist kein fake hab selbst welche gebaut vl. host ich bald auch man nen vid

  • Ich würde gerne sehen, wenn Sie fertig sind. (=

  • Wow, what a futuristic looking Victrola!

  • I know for sure this is not fake. Why? I did it myself.

    Where to put the wires?

I advise disconnecting the PCB from the head stack first.

Then, find the wires that go to the voice coil - it's between the high strength magnets.

Connect your wires in a convenient solder landing in that wire path.

Extra credit: Power up the drive, and run your "speaker" with the platters spinning! (Some drives may not like this.)

  • Instead of putting a fucktard answer, why dont you try making one for yourself.

If you cant then dont be bullshit because you havent tried it.

  • do the dew :))))

  • lol @ the captcha I had to put in PIGHOGR.

that sounds awesome, I made one and it sounda fantastic. better than my older one which I accidently ripped the ribbon cable while trying to remove the heads so it would sound better. then I tried tapping right on the coil wires and that failed. its ok I had other HDD's kickin around.

  • This is awesome.

I'm amused that such advanced technology is fitted out to sound and act like an early phonograph.

  • Yeah i know it\s fantastic.

p.s. - i'm glad someone other than me uses the word phonograph and not "record player"

  • Actually, I use record player to refer to any turntable made after 1960. A phonograph, to me, is what's in the old RCA logo.

  • Isnt that second song on katamari

  • Yes. The songs are listed in the video information window (hit "more info").

  • ROCKS!

  • lol do the dew :)))

  • You must have been jumping off the wall after drinking so much MtDew

  • I'm sorry, but of late I've been getting a large number of comments that only say "fake". While this project is real, I respect your right to an opinion, and if you want to explain why you think this is fake, that is fine. However, if you are simply posting one word, which has already been disproved earlier, your comment will be removed. Thanks for understanding.

  • When someone says fake, you know that your creation is either too good or plain fake.

  • Fake? I made a HDD speaker as well. Works fine, easy to build and quite impressive. I can only agree with you, delta1999.

If someone think its a fake, just try yourself.

  • you need a big foot hard drive as your base

  • the only thing missing is a subwoofer...

    :p

  • This is even cooler because you used Katamari music.

  • Wow!

  • where's the sub?

  • Unfortunately, I didn't have any hard-drives from 1956.

  • LOL nice

  • awesome XD

  • how and wherwe to connect the wires

  • It's even cooler because, with the top cover off it looks almost like a miniature turntable.

  • This is pure win.

  • That's amazing, well done. Great video!

  • haha, 5.0 Surroundsound

  • Dolby Digital 5.1 (GB)

  • Yeah! Musical RAID babeh!

  • WOWOWOW!

I was first amazed with the hdd speaker. Then I peed in my pants when I was the surround 5 version!! TRUE GEEKNESS! WIN!

  • LOLOLOL cans!!!!!

  • so cool lol!

  • Very creative... well the voice is heard and brightness....

  • Holy crap. Did you know your "channeling" Thomas Edison?! Just kidding, nice work.

  • lol the middle hard drive is a samsung

i got a exactly same one and made it in to a speaker too

  • gotta love sound its life :)

  • DO THE DEW!!

  • Dolby True HD!!!

  • actually, dolby true HDD!

  • @vargasenator Dolby True HDD!!!

  • @sikor02 haha! xD

  • @sikor02 i see what you did there... meh

  • the rememinded me of an old gramophone at the end.

  • Is that actually possible?

  • KATAMARI

  • i did one .....it workd

  • Wizards And Warriors ftw!

  • MOUNTAIN DEW FTW!!!

  • hot damn thats cool!!!!!

  • 0:37 nice phonograph hard disk!

  • That is seriously F****D up dude!

  • 0:41 haha!

  • Actually it hasn't much to do about the wattage. It's more about the actual voltage, since the iPod only gives a signal just about line-level. You will need an amplifier so the voltage can be raised to about 5-10 volts. Remember ohms law?

If you messure at the wirepoints of the harddrive, you should get about 12 ohm, which is ok for an amplifier. Don't connect it to a new amplifier if the resistance is below 2 or above 16 ohms, it could damage the amplifier!

  • Now if we calculate, 12 volt / 12 ohm = 1 Amp

12 volt * 1 Amp =12 watt, the harddrive should therefore be able to play hearable sound at this level.

