I didn't hate Gerald Ford, and I'm definitely a 'leftist' compared to anyone that lionizes him. He was very much an advocate of right wing causes, but I always felt that he was one of the very, very few, who actually had a little integrity. He came to the presidency at a time when the country was in a shambles due to the crimes of Nixon et al, and he helped heal the wounds of the nation. I don't think Cathy O'Brien is a nutcase. She names a lot of names in her book Trance Formation of America. Not all of them are politicians. You would think her book wouldn't have been constantly in print since 1996 if she were committing libel. Look at the many reviews of the book on Amazon. The vast majority of them are favorable. It cannot be said that Ford's and many other people's reputations were unhurt by this book. If the book was libellous someone would have sued.

I don't understand why Ford did not want some of the interviews he gave made public until after his death. There is nothing here that was so explosive or controversial that he would have to live with regrets if his sentiments were made public.

The problem with what you are saying is that such respect comes at the expense of the truth. I don't see his presidency as a complete failure. Now the one before it was not a complete failure either, but Nixon like any human being was corrupt and unfortunately he was too full of pride to do the right thing. Actually, Nixon believed that he was doing the right thing in his handling of the cover-up. We were on the verge of ending US involvement in Vietnam, we were also on the verge of forging new relationships with China, and we were still facing down the USSR.

Watergate was a gnat in his ear, and he simply wanted to shoo it away.

Nixon could not have served three terms; the U.S. Constitution prohibits it. Had Ford not become the accidental President, he would never have become POTUS at all. It was an office he never aspired to.

Ford wanted to become Speaker of The House; he was a first class deal broker, but at that time, he knew that the political balance was not going to favor him. Had he not become VP, he would have retired from Congress at the completion of his Congressional term.
