@sabotazfats You need to listen to You Enjoy Myself, Reba, Run Like an Antelope, Harry Hood...most of each those songs are composed, not jamming. Listen to Phish's rendition of Donna Lee. If you don't think they're incredibly interesting after hearing those songs, that's fine. Go listen to something else. Don't post after hearing one cover.

@sabotazfats Also, none of their stuff sounds like the Dead. The only thing they have in common with the Grateful Dead is that they would improvise. They don't always do it for extended periods...sometimes it's just 12 bars or so...nor do they always improvise. Sounds like you're a fan of Ween who's pissed because some other band enjoys their music and wanted to play it. Go be smarmy somewhere else until you give both bands a fair listen.

Man I have to say I love Ween, Dean and Gene are great, but Phish are on a whole other level of musicality. Regardless of whether you like the band or not, if you can't appreciate Phish's musical talent then you're either ignorant, closed minded, or deaf. This is a great song, but musically it's not exactly complex and I don't understand how anyone can equate this cover to "butchering" the song. I'd love to see Ween try to cover of Reba, YEM, David Bowie, Hood or the like without butchering it

Also, don't get me wrong I have a ton of respect for Ween and what they've accomplished, I just prefer Phish. Phish played this song because they like the song, and it shows their respect for Ween, respect that I'm sure is mutual. Ween fans have nothing to get defensive about, they're both great bands and which is better is all a matter of opinion.

I think my main problem with the Phish version of this song is 1) I have been listening to the Ween version for years now and it's tough to hear someone else play it, and 2) i personally think this version just deosn't have the bounce and looseness of the Ween version. And it irritates me when people think this is a Phish song and give Ween no props, same as when people think Watchtower was a Hendrix song. Ya dig?
