I'm not into rap at all. The music that he writes either comes from the heart or the soul. Pure genius. What I don't understand is why people are into rap. Rap has almost no singing in it. It's just people saying the words that they found off of billboards.
Not necessarily. By that judgment, all good music would be popular, and it just isn't. There are entire realms of music that most people don't listen to, but is still quality music.
It's great that Paul was able to appeal to his generation through his songs. Today, if I were to release my songs, they'd be battered down because the culture is into rap and hip-hop when that's not what I write. So many aspiring composers aren't recognized. It must have been nice to grow up in the sixties when your music was accepted! I think the artist must struggle to fit into the time and trend a society sets for a standard. This is why I'm an academic composer at Cal State.
Why don't you release your songs and see what happens? Not everybody likes rap and hip-hop and those people may enjoy your music. When Simon & Garfunkel brought out their albums there was no other music like it and there still isn't and that is their appeal.
It's been a while since I posted this. Although I'm still partially on the fence about my position, I've kind of changed. I know now that I can get my songs licensed through BMI. From there, performers could play them. At least, I'll be recognized as a writer doing that.
I have heard many people say that some of the old styles of music are coming back in bits and pieces. I had a discussion with a family member and they said that I could be one of the ones who brings that music back. There should be more artistic expression in music and we should bring back the innocence that was so long ago. I play at open mic nights here at the university and my songs seem to be getting some appeal.
@wildpianoman16 i mean this to be encouraging - but your culture is into more than rap and hip hop. don't sell yourself or your generation short, and don't make yourself a martyr or hide behind cynicism and words like 'academic'. people are always looking for and listening to good music. i listened to some of your music, there's a lot of potential there, and some beautiful stuff, but you've got a lot to learn. keep studying your craft and getting better. and write about the things you know.

This man is a true genius. Still he sounds so humble.... Still with a glimpse of wonder how it all developed to this great legacy he made.

Great stuff...It's also great when she asks him a brief question and then gives him the floor.

If "Bridge Over Troubled Water" had been written last week, it would still be accepted and be a chart buster because it is good music.