    Now a line level would be: 0,3 volt / 12 ohm = 0,025 Amp. 0,3 volt *0,025 Amp = 0,075 watt.

That would be an extremely low sound!

  • Informative and dribble inducing. or something.

  • Yay Katamari

  • this kinda reminds me of when i laughed at my friend for playing asteroids on his PS3 ... pretty ironic.

  • nonononono! that cant be real! is it?

  • A modern day Grammy Phone. I love it!

  • Fuck yeah, Katamari Damacy music.

  • Awesome!!

  • can you hook it up directly to the ipod jack

  • Theoretically you could if you attached the right jack to the wires, however I doubt an iPod would have enough wattage to move the arm on the hard-drive (which is what causes the sound). If you ran the iPod into an amplifier first, it should work fine.

  • you used moutain dew as your speaker? that is so funny:D

  • an awesome way to impress someone and to have a cool time building something

  • hmm, i have an old 200mb hard drive here wich i cant use in my pc, maybe i can do this and show all my friends.... I wonder what would happen if i had my pc hooked up to the stereo the hdd was attached to and played half life 2....

  • This is weird

  • the fuck?

  • I can see why you would do this, but still... why would you do this?

  • Wouldn't you? =p

  • cool

  • they are essentially 21st century gramophones.

    AWESOME.

  • I laughed with this, amazing, surround sound on hdd's rofl

  • May I suggest something, its louder when the needle is near the larger area of the disk and also if you had it so the can was in line with the needle.

  • whats the second song PLEASE !

  • It's "The Moon And The Prince" by Akitaka Tohyama, Kenji Ninuma.

You can find it on the ytmnd soundtrack volume 7.

  • I disagree..... this looks so classy in my trailer!!!

  • That is the most ghetto thing I've ever seen.

  • awesome!

  • LOL!! hahaha thats awesome! I love the MTDEW cans to help, pure genious!

  • very nice :))

  • well that is sure interesting sounds like a really old gramophone

  • I think that epitomizes the saying "everything old is new again".

  • well its a nice way to reuse stuff i guess.... which im all for..... currently im trying to make a hdd arm move a lazer pointer about but having minor problems with lazer burnout....

  • OMG WTF??????

  • haha que bueno xD enserio, está muy bien ;)

  • coo , how does it do this ?

  • The linear motor of the drive reader arm is a lot like the voice coil in a speaker. It just vibrates and turns the electrical impulses from the amplifier into sound. Its effectively turning it from one form of transducer to another.

  • battery cans would have sounded much better... ^^

  • This is really a mountain dew ad in disguise!

  • "Drink Mountain Dew and your hard-drives will sound better!"

  • lol, i'ma build me some of them :D

  • wut is the point of doing this not to be mean

  • To have fun?

  • oh lol i really didnt know why ppl do that lol

  • That is kick ass!!!!

  • The music in 0:48 is from Jesse Cook from the album Gravity with the title Mario Takes A Walk. Really nice music. :)

  • xP mountain dew cans galore

  • i found my next stero system

  • he is rich or ...

  • They were all dead hard-drives, some of which were 6 or more years old. (=

  • i see

  • XD

    lol rly nice

    :D

  • cool! i know what to do or at least try with my old hard disks

  • Intriguing method of amplificating the sound off the servo motor of those harddrives with those Dew cans XD Yes folks, it actually works; it's just a different implementation of speaker technology... Thinking outside of the box. The impressive wow factor for your friends when they cruise over is enough to set 5 HDDs up like this, but it's also a Green Solution, as what you see is 5 HDDs that are being reused instead of going to the Landfill! Onward to Goog up some schematics and instructions..

  • What was the capacity on those hard disks?. This could get expensive hehe.

  • its actully real

  • I'll admit, it was kind of funny. But only one problem with the set up. You have arms like an old record player does, but the disk isn't moving. I don't see how this can actually work. I'd have to build one myself before I actually believed it.

  • The disc has nothing to do with the sound, it is the sound of the vibration of the arm swinging on the motor that puts off all of the audio. Records work on an entirely different mechanic, which would involve a needle picking up grooves on the disc and translating them to the audio output... all of our "information" comes from the cables hooked to the motors.

That being said, I do by all means encourage you to make their own. They are a wild sight to see in-person. (=

  • thats funny

  • how???

  • Man I would so love to have some of those

  • gona be a short n sweet post. SH*T HOT

  • did Pepsi sponser this or something? :P
