@SuperJox Well it's not explicitly marked in the part (like a lot of contra parts) but I'm fairly certain Strauss intended the fourth trombone to be a contrabass. I could be wrong though.
I mean no disrespect, but as a musician myself who has studied this piece (and having heard this performance in its entirety) I can't help but feel that Maestro Järvi rushed through this piece as if he had a broad waiting for him in his dressing room.
Great 'tutti'-sound, but in general everything in this version sounds a little hasty, so it lacks the grandeur that this piece needs. Also too many french horn players don't master their parts. My former teacher plays the contrabass trombone here, but unfortunately there is no balance in the trombone section and the contrabass trombone stands out too much. The trumpets play out of tune... Well, I might not make myself popular in The Hague with this comment, but the recording doesn't lie I'd say.
@mdenero Sorry mate, but the Berlin Phil with Karajan is the closest thing to musical perfection with this piece that ive heard, but we are all entitled to our opinion.
normally i'd say i love contrabass trombone, but in this case, this man has to stop farting into his instrument and the other trombones are too quiet!

remember a tv advertising: at an orchestra a trumpeter played faster than the others, after he had finished he jumped up and shouted: "First!"

I wonder why there's always a contrabass trombone when its never marked for it. It's just a pedal G and low C

@Leoboy729 Totally agree with you there mate, this piece sounds a bit rushed and would have sounded much better slowed down a touch.

@ItsallaboutTrevor San Francisco Symphony Symphony conducted by Herbert Blomstedt on Decca/London is by far the best rendition. Truly magnificent!
